12th League Goal Awarded

[edit]

The FA dubious goals panel recently awarded a goal previously credited as a Norwich City own goal by Sebastien Bassong to Olivier Giroud. This takes his total league tally up to 12 goals so far.

Personal life

[edit]

My apologies for my broken english
Olivier_Giroud#Personal_life is very clean: perfect husband, perfect christian. The reality is: OG is a normal human male able to cheat on his wife. Among a lot, here are 2 articles, in french mainstream (no tabloid) newspapers: Les excuses publiques d'Olivier Giroud à sa femme et Arsenal in le Parisien and Olivier Giroud s'excuse après la révélation de sa liaison extra-conjugale par un tabloïd in Sud-Ouest (newspaper). I don't know what to do with that, but I feel uncomfortable with the current content of Olivier_Giroud#Personal_life, that now smells falsehood and/or sounds a bit like an advertisement. Alvar 09:47, 18 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

If you think the current version of the article is inadequate, WP:SOFIXIT. However, this isn't just a matter of reliable sources, it's a matter of what belongs in Wikipedia. Wikipedia biographies are not concerned with the details of footballers' sex lives (or anyone else's) except when they become especially notable. Robofish (talk) 23:35, 21 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I just expressed my feelings, I don't know what is a detail biowikipediable for a footballer; the mention of the christian tattoo? Have a look here; though France Football is far to be a tabloid and rarely writes about private life; I think FF is the leading publication in football (in France). I won't nevertheless do anything in the article, my english is too bad and I, personnaly, am far from sure that this biography requires this level/type of details; but when I see journals like FF and others writing about these details I feel sceptical. Alvar 08:10, 22 February 2014 (UTC) I like details, cf Talk:Annot derailment ;D Ah, I forgot: the french newspapers write now about the fact that, after his apologies, OG denies adultery.[reply]

Doesn't need to be there. The whole situation is wishy-washy and an accurate series of events is too hard to find. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2.31.240.33 (talk) 15:36, 22 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Lead

[edit]

@Fijipeace: has reworded the opening sentence of the lead to include Giroud's modelling. However, I would argue this is not suitable content for the opening sentence, as this is not the subject's claim to notability. I refer to WP:BEGIN, and I believe the following statements from this support my position: "For topics notable for only one reason, this reason should usually be given in the first sentence" and "Try to not overload the first sentence by describing everything notable about the subject". Thanks, Mattythewhite (talk) 17:55, 20 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Mattythewhitee: In 2013 Giroud stripped naked for Dieux du Stade, a French charity calendar featuring naked sportsmen sold for charity, stripping naked is something a person like Pamela Anderson does for an organization like PETA, and it makes the shoot notable due to that. Just google the word giroud annd press images, google automatically creates suggestions such as hairstyle, body and abs.

Quoted wages

[edit]

"On 30 September 2014, his 28th birthday, Giroud signed a new contract at Arsenal, keeping him at the club until 2018 and increasing his weekly salary to £80,000.[126]"

That figure is a) unsourced from any reliable source, you need a statement from either club or player, and b) obviously nonsense, given that Arsenal spent £192m on wages that season - it obviously doesn't add up if one of the higher-paid players in the squad was on just £80k a week. Also, nitpicking, a salary is monthly, a wage is weekly. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.34.153.108 (talk) 01:26, 21 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, the source was an article by The Independent, a newspaper I'd rate as reliable. However, somehow the link broke and I haven't been able to find the article so I'll replace the reference with an article from the The Telegraph which I'd also consider reputable enough. I'll also change "salary" to "wage". Thanks. Robby.is.on (talk) 11:06, 21 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Preston North End

[edit]

In the section about the 2016/17 season, Preston North End are incorrectly described as a League Two club, when they are in fact a Championship club and have been since 2015. Here is a match report of the game referenced in the article - in this report, PNE are referred to as a Championship club multiple times throughout.

Hi, I would like to add some of the nicknames of Olivier Giroud. In the French National Team, his nickname is "Chaussette" (sock) or also "La Gige" (no translation, just a loving abbreviation). In intro, change: "110 caps" to "115 caps" "his country's second-highest all-time goalscorer" to "his country's highest all-time goalscorer (tied with Thierry Henry)"

"Often considered one of the most underrated..."

[edit]

Isn't this statement contradictory? It is almost contradictory in terms. If you are often considered 'underrated', you are not 'underrated'. It is probably more of a journalistic trope, which should not be taken at face value. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pugliese23 (talkcontribs) 20:42, 10 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
