The "elephas maximus maximus" should actually have brackets on either sides of it, but I cannot figure out how to do that while still having it be an internal link. If anyone knows how, please do so. Turnstep

Done. Not sure if my use of "nowiki" tags was appropriate, but it works. Isoxyl 20:59, 26 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Looks good, thank you. Turnstep 21:22, 26 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I have a picture that is copyrighted. Awaiting clearance before I add it... this whole process is better explained by it.

Problem cleared.

removed mGen

[edit]
removed mGen - It is not related to fasta.

pronunciation

[edit]

The page says: FASTA is pronounced "FAST-Aye"

That leads to the question of "how do I pronounce Aye"?

It is most often pronounced like 'eye' as in the naval expression Aye-Aye but could I suppose sound like the capital letter A! Neither of which are how fasta is pronounced around here.—Preceding unsigned comment added by 131.111.85.79 (talkcontribs) 21:30, 1 November 2006

Its probably pronounced as "A", because its the sucessor to "FAST-P" and "FAST-N" --hydkat 11:31, 4 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Our researchers say either FAST-A (long A) or FASTA (rhymes with shasta, for anyone who remembers) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 137.110.118.175 (talk) 00:25, 10 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

When I first learned it, it was FAST(long A), but at that time FASTP and FASTN were still around, and BLAST was still in development. The history might have been forgotten by now. Gah4 (talk) 21:53, 18 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Confusion with FASTA file format

[edit]

If no one objects, I'm going to put one of those "You may be looking for.." at the top for people who were looking for the FASTA file format. I've ended up here multiple times looking for the file format, and only figured out that there's a separate article after reading a good deal of this one.

And I'd bet a great deal that most people who end up here were looking for the file format. After years in different classes and research labs, I've seen that everyone knows about the file format and they all refer to it as "FASTA" or "FASTA format." And I've never heard anyone mention the software package. In conclusion, I think we need a notice and also very interesting to learn about the history of the format!

Here's what I'll put up if there are no objections:

FASTP and FASTN

[edit]

The article mentions FASTP, and then transitions to FASTA, but FASTA was combining FASTP and FASTN into one program. When was FASTN, and can this be included in the article? Gah4 (talk) 23:37, 17 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

TREE2FASTA comment

[edit]

Dear editor, the recent addition of TREE2FASTA to the 'The Process' section is not appropriate as it does not relate to the FASTA program. Please see above section "Confusion with FASTA file format". TREE2FASTA does not rely on the FASTA program but the FASTA format. It is a perl script utility to rapidly sort FASTA-formatted sequence data from exploratory trees. TREE2FASTA allows users to rapidly choose sequences of interest among a pool of initial sequences via coloring/annotating on a tree.

TREE2FASTA could be added to the FASTA format wikipedia page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FASTA_format In this page, a new section called "Sorting FASTA files" could be created to describe the different possible ways/program of sorting sequences of interest can be done. TREE2FASTA represents a tool to do so among other possible programs, but TREE2FASTA represents an improvement by allowing sorting via visualisation on a tree, while other programs only work via input lists of sequence headers.

Please advise how one can help to frame an appropriate paragraph if of interest to create such section in the FASTA format wikipedia page

Please specify:

  1. Where should the recent addition of tree2fasta in the Process section be moved to.
  2. If Sorting section is created, what should it say, how should it say it, and who will reference it.
  3. In what way would sorting be done by coloring sequence on the tree or through annotating them, and why would sorting in this manner be an improvement.

Please advise.   SPINTENDO          14:32, 1 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

However it should be done, it should be discussed on that page. Gah4 (talk) 14:58, 2 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
