Titanic tragedy

[edit]

It is said that this song has been played by the band on the titanic while the ship sunk. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 149.225.0.158 (talkcontribs) .

If possible, make the second external link go to the actual sound flie, not the Gallery page on the ACCHOS website. I don't know how to do it myself, but I hope someone else does so they can fix the link.24.161.53.152 (talk) 21:56, 19 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

夕陽西沉, 求主與我同居;
黑暗漸深, 求主與我同居;
歡娛好景, 轉瞬都成過去;
淚不辛酸, 痛也無足慮;
照徹昏幽, 指我直上天衢;

Reste avec nous, Seigneur, le jour décline,
La nuit s’approche et nous menace tous;
En toi notre âme a trouvé son époux;
A ta lumière elle se rent renaître:
Reste avec nous, Seigneur, reste avec nous!
Les vains bonheurs de ce monde infidèle
N’enfantent rien que regrets ou dégoûts;
Satan vainqueur nous tiendra sous ses coups;

die Lust verglimmt, der Erdenruhm verbleicht;
Halt mir dein Kreuz vor, wenn mein Auge bricht;

Habita em mim na dura tentação;
Senhor habita em mim na escuridão.
Quando os amigos de mim fugir,
Sozinho estou, Senhor vem me acudir.
Nós somos pó, mas estamos aqui;
Com alegria pra louvar a Ti;
Tudo não passa de ostentação;
Jesus não muda Sua criação.
Oh Senhor Jesus vem por mim olhar;
Eu era jovem; Tu por mim sorria;
Eu não receio nem o malfeitor;
Não tenho medo do perigo ou dor.
Jesus a morte Ele venceu, sim!
Jesus triunfou e habita em mim!
Senhor me ajude a carregar a cruz;
Brilha na sombra e mostre-me Sua Luz.
O amanhã em breve terá fim;
Vida ou morte Ele habita em mim!

O Dio d’amor, deh, ascolta il mio pregar:
Rendimi intento tutto al Tuo timor;
Per l’evangel desiro in Te abbondar
Di carità, di fé, di speme ognor.
O Dio d’amor, deh, ascolta il mio pregar:
La Tua parola scrivi nel mio cuor;
Altro non v’è che possa consolar;
Per essa sola sento in Te vigor.
O Dio d’amor, deh, ascolta il mio pregar:
Fammi secondo tutto il Tuo voler:
Con tutto il cuor, deh, fammi camminar
Ripieno di virtù nei Tuoi sentier.
O Dio d’amor, deh, ascolta il mio pregar:
Proseguirò conoscer Ti vieppiù…
D’ogni Tuo ben deh, fammi giubilar:
Nel nome Te lo chiedo di Gesù.

Maradj velem, mert mindjárt este van,
Nő a sötét, ó el ne hagyj, Uram:
Nincs senkim és a vigaszt nem lelem,
Gyámoltalannal, ó maradj velem.
Kis életem fut s hervadásba hull,
Bú lesz a vígság, fényesség fakul,
Csak változást és romlást lát a szem;
Változhatatlan, ó maradj velem.
Minden múló perc Hozzád visz közel,
Kegyelmed űzi kisértőmet el,
Nincs más vezérem, nincs más Mesterem,
Fényben, borúban, ó maradj velem.
Ellenség ellen áldásod fedez,
A könny nem sós, a kór is könnyű lesz,
Sír, halál-fúlánk, hol a győzelem?
Győztes leszek, csak légy, Uram, velem.
Húnyó szemembe vésd keresztedet,
Ködöt foszlatva láttasd szent eged.
Föld árnya fut, menny fénye megjelen:
Halálban is Te légy, Uram, velem.

Torbay

[edit]

The HFL article says he wrote it watching the sun set in Torbay. From my local knowledge, I know the song was written in Brixham, but I also know the sun wouldn't set over Torbay as it faces east. I'm not completely knowledgeable about the exact facts of its writing, but surely the two articles should match...

If the information is to be present in both articles, it should match, as you suggest. So there are two points:
  1. We could do with a decent, cited, verifiable source of that information. From your local knowledge, and presumably with access to local libraries, could you dig out the information?
  2. Perhaps the information should be in just one article, with the other cross-referencing to it. (I would suggest the hymn article rather than the author article.)

Use of Abide with me at Royal weddings

[edit]

A lot of websites say this hymn was sung at the wedding of George VI and that of his daughter Elizabeth. It just isn't true. There are on the net details of the services and some videos. It was Praise my soul, written by the same author as Abide with me that was common to these weddings. 92.11.216.245 (talk) 23:56, 30 April 2011 (UTC) Stephen Mitchell 1st May 2011[reply]

Here is the reference on the official Westminster Abbey website http://www.westminster-abbey.org/our-history/royals/weddings/hm-queen-elizabeth-ii--and--hrh-the-duke-of-edinburgh —Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.11.216.245 (talk) 15:17, 1 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for finding that. It is useful for us deciding what to do. Given that your references seems to confirm that this hymn played no part at all in the service, I suggest that we simply omit all reference to it. So I'll edit it out. Best wishes. King George ?

[edit]

I thought that Abide with me was the favourite of George VI, not of George V. 94.30.84.71 (talk) 20:52, 20 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Titanic connection

[edit]

Whilst three different settings of Nearer My God to Thee and the popular dance number Autumn Dream are popular favourites for the last tune played on the RMS Titanic, I think Abide with Me (presumably sung to Eventide) is not a significant contender and the reference should be removed. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 27.96.217.46 (talk) 03:59, 22 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

"Popular use" section

[edit]

The trivia template at the top of the "Popular use" section has been in place for about eighteen months. This section is overloaded with non-encyclopaedic trivia ("it was once used in an episode of a soap opera", etc.) and overwhelms the article. I propose massively reducing it, although preserving a few items which are both encyclopaedic are properly sourced. Unless there is any discussion here to the contrary, I propose doing this about a week from now. Feline Hymnic (talk) 10:50, 16 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

No objection from me. A year and a half is plenty of time for anyone who cared to have fixed it. TJRC (talk) 17:23, 16 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Done. Feline Hymnic (talk) 15:03, 23 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The "In popular music" section is useful info and should be included again for people to come to know that this hymn was also made into popular songs recorded by modern day artists and musicians across different genres, with some having chart hits with it. References should also be added. Hiddenstranger (talk) 04:46, 19 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Lyte's preferred given name

[edit]

Sources such as this: [1] call him Henry. This article calls him Francis. Which is right?---Ehrenkater (talk) 18:02, 16 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

It's really moot. We should use his full name Henry Francis Lyte in the lede and first occurrence in the body; but thereafter, per WP:SURNAME, neither "Henry" nor "Francis" should be used. TJRC (talk) 23:06, 16 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
