Kolej Tuanku Ja'afar (KTJ) is a premier international school located in Mantin, Seremban District, Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia, catering to students aged 3 to 19 years. Founded in 1989 by members of the Negeri Sembilan Royal Family, KTJ was established with the vision of integrating the strengths of a British-style boarding education with the vibrancy of Malaysian culture.

History

[edit]

KTJ was established with a focus on holistic education that combines academic achievement with character development. Initial funding came from 17 Malaysian companies that supported the school's vision, leading to the construction of its facilities. The school welcomed its first cohort of over 100 students in January 1991, and since then, it has expanded its international student body, currently representing over 24 countries.[8]

Educational Approach

[edit]

KTJ's educational framework is guided by principles that reflect its commitment to holistic education, global citizenship, sustainability, and diversity. The school is accredited by the Council of International Schools (CIS), ensuring compliance with established educational standards.

Vision and Mission

[edit]
  • Vision: To be the preferred school in Southeast Asia, empowering students to become responsible leaders within a global community.
  • Mission: To provide a holistic British-style education in a Malaysian context, nurturing a diverse learning community.

Values

[edit]

The school emphasizes values of integrity, empathy, and mutual respect in its educational approach.

Academic Programs

[edit]

Secondary Education

[edit]

KTJ Secondary encompasses Forms 1 to 5 and the Sixth Form. The curriculum is based on the English National Curriculum, with bespoke syllabi for Forms 1 to 3 and IGCSE preparation for Forms 4 and 5. The Sixth Form focuses on A Levels and preparation for higher education.

Support services are available for students, including language assistance and counseling, addressing their academic and emotional needs.

Primary Education

[edit]

KTJ Primary serves children from Early Years to Primary Years 1 to 6. The curriculum combines the International Early Years Curriculum (IEYC) for Early Years with the English National Curriculum and International Primary Curriculum (IPC) for Key Stages 1 and 2.

Boarding Facilities

[edit]

KTJ offers boarding facilities that promote independence and life skills. The school has seven senior boarding houses and one junior house, providing communal areas for study and recreation. Boarding staff, including Houseparents, assist students in their academic and personal development.

Achievements

[edit]

KTJ has recorded notable academic achievements, with a significant percentage of A Level entries graded A* and A*-B. Recent IGCSE results indicate that half of the students received A*-B grades in seven or more subjects. KTJ graduates have gained admission to various universities worldwide, including many top-ranking institutions.[9]

Governance

[edit]

KTJ operates as a not-for-profit organization governed by a Board of Trustees responsible for the school’s strategic direction and financial management. The school’s finances undergo annual audits by an external firm to ensure accountability.[10]

Vision 2030

[edit]

The school has initiated Vision 2030, a strategic plan designed to enhance KTJ’s status as a leading educational institution in Southeast Asia. This plan outlines specific goals for community engagement and educational excellence.[11]
