From Proto-Vietic *b-ruːʔ (“forest, mountain”), from Proto-Mon-Khmer *bruuʔ. Cognate with Muong Bi khũ (“stone, rock; mountain”), Tho [Cuoi Cham] pʰraw³ ("mountain, forest") and Chut [Rục] bruː³ ("forest").
