From Proto-Semai *kənyɛɛᵍŋ, from Proto-Aslian [Term?], from Proto-Mon-Khmer *sn₁iəŋ (wing) by dissimilation. Cognate with Semang sinyeng, Mon သၞေၚ် (hneaŋ), Khasi thàp-niang.
