editStokes suggests possible derivations from Proto-Indo-European *tenk (“to be suitable”) (similar to Proto-Germanic *þinhaną (“to thrive”)) and *teḱ- (“to beget, sire, be fruitful”) (similar to Ancient Greek τίκτω (tíktō)).[1]
