Etymology
editPotentially attested as barle in 1237, attested with certainty as barle in 1260. Compound of a toponym derived from Middle Dutch baer (“barren, infertile”) and lo (“light forest”) suffixed with Nassau. The element Nassau was added to distinguish the settlement from Baarle-Hertog. Compare Baal, Baarlo, Bahr, Barlo and Hoog-Baarlo.
