ArbCom elections 2006 summary table
editHi there. I've been adding notes to the table here, and I thought it best to ask you if the links I've provided in the notes section for your entry are sufficient (one to explain the quote, and one to link to your explanation on your questions page). The table is not that visible yet, I don't think, but I hope it will be more widely available over the coming month. Carcharoth 15:22, 26 November 2006 (UTC)
ArbCom elections questions
editI've added some new questions for you here. Carcharoth 17:05, 26 November 2006 (UTC)
ArbCom questions
editHi. I'm Ral315, editor of the Wikipedia Signpost. We're doing a series on ArbCom candidates, and your response is requested.
- What positions do you hold (adminship, mediation, etc.)?
- Why are you running for the Arbitration Committee?
- Have you been involved in any arbitration cases? In what capacity?
Please respond on my talk page. We'll probably go to press late Monday or early Tuesday (UTC), but late responses will be added as they're submitted. Thanks, Ral315 (talk) 02:00, 27 November 2006 (UTC)
This is an IP address registered to the US House of Representatives. I've blocked it for 24 hours (anon-only) following an WP:AIV report about it blanking the entire controversy section out of the Steve Buyer article. Instructions on the talk page suggested I should mention it to the Communications committee, but I'm not sure how to contact the committee as a whole, so I decided to just contact you, since I've seen you active relatively recently, and you're on the committee. Heads up
editHi UC. Since I mention you and Geogre in my candidate statement, I have been been drawn into discussing the both of you: Question(s) from jd2718, Questions from AnonEMouse. Thought you might want to know. Regards, Paul August ☎ 20:13, 30 November 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for the warning. I don't see much in the discussion to which I might object. You are correct, by the way, that by articulating a platform I have left myself open to specific criticisms from those who would disagree with it. On the other hand, I think that the community should know what they're getting if they choose to support me -- unlike some others I have drawn some conclusions about the process. Perhaps that has come of being involved. The Uninvited Co., Inc. 20:30, 30 November 2006 (UTC)
- You're welcome. So I take it you didn't mind my comparing you and Geogre with three Greek godesses? Paul August ☎ 22:04, 30 November 2006 (UTC)
Portfolio for ArbCom
editOn Wikipedia:Arbitration Committee Elections December 2006/Summary table, I added a column "Examples" with links that exhibit a candidate's arbitration skills. My motivation is that as a voter, I don't want to just rely on a candidate's words, but also see their actions. Moreover, I believe a portfolio of "model cases" to remember in difficult situations can be useful for each candidate, as well.
All I could find on your questions page was that you cited involvement in WP: OTRS, but I wasn't able to find any specific contribution. Would you like to add one yourself to the table? — Sebastian (talk) 23:26, 3 December 2006 (UTC) (Please reply on this page.)
- Unfortunately, the OTRS system isn't on the wiki. One of the problems we have recruiting people to work on it is that the extent and quality of their contributions are necessarily invisible to the community, since OTRS replies are supposed to be confidential. The Uninvited Co., Inc. 18:13, 4 December 2006 (UTC)
- Thank you for your explanation. That makes sense. (If we had more time I'd ask you if you could provide references, but I haven't read the questions page looking for that.) — Sebastian (talk) 21:12, 4 December 2006 (UTC)
OTRS
editHello, could you please look at User_talk:Mindspillage at all the OTRS headings? She wrote she's busy with her exams now. Thank you. ~~helix84 19:40, 4 December 2006 (UTC)

Editing tips and help
editThank you for your editing work on my first-ever wiki page, River Bend Nature Center. I thought I'd throw it up there and practice with it to get the wiki system down - didn't think anyone would even notice it this soon (1st big lesson of the day). Your comments are noted and helpful. Thanks. Blackmer 20:02, 4 December 2006 (UTC)

Arbcom voting
editI appreciate your candor and response regarding my vote. I have reviewed the matter and regret to inform you that, at this time, I will continue to oppose your candidacy. In short, your response to the question regarding SPOV seems to me to be less well-considered than other candidates whom I have supported. In particular, the comment "Science can explain a great deal, but it cannot explain everything." seems to me to be out-of-place as something of a straw man and altogether too argumentative with regards to this delicate subject. Controversies around science, to me, center primarily on the reliability of sources, the verifiability of research, and an approach that makes it clear that undue weight of fringe subjects and original research is a major concern considering the open nature of the wiki. If you wish to talk more about this, I'm more than willing to discuss. You can also check out arbcom cases I've been a party to in the last few months.
Best,
OTRS access.
editPlease check out User:Martinp23 who volunteered. I gave him an intro at #wikimedia-otrs last night, and I think he'll be a big help. If you give him access I'll keep an eye on his tickets for a while with suggestions if needed. -- Jeandré, 2006-12-19t18:14z

- Hi - I've emailed you a reply. Martinp23 22:03, 21 December 2006 (UTC)
User JimA is requesting an unblock. I looked through his contributions and while he has been insterting the same unsourced material over and over, I see nothing on his talk page explaining that this is not okay. I also see several days between edits.
On first glance I would say that a warning, or a short block would be in order. Is there something I have missed that would justify an indef block? HighInBC (Need help? Ask me) 17:04, 21 December 2006 (UTC)
- I've been corresponding with him via email. He has been adding unsourced material, some of it out of context, related to a court case involving email privacy. His motives appear to have more to do with demonizing the individuals involved than with creating a greater understanding of privacy issues overall. The material resulted in an OTRS complaint from the affected college. I blocked JimA after he re-added the material twice without discussion. He appears to have no other editing interests at Wikipedia. I have offered via email to unblock him if he agrees to follow our sourcing policy and discuss controversial changes before making. He has declined to make such an agreement, and so I have left him blocked. The Uninvited Co., Inc. 18:05, 21 December 2006 (UTC)
I see, I will repeat that offer on his talk page, for transparencies sake, and failing his agreement to those reasonable terms I will leave him blocked. Thanks for the fast response. HighInBC (Need help? Ask me) 18:06, 21 December 2006 (UTC)
