Craig Perry
I am a social historian of the medieval Middle East. At Emory University, I am an assistant professor with a joint appointment in the Department of Middle Eastern and South Asian Studies and the Tam Institute for Jewish Studies. I also serve on the faculty of the graduate program in Islamic Civilizations Studies.
My current book project is a history of medieval domestic slavery and the slave trade based on documents from the Geniza and other Arabic sources. I am also co-editor of volume 2 of The Cambridge World History of Slavery on the medieval period.

manumission and conversion in twelfth- and thirteenth-century Egypt.
Perry shows how, given the prevalence of slave women in the Jewish households
of urbanized centers, manumission and conversion to Judaism served
as a tool for maintaining social order and familial hierarchy. Failed attempts
to effectively outlaw sexual relations between master and slave spurred the
rabbinical establishment to regulate this practice by encouraging Jewish men
to manumit, convert, and ultimately marry their former slaves/concubines
