The Kingdom of Hungary was neither an exception to this field. There are several examples of clerics, bishops and abbots who led different negotiations or settled marriages for the ruling dynasty. This paper discusses the diplomatic services of two Hungarian bishops, John and Jacob of Nyitra who played an important role in the second decade of the 13th century. John took part in the settlement of the Bohemian Investiture Controversy, while Jacob represented the Hungarian king at the peace treaty of Graz in 1225 and visited the Bohemian Kingdom a few years later, probably to negotiate about the new conflict between Emperor Frederick II of the Holy Roman Empire and Pope Gregory IX.

In the next years, almost every neighbouring ruler, including Pope Innocent IV and Emperor Frederick II, tried to take possession of the duchies or some parts of them. After the death of Emperor Frederick II and Hermann of Baden (1250) who had held the Duchy of Austria for a few years, the conflict became a Bohemian–Hungarian rivalry, which came to a provisory end only in 1254 with the Peace of Buda. This period is one of the most well-known and researched eras in the history of Bohemian–Austrian– Hungarian relations, but there are still unclear details and open questions which I try to address in this paper. The main focus is directed on the military campaigns of King Béla IV of Hungary in 1250, 1252, and 1253. Beside this, I attempt to reveal the objectives of the Hungarian king behind his political moves and to reconstruct the decisions which defined the history of the region in these years. To achieve these goals, I analyse the contemporary and later narrative sources such as the charters issued by rulers and clerics who played an important role in this matter.
