This article discusses the ethno-political and immaterial cultural representations of Russia’s and Georgia’s Muslim minorities as reflected in their anthroponyms, toponyms, flags and coats of arms. It is obvious that Such representations reflect cultural expressions, as they may depict ethnic or religious symbols. Both Russia’s and Georgia’s attitudes towards Islamic cultural expressions are rather liberal. Symbols and names tell a lot about a people’s cultural freedom and orientation. However, it appears from research that religious practice and freedom do not necessarily correlate perfectly with representation of symbols. In accordance with the legacy of the Soviet nationalities policy, by which certain ethnic groups were afforded privileges in an autonomous region, the current representations of immaterial culture and ethno-political culture seem to have a territorial rationale.

in English This article in Russian presents and analyses the Russian Presidential elections of March 2018. The analysis particularly focuses on the electorate and reelection of President Vladimir Putin and the reasons behind this continuing choice and support. The article divides this electorate into three groups, each of which are presented through the lens of ethnogeopolitics. Each of the defined groups has its own set of justifications of their choice; however, the article finds a common denominator that unites all three groups as one that votes and keeps voting for Putin.

The way a people narrates major historical events is intimately related to the way it perceives its own identity. Emic coherence is coherence and cohesion in the self-description of a people’s identity, its presentation to the outside world. Fereydani Georgians are only a segment of the larger Georgian population of Iran. This chapter deals with the mechanisms by which Fereydani Georgians reaffirm their Shi’ite identity in harmony with the wider and general Iranian Georgians’ role in Iranian history. Furthermore, this chapter will discuss a few alternative and non-hegemonic narratives and representations of Fereydani Georgian identity and history.

Papers from this broad spectrum of topics are represented in the volume. The languages of the conference were English and Russian, and the volume there-fore includes papers in both these languages. The organizing of this international conference and the presence of a large number of colleagues from Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan and North Caucasus would not have been possible without the generous support from the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida).

Terrorist attacks in the North Caucasus and the eruption of many other ethnic conflicts in the post-Soviet space cause the fear that the old Ossetian-Ingush confrontation may also re-emerge. Ossetians are the only indigenous Christian ethnic group in the predominantly Sunni Muslim North Caucasus. They have fought a war with the Ingush over the Prigorodnyj district, which was part of the Chechen-Ingush Autonomous Republic inhabited mainly by the Ingush before they were deported by Stalin in the early 1940s. After their return, the punished Muslim Ingush have tried in vain to regain their territory, which has ultimately resulted in a bloody war in the early 1990s. Unlike the other wars in the former Soviet republics, this was not a vertical conflict. The present paper tries to analyse the historical background and roots of the antagonism between the two neighbouring North Caucasian peoples.
