Naturalization criteria play an important role in who can be accepted as a member of a national polity. In the political and social sciences often a distinction is drawn between the right of blood-jus sanguinis-and the right of soil-jus soli-as guiding principles for naturalization. In this paper, we analyse discourses about Europe in Greek debates about immigration and citizenship and highlight the complexities of ‘Europeanness’ as a symbolic resource for argumentation in these debates. Our data consist of lay discourses from two rounds of online public deliberation (2009/2010 and 2015) about a controversial new citizenship law in Greece. Our analysis shows that Europe is an ambivalent category. On the one hand, Europe symbolises progress, but, on the other hand, it is also constructed in terms of decline and ‘contamination’ by multiculturalism. Further, our analysis shows that the category of Europe can be mobilised in contradictory ways, in order to support arguments for and against citizenship rights for migrants. The paper concludes with a discussion of the ways in which constructions of Europe are implicated in processes of othering and inclusion in the context of current immigration debates.

During the last two decades Greece has become a multicultural society due to the influx of immigrants mainly from the Balkans and East Europe. At the same time Greece became fully integrated to the European Community. Within this context the relation of Greek national identity to Europe and to the immigrant ‘*ther’ becomes a topic of everyday conversations and a focal point of social scientific research. This study following a discourse analytic perspective (Edwards, 1997; Edwards and Potter, 1992; Potter, 1996; Potter and Wetherell, 1987) attempts to explore the way Greek people construct Greek national identity in relation to immigration and European integration within an interview context. It is argued that participants strategically managed stereotypes about immigrants in order to avoid accusations of prejudice, while stereotypes about the Europeans seemed to be informed by the ambivalent positioning of Greece between East and West (Bozatzis, 1998; Herzfeld, 1987).

The present article attempts to examine the rhetorical tools speakers used in order to present themselves as patriots disavowing at the same time any possible accusations that they are nationalists. Speakers participated in a study on nationalism. Fifty-seven people formal members of the six biggest political parties in Greece at the time of the study were interviewed. Open-ended interviewes were used to collect data on the topic of the Macedonina issue. Following transcription interviewes were analysed using discourse analytic techniques (Edwards, 1997; Potter & Wetherell, 1987; Potter, 1996). It was found that on many occasions people would use particular / national and international themes interchangeably so as to present themselves as patriots. In other words participants frequently argued that they supported Greece in the crisis, not because it was their country, but because of the violation of some internationlly accepted principles.

The study of the cultural adaptation of immigrants is an integral piece of socio-psychological research due to the movement of populations especially in the Western world. Berry’s model constitutes a basic tool in this attempt, focusing on the acculturation attitudes/ strategies that cultural groups that get in contact follow. In recent years emphasis is also placed on the acculturation strategies that the majority group of the host country supports, since it is argued that they play a crucial role in the attitudes/ strategies that the immigrants will follow in the specific country. Abstract: Research on social class is scant within social psychology, although recent economic developments have turned many researchers’ gaze on various research fields relating to class. An important aspect of social class research has been intersectionality, namely the relation of social class to other identities, such as gender and ethnicity. It is often argued that social agents develop an understanding of social class that is inseparable of issues of gender and ethnicity. Following a discursive perspective this article aims to demonstrate the situated use of notions that are related to social class in educators’ discourse on immigrant children’s presence in the Greek school. In this paper we examine how immigrants in Greece construct naturalization criteria in talk and how these may relate to the inclusion or exclusion of immigrants. Participants were 25 immigrants who participated in an interview on the current situation in Greece and the new naturalization law. Analyzing the interviews using Rhetorical Psychology, Ideological Dilemmas and Discursive Psychology we argue that participants by ridiculing citizenship criteria they legitimated their own presence within Greece. At the same time, they seemed to exclude other immigrant groups using discourses of legality/illegality. A possible reason for this dilemma, we maintain, is the diverse ideological background of the notion of citizenship, which allows its mobilization towards different ends.

Μοντέρνος Ρατσισμός και στάσεις για τη Διαπολιτισμική Εκπαίδευση: μια συγχρονική έρευνα μεταξύ πρωτοετών και τεταρτοετών φοιτητών του Τμήματος Επιστημών της Εκπαίδευσης στην Προσχολική Ηλικία του ΔΠΘ. Αντώνης Σαπουντζής 11 (ΤΕΕΠΗ ΔΠΘ), Γιώργος Μαυρομμάτης (ΤΕΕΠΗ ΔΠΘ), Τετιάνα Ντομπρίντεν (ΤΕΕΠΗ ΔΠΘ), Αλεξάνδρα Καρούσου (ΤΕΕΠΗ ΔΠΘ). Περίληψη Το άρθρο αυτό εξετάζει εαν η φοίτηση σε ένα τμήμα που η διδασκαλία της διαπολιτισμικής εκπαίδευσης έχει κεντρικό ρόλο μπορεί να επηρεάσει τα επίπεδα Μοντέρνου και Κλασσικού Ρατσισμού των φοιτητών. Συγκεκριμένα παρουσιάζει τα ευρήματα μιας συγχρονικής έρευνας που επιχειρεί να εξετάσει τις στάσεις πρωτοετών και τεταρτοετών φοιτητών του Τμήματος Επιστημών της Εκπαίδευσης στην Προσχολική Ηλικία του Δημοκριτείου Πανεπιστημίου Θράκης για τη Διαπολιτισμική εκπαίδευση, και παράλληλα να μετρήσει τα επίπεδα Μοντέρνου και Παραδοσιακού Ρατσισμού. Βασική μας υπόθεση είναι ότι η φοίτηση στο τμήμα επηρεάζει τα επίπεδα τόσο του Μοντέρνου και Παραδοσιακού ρατσισμού όσο και τις στάσεις απέναντι στη Διαπολιτισμική Εκπαίδευση. Στην έρευνα συμμετείχαν 139 φοιτητές που συμπλήρωσαν ένα ερωτηματολόγιο αυτοαναφοράς σχετικά με το θέμα της έρευνας. Τα αποτελέσματα έδειξαν ότι αν και υπήρχε σημαντική διαφορά στάσεων ανάμεσα στο πρώτο και τέταρτο έτος αναφορικά με τις στάσεις απέναντι στη Διαπολιτισμική εκπαίδευση, δεν υπήρχε διαφορά στις βαθμολογίες στις κλίμακες Παραδοσιακού και Μοντέρνου ρατσισμού. Υποστηρίζεται ότι μια πιθανή εξήγηση αυτού του φαινομενικά παράδοξου ευρήματος μπορεί να είναι το γεγονός ότι το πανεπιστήμιο δεν αποτελεί τη μόνη πηγή διαμόρφωσης των απόψεων των φοιτητών. Επίσης πιθανή εξήγηση αποτελεί το γεγονός ότι οι θεωρείες Μοντέρνου Ρατσισμού αναπτύχθηκαν σε ένα διαφορετικό κοινωνικό πλαίσιο από το ελληνικό, με την αξία του εργατικού προτεσταντικού ήθους να θεωρείται κεντρική στη διαμόρφωση των στάσεων Μοντερνου Ρατσιμού, η οποία όμως δε φαίνεται να είναι συναφής στο ελληνικό κοινωνικό πλαίσιο.

The goal of the present article was twofold: to analyze the contributions of qualitative methodologies and discursive psychology in the field of bullying studies, as well as to develop an argument to analyze rhetorical practices on bullying/cyberbullying, following the approach of Critical Discursive Social Psychology. In the Greek context there is a body of institutional interventions, as well as non-official interventions endorsed by the civil society. The latter are guided by the framework of inclusion, democratic citizenship and Community Psychology, shedding particular emphasis on integrating social groups. By analyzing these interventions, dilemmas related to humanism or recognizing the engaged members as political subjects could be evident. In the present article, it is analyzed how educators talk about bullying and school violence, by invoking repertoires that may disempower the 'victim'/child, through humanistic discourse, but on the other hand, may criticize the use of disempowering practices of bystanding. In the main analysis of the present article, it seems that the constructions reflecting the nonpotentiality of critical agency of the victim intersect with repertoires reflecting democracy and autonomy, reflecting dilemmas of liberalism. As it is discussed, the contribution of Critical Discursive Social Psychology concerns the potential to trace flexible ways in which social agents create or disempower the spaces of critical agency in the school community, without ignoring the ideological limitations in lay talk.

The paper discusses how a primary education teacher who identified himself as gay, enacts, resists and reproduces dominant understandings of gender and sexuality in terms of his own identity and practice in Greece, which is a very conservative and, sometimes, hostile country towards those who do not conform to heteronormativity. The discussion is based on a social constructionist analysis of a semi-structured interview. It provides the readers with interesting stimulating data and can be the starting point of an interesting conversation about the potential struggles that LGTBIQ+ teachers and LGTBIQ+ people in general face in Greece. It is part of a larger research project regarding gender and educational leadership in Greece.

Το περιβάλλον των παιδιών τους προσφέρει πολλές πληροφορίες και γνώσεις σε σχέση με τα φύλα και τα επαγγέλματα, οι οποίες εκφράζονται με διάφορους τρόπους. Η έρευνα που παρουσιάζεται στο παρόν άρθρο περιγράφει τις αντιλήψεις/κατασκευές παιδιών νηπιαγωγείου σε σχέση με το επάγγελμα που θα ήθελαν να ακολουθήσουν αλλά και με τα επαγγέλματα που «αρμόζουν» στο κάθε φύλο. Η έρευνα πραγματοποιήθηκε με τη μέθοδο των ημι-δομημένων συνεντεύξεων που αναλύθηκαν υπό το θεωρητικό πρίσμα της φεμινιστικής κοινωνικής κατασκευής. Τα ευρήματα δείχνουν ότι τα παιδιά βασίζονται κυρίως σε δυιστικές στερεοτυπικές αντιλήψεις για τα φύλα και την επιλογή επαγγέλματος.
