contextual engagement with theology is understood as a gift to the global church in helping us understand our faith more fully. The reader is urged to pay attention not only to contextual theologies, but also to the local context in which the Bible is interpreted, so that in contrast to the emphasis on objectivity in much Western hermeneutics, engagement with the social context becomes an essential part of theologizing. One of the most encouraging aspects of this book is the way each author, who is active in theologizing in their own context, incisively critiques that local theologizing to highlight both the key features that challenge the hegemony of Western theology and the areas in which their own contextual theology is deficient. Many of the authors conclude that theologizing in their context must be taken further to engage more fully with the worldview of their people. This book is an invaluable addition to the growing literature on global theology. It is well suited for use as a textbook for seminary classes on the contextualization and globalization of theology, as it exposes students to a representative range of theologies, sensitive evaluations of the current state of local theology in each context, and provides a framework for thinking about these contextual theologies. Missiologists will be encouraged and stimulated by the fresh call given by the book’s many contributors to see traditional Western theology for what it is—one of many contextual theologies.
