Abstract

This paper presents a systematic literature review to identify the challenges and best practices of distributed VR co-design systems, in order to guide the design of such systems. It was found that VR, due to its intuitive format is useful at co-design review meetings since it allows everyone, not just experts, to provide their inputs, thus resulting in additional practical insights from project stakeholders. It also allows the identification of design deficiencies that were not observable using traditional methods and that were overlooked by the traditional panel of expert reviewers. Our review also indicates that VR should complement, not replace, traditional 2D CAD drawings. Our review, however, shows there is little conclusive evidence about the features and functions that should be included in the design of such systems and that more quantitative studies are needed to support the findings from qualitative studies.
