Perspectives on Architectural Design Research is a collection of short essays, projects and edited transcripts that offers current perspectives on design research in architecture and aligned disciplines. Contributors include international figures Donald L. Bates, Richard Blythe, Nat Chard, Murray Fraser, Dorita Hannah, Jonathan Hill and Vivian Mitsogianni. What emerges from the multiple perspectives is that contemporary design research – transdisciplinary, multi-scalar and concerning place, people, space and time – provides a collective and subtle mechanism that is propositional and transformative. The shared optimism of the contributors is that this propositional mode of research can be of catalytic value for contemporary culture and society.

Critique of theory and practice in architecture is combined here with ideas from kinetic art of the 1960’s. From this background the basic principles of kinetics are defined and are used to generate experimental computer animations. By classifying the animations, a theory of kinetic form called ‘state change’ is developed. This design research provides a unique and timely resource for those interested in the capacity of kinetics to enliven the public face of architecture.
‘heroic genius’ actually marginalises the agency of design research. Laying aside the various arguments surrounding the agency and value of design as research, we have made a simpler observation: students see value in ambitious research questions, but many are insufficiently equipped with the ways, means and tactics to pursue them. To illustrate this, we present examples here that evince some of the issues and review what contemporary resources are available to assist students in undertaking research-‐through-‐design. We then present some student work on design methods and discuss aspirations for what we refer to as a ‘handbook of design research tactics’.
