The longest span girder bridge of India was conceived in 2004 and it took nearly 20 years to cons... more The longest span girder bridge of India was conceived in 2004 and it took nearly 20 years to construct the same. The bridge construction had to be suspended due to encountering of geotechnical surprises halfway through the construction, when the cantilever construction of superstructure was in progress on both the piers. The working season available for construction of foundations which were located on the precipice was merely 3 months, as such the less time consuming drilled shaft foundations were initially conceived on the basis of geotechnical investigation carried out then.
It was only revealed later, during the strengthening of the stratum of one of the pier foundations, that the drilled shaft did not have adequate socket capacity due to very poor sub-strata around it. The project was in abeyance for a long period due to the stalemate caused by the foundation issue. It took 8 years for the project to revive. After the extensive investigation for nearly 8 years, the bridge is salvaged by adopting innovative rehabilitation methodologies. The paper gives a detailed account of rehabilitation of India’s longest span girder bridge during the construction stage.
