In the area between the Bay of Wismar and Gdańsk Bay, populated by Slavs during the Early and High Middle Ages, nine maritime trading centres have been identified so far; their harbours were key interfaces between land and water transport. The research plan envisages a systematic and interdisciplinary investigation of the harbour structures of these early medieval sites from a topographical, economic and social perspective.

Usually our knowledge about the size of the settlement at its foot, its planigraphy, and of course chronology, is too slender to make any conclusions. By employing complex non-destructive research methods (palynological, geochemical, lithological and geomagnetic analysis, as well as 14C and thermoluminescence dating), the article discusses the time of the rise and the abandonment of Skomantai hill-fort and settlements, the hierarchical relations with the hill-fort as an object forming the settlement structure of the neighbouring area, both settlements at the foot of the hill, and the surrounding burial grounds and monuments, all of which make up a micro-region. Regarding the landscape reconstruction glacial channels, silted-up back waters of rivers and former coastlines can be detected by land seismics and dated with the help of corings. Appropriate results were achieved e. g. in Ralswiek on the island of Rügen, near a Roman fort in Kalkar and in Leiruvogur on Iceland. In marine areas high-resolution stratigraphy can be achieved by marine reflection seismics as shown for example in Bonn and Ainos. Especially for magnetics our systems were adjusted to the conditions in the transition zone. Now measurements can be conducted in shallow water, flooded areas (water depth < 10 cm) and in rough terrain to map settlement and harbour structures. Magnetic measurements covering land, flooded areas and shallow water done in Ainos, Turkey, revealed probable harbour constructions. A magnetic sledge allowed measurements in high grass on Iceland. A problem in the transition zone is the high electrical conductivity of soils that anticipates the use of GPR and ERT and its associated depth resolution in near surface regions. A solution of this problem might be seismic surface waves methods that are independent of electrical conductivity.

The investigations yielded new results pertaining to the landscape and settlement history as well as basic patterns for the choice of settlement locations: protected areas in bays and lagoons or along rivers were preferred for the establishment of landing places and ports, while the associated settlement was often located in close proximity in an elevated position. The landing sites and watersides were partially stabilised by wooden installations. Particularly evident was the dependence of the settlements on palaeogeographical processes: sedimentation, changes in water level or multiple fl ood events led to extensive expansion and installation of infrastructural ameliorations within settlements as well as the ports. Due to the excellent preservation of organic materials in all study sites palaeobotanical analyses were conducted. The preservation conditions permitted the collection of a large body of data providing numerous details about the materials used as well as the vegetable based food resources and the environmental conditions. In addition to the role of the palaeogeographical conditions for the establishment of ports, it remains to be clarifi ed how the harbours were linked to their respective settlements, what social and economic functions the harbours possessed within the settlement structure, and whether jetties or piers were built for loading and unloading of boats and ships.

During the previous course of... more Early Middle Age Emporia in the Southwest Baltic and their Harbours During the previous course of the »Baltic Harbours« project it has been demonstrated that, with the array of methods employed which include, primarily, geophysical surveying, geological drilling and archaeological sondages, it is possible to obtain new information on the siting, structure and significance of the harbours attached to the early medieval coastal emporia. The results for the sites of Ralswiek, Usedom and Rostock-Dierkow, summarised in this article, have significantly altered previously held ideas about their genesis and structure: For Ralswiek it can now be assumed that the harbour was not located to the west of the trading site within the area of a lake but, instead, lay to the east on the Große Jasmunder Bodden. At Usedom there is an increasing number of indications suggesting that the harbour associated with the fortified trading site of Bauhof was not located immediately on the northern shores of Lake Usedom but rather in the area of the Jürgensee Lake to the north of Usedom, which occupied a particularly sheltered position within the shadow of Bauhof. In the case of Rostock-Dierkow it has now been established that the area of the settlement excavated at the shore of the River Warnow during the 1980ies was not the waterfront but instead part of the eastern periphery of the trading site. The 8th- and 9th-century harbour was located to the west of the Primelberg on peaty ground of which an area of at least 5000 m2 had been reclaimed with the help of wattle matts, sand fills and timber trackways. Around AD 800 the trading site covered an area of at least 3 ha and was thus many times larger than previously thought. It is intended to continue with the investigations in the coming years and to increase the number of surveys within the area of emporia like Bardy / Świelubie and Puck, which are located within the national territory of Poland. At the same time it is envisaged to intensify the investigation of individual harbours; one of the focusses will be the site of Rostock-Dierkow.
Strongholds-places fortified in one way or the other-were social, economic and religious centres ... more Strongholds-places fortified in one way or the other-were social, economic and religious centres for large territories, as well as for smaller, local units. There is no doubt that the location of these centres within their landscape was chosen with considerable care addressing their intended function. We find strongholds being built in the centres, but also at the peripheries of densely populated areas; strongholds are present in marginal regions, too. Strongholds have been situated along as well as at the crossroads of transit routes, both regarding waterways and roads on land. Strongholds are in naturally protected locations, such as islands, lowlands and promontories, but often, the landscape has been modified to facilitate a stronghold. Due to such a cultural and geographical variety, it can be hypothesized that the investigation of the particular situation of strongholds within their landscape might indicate the specific function of the single site. More importantly, however, such investigations also enable-especially under the application of landscape analyses-a reconstruction of possible stronghold networks. These studies facilitate the creation of new knowledge concerning the use of 'stronghold landscape' across time and space, and help us to understand how societies using strongholds have been adapting these to the landscape and/or vice versa. Furthermore, the erection of fortifications is closely linked with human interaction. Strongholds are always combining real protective functions with demonstrative, symbolic functions. The setting of strongholds in the natural or cultural landscape, respectively, seems to be a key issue for understanding the purpose of their founders. Is it possible to distinguish aggressive from defensive intentions? In what way strongholds reflect phases of raising conflicts or, on the contrary, of conciliation? What was the contemporary perception of strongholds in the landscape like? Which role did abandoned strongholds play? The purpose for this session is to present a comprehensive overview of the current state of research in strongholds within their cultural landscape. In addition, the session aims to summarize and reflect upon the intentions for the establishment of strongholds on particular locations: what reasons were predominant for the situation-functional or strategic, or were strongholds mainly aiming to be just a demonstration of power? In this session, we welcome submissions presenting best practice examples of investigating the landscape of strongholds from different geographical and temporal settings of Europe.
