Havva Alkan Bala received B.Arch. degree (1995) from Middle East Technical University. Her PhD. is about “An Analytical Frame Towards the Arrangement of Urban Interfaces in Residential Areas” (1998-2003). She has been teaching since 1996 in different architectural schools at Selcuk University, Konya Technical University, Anadolu University, Kyrenia American University, LUND University.
Her international articles, book chapters and papers on architecture, architectural education, urban space and cinema have been published. She is the co-editor of the Journal of Design for Resilience in Architecture and Planning (DRArch). Bala, has been published the book called "Mşmarlık Öğrencisi Misin?/Are you an Architecture Student?" in 2020. She is currently Prof. Dr. in the Department of Architecture, Çukurova University.

In Turkey, gated communities have emerged because of neoliberal policies that promotes high-income segment seeking prestige. Gated communities are constructed not only in metropolitan cities such as Ankara, Istanbul, and Izmir, but also in Anatolia. One of these cities is Aydın. It is important to raise the issue of art in students who will be the next generation architects ... more It is important to raise the issue of art in students who will be the next generation architects and creators of qualified settlements. Architectural education is generally about not only buildings as commonly thought, but also an act of design that pushes the limits of thought and imagination. Many schools of architecture that were aware of this “wore buildings”. This current study defines a stimulating process, which is provided by the expected, and unexpected feedbacks for the stakeholders of the education experimented at schools like Selcuk University, which focuses architectural education on structure, construction and building, where conservative, strict and didactic approaches are supported whereas the implementation of any type of unorthodox and unconventional design is viewed suspiciously. Seen from this aspect, it has the potential to guide schools of architecture with similar qualities.

Daniel Libeskind designs and implements structures that are very different from each other and fo... more Daniel Libeskind designs and implements structures that are very different from each other and form contrasts in the designs he has made in historical buildings and circles. As in the different parts of the world, he designed a museum building in the city of Erbil with similar design philosophy. This structure shows a remarkable approach in terms of design criteria, architectural understanding and new conditions of building in historical environment. In this paper, the example of Erbil city museum was taken into consideration, new building design methodologies in the historical environment and evaluations about the concept of urban conservation were made. Daniel Lisbeskind, designed carried out in historic buildings and environment, such differential in the city texture (tissue), forming contrasts, structures were designed and applied. As with the world also designed a museum building in Erbil with similar design philosophy. This building, the design criteria, architectural understanding, main idea and in historical environment new construction conditions, it shows a remarkable approch in the context. Within this article, by taking samples Erbil city museum, historic environment new building design methodology and assessments have been made to the concept of urban conservation.

The mental process is often generated by the sense of sight in modern times. In this sense, cinema, as a visual art, has started to take an active role in the intellectual, conceptual and creative actions of modern man. With the cinema, the realities of the virtual world have become more convincing than the dreams of the real world. It involves person-environment relationships which might not be ours but "look like ours". Universal Design (UD) also puts forward a proactive interaction in-between man and environment. UD is based on equitable, flexible, intuitive, perceptible, tolerant-to-error access with appropriate size and space. While its conceptual basis with its guidelines are commonly constructed on the spatial needs of people with disabilities, it highlights disability does not focus on only permanent, visible, bodily or intellectual (dis)abilities. Every kind of "otherization" creates disability in society. This study aims to investigate how the relationship between architecture and disability in cinema is portrayed by reading through films that are masterpieces covering experiences of different disability groups. The study aims to enlighten old concepts such as "close neighborhood," "gated community," and "cul-de-sac" with a new approach in order to understand whether planned and modern gated communities contain the same aspects of traditional Turkish cul-de-sacs -part of the "fina" concept. According to tradition and culture, the concept of fina is a kind of usage of public space as if it were private. In the modern age, gated communities have created new life styles, spaces and boundaries with their advantages and disadvantages all over the world. The gated community may be called an "architecture of fear," namely fear of the neighbors, fear of theft, fear of the one living outside the gates. On the other hand, cul-de-sacs are derived from friendships and family relations -namely, being friends with relatives, neighbors and nature. Urban space has signified elements like landmark. Landmarks as references signs orient the people. Landmarks are defined as an external point of reference that helps orienting in a familiar or an unfamiliar environment. This study is about to clear out the meaning of landmark for the city users who have perceived reference point with their memory and perception. In other words, this study is about discovering how the city affects the people who experience the urban space within semiotic of landmarks in Konya, Turkey. The method of this study is photo-elicitation to understand how people orient themselves in moving within urban space considering landmarks. Analysis of interview texts, there were six different type of landmarks as; city memory-historical, city landscape/ square, high rise/skyscraper, daily life/city usage, personal memory/personal perception, circulation pattern. In this study the semiology of communication studies codes established by society to produce messages consciously sent and received as signals, signs and symbols.

Conclusions have been drawn about the professional applications and architectural life from the cinematographic level regarding the architect characters and their jobs via the seven films and a total of eleven different architect characters studied. This study aims to revise, through the cinema, the questions of what does an architect do? How does an architect work? What are the tools that an architect uses? How does an architect create their works? What is the mental map of an architect like? In short, who is an architect? New conclusions have been drawn, via a total of eleven different characters of architects in seven films, about architects and architects’ job from the cinematographic level to Professional practiceand architectural life.

It is important to engender a 'sustainable' architectural consciousness in the students who will ... more It is important to engender a 'sustainable' architectural consciousness in the students who will be the next generation architects. In architectural education, design decisions taken during the early phases of the design process play an important role in ensuring concern for the sustainability issue. But, in general, all discussions about the site that have been held since the beginning of the semester get forgotten, and at the end of the design process students usually create projects that ignore the site criteria. In this article, a specific teaching methodology which supports the sustainability issue in the design studio is presented as a teaching/learning experience. The article is an overview of the design studio process illustrated by a case study on academic staff campus housing in Konya and İzmir, Turkey. To solve the same problem with the same brief in different regions requires developing sensitivity to climate issues. The resulting product is good evidence that teaching about sustainability in the design studio is effective.

This paper discusses the validity of the urban interface dichotomy in the urban planning and scie... more This paper discusses the validity of the urban interface dichotomy in the urban planning and scientific literature by means of a new approach and proposes a new model. Although the concept of "Urban Interface" (UI) is discussed widely in the context of urban-rural and/or natural-artificial environment, UI has been used in the computer and communication disciplines, as well as in economy, geography, regional planning, city planning and architecture. UI has also been used in relation to electronic traffic control systems in urban transportation. UI between buildings and city is a relatively new issue in the literature. UI is defined with variant paradigms since the phenomenon is uncertain. This article reports on the use of fuzzy logic to create a kind of expert system for evaluating architectural elements in the context of UI. Fuzzy is the mathematical models of verbal expression on the area of specialization. This study is useful because this study shows a way to transform non-intuitive and precise concepts to the measurable and accurate results into a model. In order to create a model, the definition of UI in literature is evaluated and according to this evaluation a definition in terms of architecture is determined. The model of this new definition is created with using fuzzy logic using the Fuzzy Tec software. The predictions and experiences of a designer are represented in the model, which has been designed to behave like an expert person. Therefore, it has been shown that the definition of "expert system" can be added to architectural software. Lastly, a model that can give a fuzzy logic system for determining the quality of Urban Interface with sixteen parameters has been presented to the scientific field.

In the research area, the affective assessment of four different spaces, which have been changed their function, was made. The research hypothesis is that users’ affective experience is influenced by environmental and architectural design. The method applied is the interpretation of the data obtained by the scores of the pleasure-arousal diagram of the affective and perceptional experience of 100 students in 16 educational spaces belonging to Tabriz Islamic Art University in Iran. Architecture has transformed in a professional field which the universal concepts like sustainability is the main focuse point while designing. In order to give consciousness to the students becoming “world citizens” and to design with “universal values”, educators must create alternative educational circumstance to increase their students’ vision of their role in this profession. In this article, a specific teaching methodology which supports the international cooperation issue in the design studio is presented as teaching/learning experience. Urban space has signified elements like landmark. Landmarks as references signs orient the people. Landmarks are defined as an external point of reference that helps orienting in a familiar or an unfamiliar environment. This study is about to clear out the meaning of landmark for the city users who have perceived reference point with their memory and perception. In other words, this study is about discovering how the city affects the people who experience the urban space within semiotic of landmarks in Konya, Turkey. The method of this study is photo-elicitation to understand how people orient themselves in moving within urban space considering landmarks. Analysis of interview texts, there were six different type of landmarks as; city memory-historical, city landscape/ square, high rise/skyscraper, daily life/city usage, personal memory/personal perception, circulation pattern. In this study the semiology of communication studies codes established by society to produce messages consciously sent and received as signals, signs and symbols.

Conclusions have been drawn about the professional applications and architectural life from the cinematographic level regarding the architect characters and their jobs via the seven films and a total of eleven different architect characters studied. This study aims to revise, through the cinema, the questions of what does an architect do? How does an architect work? What are the tools that an architect uses? How does an architect create their works? What is the mental map of an architect like? In short, who is an architect? New conclusions have been drawn, via a total of eleven different characters of architects in seven films, about architects and architects’ job from the cinematographic level to Professional practiceand architectural life.

It is important to engender a 'sustainable' architectural consciousness in the students who will ... more It is important to engender a 'sustainable' architectural consciousness in the students who will be the next generation architects. In architectural education, design decisions taken during the early phases of the design process play an important role in ensuring concern for the sustainability issue. But, in general, all discussions about the site that have been held since the beginning of the semester get forgotten, and at the end of the design process students usually create projects that ignore the site criteria. In this article, a specific teaching methodology which supports the sustainability issue in the design studio is presented as a teaching/learning experience. The article is an overview of the design studio process illustrated by a case study on academic staff campus housing in Konya and İzmir, Turkey. To solve the same problem with the same brief in different regions requires developing sensitivity to climate issues. The resulting product is good evidence that teaching about sustainability in the design studio is effective.

This paper discusses the validity of the urban interface dichotomy in the urban planning and scie... more This paper discusses the validity of the urban interface dichotomy in the urban planning and scientific literature by means of a new approach and proposes a new model. Although the concept of "Urban Interface" (UI) is discussed widely in the context of urban-rural and/or natural-artificial environment, UI has been used in the computer and communication disciplines, as well as in economy, geography, regional planning, city planning and architecture. UI has also been used in relation to electronic traffic control systems in urban transportation. UI between buildings and city is a relatively new issue in the literature. UI is defined with variant paradigms since the phenomenon is uncertain. This article reports on the use of fuzzy logic to create a kind of expert system for evaluating architectural elements in the context of UI. Fuzzy is the mathematical models of verbal expression on the area of specialization. This study is useful because this study shows a way to transform non-intuitive and precise concepts to the measurable and accurate results into a model. In order to create a model, the definition of UI in literature is evaluated and according to this evaluation a definition in terms of architecture is determined. The model of this new definition is created with using fuzzy logic using the Fuzzy Tec software. The predictions and experiences of a designer are represented in the model, which has been designed to behave like an expert person. Therefore, it has been shown that the definition of "expert system" can be added to architectural software. Lastly, a model that can give a fuzzy logic system for determining the quality of Urban Interface with sixteen parameters has been presented to the scientific field.

In the research area, the affective assessment of four different spaces, which have been changed their function, was made. The research hypothesis is that users’ affective experience is influenced by environmental and architectural design. The method applied is the interpretation of the data obtained by the scores of the pleasure-arousal diagram of the affective and perceptional experience of 100 students in 16 educational spaces belonging to Tabriz Islamic Art University in Iran. In order to give consciousness to the students becoming “world citizens” and to design with “universal values”, educators must create alternative educational circumstance to increase their students’ vision of their role in this profession.
