The famous increase of the middle classes in Latin America was a matter of pride for many of the ... more The famous increase of the middle classes in Latin America was a matter of pride for many of the governments in the region, who felt the satisfaction of duty well done while citizens were happy to gain access to goods and services before only dreamed. However, the vulnerability and fragility that characterizes the emerging middle classes at times when the wind change and forecasts anticipate that the growth will slow in the region, seem to have led to increasing claims and protests.
Drawing on a subjective indicator of middle class as self-perception in the scale of wealth, in this paper we seek to identify by survey data for 18 countries in the region the main features of social claims and their link with emerging middle class. Are social protests an expression of the desire of middle classes to consolidate their gains or rather an expression of frustration of expectations?

La primera es que exista una crisis profunda del sistema de partidos, que solo es probable en sistemas poco institucionalizados.
