Deletion requests
[edit]Please nominate files for deletion using the tags described in Commons:Deletion policy#Detailed guidelines, in case of File:Leichtlins Mariposa, Yosemite.jpg you have blanked the page, better use {{badname|newname.jpg}} in case of a bad named upload. Otherwise no one will recognize your request. Thanks and happy contributing :) --Martin H. (talk) 18:21, 18 July 2009 (UTC)
Checking bot moves to Commons
[edit]Hello, When you check files moved to Commons by bots, it is usually not enough to just remove {{BotMoveToCommons}}. You need to check that the source and author information is correct. The source field of the information template should say where the image came from before it was uploaded to Wikipedia (for example it may be own work by uploader, or it may come from Flickr). The Author field of the template should say who is the author of the image, not who uploaded the file to Wikipedia. Uploader and author can be the same person, but it is usually not if the file is from Flickr. /Ö 21:43, 20 February 2010 (UTC)
Image moved to Commons, bot lost description (save for next time)
[edit]File:Boy in doorway MVNP.jpg was recently moved to Commons from en:WP. I tried to check the bot move, but couldn't get the original description to show -- it's still on the page when I try to edit it, but the template won't pick it up? Help? Thanks, PDTillman (talk) 20:02, 18 February 2010 (UTC)

[edit]Well, you hadn't edited that specific image here, so I didn't know that you'd uploaded it anywhere. I won't complain if you restore the category; I thought you'd simply made a mistake. Because the image was both at en:wp and here, it was a clear case of an F8 speedy deletion. Nyttend (talk) 22:43, 4 January 2011 (UTC)

File:De Havilland twin-engine airmail plane in snow storm, 1920.jpg
[edit]Thanks for your comments. I was not actually very knowledgeable about US Air Mail until I started digging; I'm just a photo archivist with generally good aircraft recognition experience. My explanatory text was done in a rush, and I copied an error from the antiqueairfield website about DH.4B - should have been L.W.F. J-2, also known as "Twin DH" and reportedly 30 built, as on en:wp Airco DH.4 page and elsewhere online. I'm not keen on giving feedback to websites - I had a bad experience with the RAF "webmaster" who rejected out of hand the mere suggestion that his badly researched and badly spelt stuff was in error. Also, I like to think that WP gets such widespread readership that "our" version will eventually get back to various contributing sources, however lofty they are. I'm not a commons file mover, and I was tempted to request a change of file name, but perhaps the connection back to the sources might get a bit lost if we renamed it for disambiguation. Regards, PeterWD (talk) 19:02, 1 December 2011 (UTC)
- I'm fine with renaming it if you want to. And I hear you re correcting outside websites. Thanks again, Tillman (talk) 03:56, 2 December 2011 (UTC)

Welcome, Dear Filemover!
[edit]Hi Tillman, you're now a filemover. When moving files please respect the following advice:
- Use the CommonsDelinker link in the {{Rename}} template to order a bot to replace all ocurrences of the old title with the new one.
- Please do not tag redirects as {{Speedy}}. Other projects, like InstantCommons, might be using the file even though they don't show up in the global usage. Deleting the redirects would break their file references.
- Please know and follow the file rename guidelines.

Photographs by Larry Lamsa
[edit]Hi, I have renamed the category. Just wanted you to know. Very good catch. I would suggest the naming convention "Category:Files from xxx Flickr stream" format. -- とある白い猫 ちぃ? 00:45, 25 May 2012 (UTC)
- Well, there's no apparent consensus to do this: See Category:Photographs by author for hundreds of other Flickr photographers.... --Pete Tillman (talk) 04:01, 25 May 2012 (UTC)
- Oh, how odd. I have recently created Category:Flickr streams. How about "Category:Files from xxx Flickr stream" be a subcategory of "Category:Photographs by xxx" as I think it is important to distinguish Flickr based archives and other archives (such as PD-Old B&W archives) as files from Flikr may need greater supervision at times. I can re-categorize with my bot so you needn't worry about that. Would this be OK? We can have a wider discussion should you deem it necessary. -- とある白い猫 ちぃ? 13:17, 25 May 2012 (UTC)

Hopewell bird
[edit]Per this note at my talk, if not a pipe it probably is an atlatl weight, the bow didn't make it to this part of North America until about 800-1000 CE I think, I must've mispoke when calling it a pipe, the mound is famous for a large cache of them found there during excavations. If the artifact is from the Hopewell Tremper Mound, it means it was deposited sometime sometime between 100 BCE to 500 CE when the mound was constructed. If it was made during the Archaic period 1500 and 1000 BCE, then it wasn't deposited for at least 1000 years after it was made. So something seems wrong somewhere. It's not that it could not have been passed down from hand to hand for 1000 or more years, it just seems unlikely. Does the Walters have an opinion by a professional archaeologist we could use to cite it with? Cheers, Heironymous Rowe (talk) 00:08, 5 December 2012 (UTC)
Help with an image
[edit]Hi!! I saw the great photo you uploaded for the wiki article on the Eel River of California. I had wanted to upload that when I saw it in a local blog, but am always afraid of copyright issues here at commons. Would it be possible do you think to add this image [1] to the commons so we could use it on all the California Indian pages to show the language boundaries? Thanking you for your help! Ellin Beltz (talk) 18:27, 20 December 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks for the kind words. I looked at that image, by a California state agency. I don't think state-govt works are PD, hence probably not eligible for Commons. Sorry! --Pete Tillman (talk) 04:33, 21 December 2012 (UTC)
Cuteness
[edit]I wont change its categorization again, but i want to point out that while it is undeniably cute, and of course may be used in any article on cuteness, its not the only such cute image we have. I have placed the category for baby animals in the category for cuteness, as nearly all of them elicit a cute response (except maybe arthropods). I think that using an image in an article doesnt necessarily put it directly in the category for that article here, as the article subject may be highly subjective, and thus hard to select the correct images. however, its really not a big deal, and i dont want to seem to be pushing my interpretation, so i wont touch its categorization again. I did notice it was "back" in that category, but i thought i had overlooked it, and didnt think to read its edit history.Mercurywoodrose (talk) 01:27, 12 November 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks for the reply, and I see your point. As you say, no big deal. Best, Pete Tillman (talk) 00:12, 14 November 2013 (UTC)

Anasazi mugs and other archaeology images
[edit]Hi, thanks for cleaning up my messy transfer of File:Anasazi mugs.jpg. Since you seem to be much more familiar with transfers than I am I wondered whether I could ask a massive favour - for you to transfer the last images languishing in w:Category:Archaeology images? Re File:Carving in Berven church.jpg;
[edit]I left this in the town cat because I wasn't sure which church it was in -- the Bergen name is from when I thought that was the place name.
If you know the area, & are reasonably comfortable with the church cat, I'm fine with that. I know nothing about the area -- though I'd like to visit sometime! Cheers, Pete Tillman (talk) 23:25, 18 July 2014 (UTC)
- Hello,
- Well, I really don't know this area. I think though that this file refers to the Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-Berven, because of the photographs taken on flickr before and after this one : this photo, taken just before, represents indeed the chapel as we can see on Google earth. Sincerely, --Fab5669 (talk) 09:00, 19 July 2014 (UTC)

Changes to File:Large mutton fat jade displayed in Hotan Cultural Museum lobby.jpg
[edit]Dear Tillman:
I have just reverted this photo back to its original form as I believe the cropping makes it impossible to get a feel of the massive size of the stone without the background showing. Also, the background, showing the doors and part of the lobby of the museum are of interest as well. If you disagree with me, and wish to discuss this further, please contact me on my talk page. He told me you hadn't, but maybe if you talk to him directly you can work something out. We need formal, written permission from him -- see Declaration_of_consent for how to do this.

Important message for file movers
[edit]A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect
user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.
Possible acceptable uses of this ability:
- To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
- To perform file name swaps.
- When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)
Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.
The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect
user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:36, 7 November 2019 (UTC)

Sofia Eulgem photostream
[edit]Hi, I noticed you've uploaded a couple of pictures from Sofia Eulgem's Flickr account. Unfortunately, it looks like all her pictures are licensed for non-commercial use, so they cannot be kept on Commons. You could still contact her directly and ask her to change the licensing on the photos you want to use (some Flickr users are receptive, some will ignore your messages, your mileage may vary). And if you're using the upload wizard, click the "Share images from Flickr", and it'll automatically tell you if the license is compatible or not. Ytoyoda (talk) 16:03, 2 April 2020 (UTC)
- Hi, I've asked her to relicense, and she has agreed. She seems to be having trouble figuring out how to do that at Flickr (which isn't obvious). I sent her a 2nd note, and will check back. Hang on! Cheers, --Pete Tillman (talk) 17:12, 2 April 2020 (UTC)

[edit]Copyright status: File:West Anatolian Star Medallion Carpet (cropped).jpg
This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:West Anatolian Star Medallion Carpet (cropped).jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2023) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and top 5% of most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.
Round 1 will end on UTC.
Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee
