Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2015 is open!

[edit]

You are receiving this message because you voted in R1 of the 2015 Picture of the Year contest.

Dear Finnusertop,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2015 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the tenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2015) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. In Round 1, there were 1322 candidate images. There are 56 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top #1 and #2 from each sub-category. In the final round, you may vote for just one or maximal three image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 28 May 2016, 23:59:59 UTC.

Hello!

To be honest, I don't really get the rules here. Using a copyrighted image is fine but uploading an SVG rework of it (which I spent two hours creating) is prohibited just because it's derivative. Are my other works okay, anyway? Oppashi (talk) 21:02, 18 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Oppashi: Using a copyrighted image is sometimes fine, on some Wikimedia projects such as the English Wikipedia. You can see details here: en:Wikipedia:Non-free content. Uploading non-free images on Wikimedia Commons, however, is never allowed (note how Vok-logo.png has been uploaded to Wikipedia only and not Commons). As for your other images, the answer is "maybe". If the same conditions apply (you think that the original image is copyrighted, and your version of follows the original closely and is a derivative work), then yes. I'd rather not comment on individual cases because North Korean copyrights are a very murky issue (their copyright law is only a few pages long, its definitions are vague, and we don't have access to details about who exactly created and originally published these works and when). If you feel confused by the rules (as we all do; it's impossible to master all copyright laws of all countries and their interactions), then keep studying them, look for precedents, and only work with what you consider clear and safe cases. Derivative works are one of the trickiest aspects of copyright and it's better to stick to well-known applications of law (such as Freedom of panorama photographs of buildings, whose design is copyrighted, allowed in the copyright law of some countries). Finnusertop (talk) 21:17, 18 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
According to the third condition of the guideline Commons:Own work (Using graphics software to create a digital illustration (map, diagram, etc) from scratch) my work should be allowed because it was made from scratch, as I stated on the File talk. Oppashi (talk) 21:22, 18 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Oppashi: But it is not made form scratch. You said it is based on the copyrighted design. Whether you trace it by pencil or software, the medium is irrelevant. Insofar as your version contains the same elements that made the original a copyrightable work in the first place, it is a derivative work of it. Finnusertop (talk) 21:33, 18 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I am very disappointed because of my work was deleted with my message left on the talk page ignored. Actually the Copyright Law of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea permits using my work even without their permission. You said you're confused by it but this is as simple as telling apart white and black:
“Article 32 (Use of copyrighted work without permission)
A copyrighted work may be used without the permission of the copyright holder in the following cases:
(...)
2. when a copyrighted work is reproduced for the purposes of preserving, displaying, reading or lending in such places as a library, an archives, a museum or a memorial hall;
5. when a copyrighted work is broadcast or carried in newspapers or periodicals for the purpose of its introduction;
(...)
7. when a copyrighted work is performed free of charge;”
Oppashi (talk) 23:12, 18 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Wikimedia Commons is none of those places or types of publication, Oppashi, and publishing is not the same as performing. The file was deleted and if you want to challenge that, you need to talk to the deleting admin instead of me. Finnusertop (talk) 23:26, 18 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Kind of you. Oppashi (talk) 23:47, 18 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Tagging copyvios

[edit]

Hi, When tagging copyright violations, please inform the uploader. This is best done using the gagdet. See in your preferences to enable them, tab "Gadget", section "Maintenance tools" : "AjaxQuickDelete" and "Quick delete". These add links in the left column (or right column for Hebrew, Arabic, etc., language interface). Regards, Yann (talk) 18:08, 5 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletions

[edit]

Do not create speedy deletions when the file is not an obvious copyright violation. This is the case for all your recent nominations. Thanks, Yann (talk) 13:12, 20 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, will do! Finnusertop (talk) 21:57, 20 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Dear colleague Finnusertop - I really do not know the copyright status of these pictures which I found on Creative Commons. Do whatever you want, I do not want to point out who and when he sent those pictures on Commons.

Thank you

--Vitek (talk) 06:18, 24 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for dropping by, Vitek. My concern is about the cosmonaut image specifically. All others are properly linked to where they originate from on Commons. Finnusertop (talk) 06:19, 24 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:Keskon logo.svg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. File:Flag of Albanians in Macedonia.png has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Thanks for uploading File:Coat of arms of Slabovia.svg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded ([[:File:Coat of arms of Slabovia.svg]]) and the above demanded information in your request.

Chandongja Park.jpg

File:Chandongja Park.jpg This is a screenshot from Zoom Earth, not from Google. I modified its color using Microsoft Office Picture Manager Auto Correct.Ntsctalk (talk) 11:26, 22 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

[1] Compare the images. Ntsctalk (talk) 11:49, 22 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, Ntsctalk. At the bottom of the Zoom Earth page (when looking at this area) it says "© Zoom Earth, Esri, Maxar". None of them are NASA and none of them provide public domain satellite imagery. The fact that both Google and Zoom give display the same imagery and say Maxar means that it's probably Maxar's imagery, and they don't offer theirs under public domain. Finnusertop (talk) 12:22, 22 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
No.
At the time of Zoom out, it says "©Zoom Earth, JMA/NOAA/CIRA ひまわり8号.Ntsctalk (talk) 12:37, 22 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Ntsctalk, yes, but the image you see when zoomed out that far is not the one we're talking about. When you zoom in enough to see the stadium image, it says "© Zoom Earth, Esri, Maxar". Notice how the copyright line changes as you zoom in or out, as that's when you also see different images. Finnusertop (talk) 13:08, 22 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I cannot find any © Zoom Earth, Esri, Maxar in Korean Peninsula at zooming in. Maybe copyright is different in Japan.Ntsctalk (talk) 13:48, 22 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, Ntsctalk, could be. It would be good to continue this discussion at Commons:Deletion requests/File:Chandongja Park.jpg so that others may see it. Finnusertop (talk) 14:30, 22 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
