Old image

[edit]

Hello. While going through some old stuff of mine I noticed this: Commons:Deletion requests/Image:Paul Verlaine by Emile Cohl.jpg, to which you had added this note: "Deleted... Can be restored next January 1 [2009]." To be honest, I don't remember if this particular image is worth retrieving or not, but a number of others in Category:Émile Cohl seem so far to have survived and it might be worth taking a look. Thanks. - Mu (talk) 19:37, 18 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

That was quick work. No Leonardo, to be sure, but not such a bad image after all. Many thanks! - Mu (talk) 22:00, 18 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Caroline Durieux illustration

[edit]

Hello. I'd love for Caroline Durieux "Gumbo Ya-Ya" illustrations to be shown to be PD so I could upload more of them, but I've not yet found any confirmation. Your feedback is appreciated at Commons:Deletion requests/File:He Believes Everything.png. Cheers, -- Infrogmation (talk) 18:40, 2 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

No source etc...

[edit]

Hello! I just noticed that you clean up in the no xxx categories. That is cool. I just wonder if you check if uploader has ben warned on his/her talkpage before deleting? That way uploader has a chance to fix the problem before deletion. --MGA73 (talk) 15:09, 15 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

No, that's one thing I don't normally check - I expect the person tagging it to have done it (usually automatically via the JavaScript tools); or when an image is tagged as part of the upload process rather than by a person or bot, the big red warning box is there on the resulting page that the uploader sees. The main thing I always check is the file history, to make sure the tagging isn't due to vandalism of the description (which happens once in a while).
So yes, there may be a few cases where uploaders weren't informed - if there's a noticeable number of cases, perhaps a bot should be set up to handle it more quickly. Otherwise, given the two-month backlog in Category:Unknown, deleting images is much more likely to get uploaders' attention than a message on a talk page that they don't visit. (Not that it's a perfect solution either - although we can always undelete when somebody comes back with the needed info, some people will just give up in disgust.) --dave pape (talk) 14:54, 16 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Having said all that - most tagging is done by regulars that I'd trust to do things correctly. I'll try to remember to check on the tagging done by people I don't recognize, to see if there is a problem. --dave pape (talk) 14:58, 16 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

File: Torso_Fragment.JPG

[edit]

Uh oh! Thanks for letting me know. I thought I had it figured out, but now realize I didn't. So, after doing some more research, seems like I can upload it to English Wikipedia under fair use, if I advocate for the fair use purposes it serves. (And include the fair use template.) Does this seem okay? Thanks again. Kpetrole (talk) 05:19, 25 November 2009 (UTC)Kpetrole[reply]

Update: I will be working hard over the next day or two to transfer the images to English Wikipedia under fair use. I did the Torso Fragment image already (props to the HelpChat people for helping me figure out what I needed to add). Feel free to take a look at that one to see if it's okay. And it currently says duplicate image to the one on wikimedia commons, but that one will eventually be deleted, right? Kpetrole (talk) 06:45, 25 November 2009 (UTC)Kpetrole[reply]

Hey Dave, there is currently a featured picture nomination of South America at en.wiki that I think could be made better. Your Antarctica image is wonderful, and I was wondering if you could help me out. If you wanted to create the image yourself, or if you wanted to send the c-program you wrote to create your image, it would be much appreciated. We need your help at the Wikiproject medicine

[edit]

Hello, Sorry for spaming your talk page, but this is very important. On the behalf of the Wikiproject medicine at the en.wikipedia, I am inviting you to be a part of the discussion going on the project's talk page about Patient images, The discussion started after I obtained a permission to more than 23000 dermatology related images, and about 1500 radiology images. As some editors of the Wikiproject medicine have some concerns regarding the policy of using patient images on wikipedia, and regarding patient consents. Also they believe that common's policy is not so clear regarding the issue. And since you are the experts please join us at this very important discussion -- MaenK.A.Talk 14:20, 20 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

South America satelite picture

The image http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/54/South_America_-_Blue_Marble_orthographic.jpg i smisleading and has been wrongly "re-touched". Salar de Uyuni has been colored in brown by some ignorant and Lake Popoo three quarters of the same. Truly pathetic.

Blue Marble rotating

[edit]

Hi Dave,

I'd like to create an image similar to File:Blue_Marble_rotating_1024x1024.ogg, except rotating in the opposite direction and overlaying a KML track. Do you have any suggestions for how one would go about this? Did you use any warping software, or did you use images which were already properly projected? What was your source? 173.170.157.188 14:14, 9 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The source was the Blue Marble composite [1], which is in a simple rectangular projection. I rendered the frames using my own custom OpenGL code to apply the image to a sphere - I'm sure there are many simpler ways using packaged software, I only did it with my own code because it's the way I've done it for a couple decades. For someone starting from scratch, I would suggest just using whatever 3D animation package that you feel comfortable with - any of them should be able to render a sphere with a texture map applied, which is all you need for a spinning earth. --dave pape (talk) 04:37, 12 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

King Albert's Book revisited

[edit]

Howdy. I was looking about and I saw that's you'd uploaded some of the pics from King Albert's Book. I had a dig through it and I think there are a few more pics in the public domain (PD-old-70 for the UK and PD-US-1923-abroad in the US). I made a list of the rest of the illustrations at en:User:Angusmclellan/KAB ills with my guesses. I don't want to step on your toes if you are planning on revisiting this. If you aren't, please say, otherwise I'll assume you have plans for this and leave it alone. Whatever you're planning - or not - here, I will upload the not-yet-PD-old-70 ones on enwp, where PD-US-1923-abroad on its own is acceptable, and tag them with the move-to-Commons year. Joanne siegel.jpg Deletion

[edit]

Hello Davepape. I noticed that one of the images I uploaded a few months back was deleted by you. I'm just wondering why it was deleted and why I wasn't contacted and given some chance to supply what was needed. I have observed this in the logs; I just do not know how to comprehend it "No permission since 10 March 2011". Niluop (talk) 22:29, 18 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Nevermind. I have more information now that was posted to my discussion page. I just wasn't aware of it. Niluop (talk) 22:35, 18 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Wasn't a movie screenshot. Please, provide more convincing argumentation. -- George Serdechny 07:31, 19 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The image lacks correct copyright information. It's sourced to a flickr user who is not the author or copyright owner - the CC-BY license there is meaningless. The flickr page states that it came from MGM by way of the Wisconsin Film Festival, which appears correct, but there's no information on whether or where/when it was actually published prior to February 2000; without that, we can't just assume it's public domain. If the necessary copyright information is found, it can be brought up at Commons:Undeletion requests. --dave pape (talk) 15:06, 21 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
You're joking, aren't you? How on the Earth we are supposed to find out where/when it was actually published prior to February 2000? -- George Serdechny 19:49, 21 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Help! I added a somewhat older image of yours File:Memorial obelisk - Old North Bridge.jpg (2007) to the article on Concord Hymn but it's displaying very wrong. Technical assistance in filemoves for names that are taken by redirects

[edit]

I'm texting you as a recently-active en-speaker Admin, 16 of my uploads were renamed three days ago in a series of multiple identical acts by one of our users, and I need to fix them back (given that the filenames which had existed prior to those acts were valid and that the renaming was invalid), but my filemove feature isn't helpful for this because all superseded filenames were automatically converted to respective redirect pages, which makes the restoration to them fail (you get a "The name you have specified exists"). Very kindly help. I messaged another Admin two or three days ago with this pressing request, strangely however no action has so far been taken and the files are still corrupt and I'm very very unhappy; if I'm granted the delete tool I can manage this by just kicking the redirs and retrieve my filenames as easy as editing anything else, but since I can't delete the redirs it's all about getting you repairing it. thank you 16 times.

Please participate in the Universal Code of Conduct consultation on Wikimedia Commons!

[edit]

Dear Davepape

Thank you for your hard work to create the sum of all knowledge that is freely sharable to every single human being across the world. As our diverse community grows, we need a guideline that will help all of our work collectively and constructively where everyone feels safe, welcomed, and part of a team. That is why the Wikimedia movement is working on establishing a global guideline called the Universal Code of Conduct, often referred to as UCoC.

After the months-long policy consultation, we have prepared a policy (available in many languages) that has been ratified by the Board of Trustees. We’re currently in the second phase of the process. During this round of consultation, we want to discuss the implementation of this policy. As a member of the functionary team of Wikimedia Commons, your opinion on enforcement is of great value. We want to hear from you on how this policy can be enforced on the Wikimedia Commons community and what might be needed to do so. There are a few enforcement questions so you can easily outline your answers based on them. Please do not hesitate to bring any more questions/challenges you think are not yet discussed.

The discussion is taking place on Commons:Universal Code of Conduct consultation. You can also share your thoughts by replying to this message (Please ping me so I get notified), posting your message on my talk page. I am aware that some thoughts cannot be expressed publicly, so you can always share your opinion by emailing me as well.

As a valued member of the Commons community, please share your thoughts, ideas, and experiences that relate to UCoC. Let us know what needs to be improved so we can build a more friendly and cooperative space to increase editor engagement and retention of new users.

Wikimedia projects are governed by you. So, it is you who needs to step up to ensure a safe, comfortable, and pleasant working environment.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you! Wikitanvir (WMF) (talk) 10:18, 5 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I would like to inform you that we now have a survey in place to take part in the UCoC consultation. It is not a long one and should take less than 10 minutes to complete. You can take the survey even if you have already participated in the on-wiki consultation. It has a different set of questions and allows you to participate anonymously and privately.

As a member of the Commons functionaries, your opinion is especially essential. Please click here to participate in the survey.

You are still welcome to participate in the on-wiki discussions. If you prefer you can have your say by sending me an email. You can also drop me an email if you want to have a one-to-one chat.

Thank you for your participation! Wikitanvir (WMF) 13:53, 12 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Alvast mijn oprechte dank. Bart Vergote

How we will see unregistered users

[edit]

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

File:US flag burning.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Hello,

I am messaging you because a contest for a sound logo for Wikimedia is being developed and your opinion as a Wikimedia Commons admin is appreciated. My team would like to know if it is possible for the top finalist sound logos in the contest to have attribution temporarily hidden from public view until all the votes are final? The idea is to let the public judge the sound logo contestants based on the merit of the logo, not the person or people who made it. Again, any feedback is appreciated.

Thank you,
