This paper will discuss Fairfield University’s use of Web 2.0 and social network tools to promote... more This paper will discuss Fairfield University’s use of Web 2.0 and social network tools to promote the concept of global citizenship to its undergraduate students. The International Studies Program is leading a university-wide effort to develop a Global Citizenship project, in which web technology will be vital to capture and disseminate student experiences that advance global engagement. Beginning in 2008, the International Studies program began collaboration with Fairfield University’s DiMenna-Nyselius Library to utilize technology tools to help forge connections with people and ideas, most notably with students involved with the study abroad program. The Library is a leader in educational technology on campus, training the University community on Web 2.0 technology by providing blog development training for faculty and students and managing social network pages to reinforce the availability of academic resources. Together the Library and International Studies program have adopted methodologies to promote global awareness to U.S. undergraduate students through Web technology. The use of blogs has proven to create opportunities for critical reflection of academic materials and international experiences in the study abroad program. These blogs are the fore-runner to the adoption of an undergraduate e-journal to conceptualize and disseminate these experiences with academic rigor. The International Studies program uses social networking sites such as Facebook, YouTube, and blogs to share academic and study abroad experiences of its majors. This paper will highlight the progress of the aforementioned methodologies for promoting global citizenship and the challenges of measuring the long-term effectiveness of these approaches.

The discussion then turns to the factors that facilitate engagement, as well as key challenges that often arise in the course of collaborative ventures.
