Isabel Garcez
Isabel Garcez is doing her second PhD (Portuguese Language Literature) by University of Coimbra. She was awarded her first PhD by the University of Lisbon Faculty of Arts and Humanities in 2017. Her doctoral thesis is entitled “O papel da edição literária no mercado da cultura”. Since 1993, she has worked as an editor (1996-2016 for the publishing house Editorial Caminho). She graduated with a BA (Hons) in Modern Languages and Literature – Portuguese Studies (1993) and with a Master in Comparative Literature (2002) from University of Lisbon Faculty of Arts and Humanities. From the same institution, she also holds a postgraduate certificate in Education (1995) and in Editorial Techniques (1997). In 2008, she completed an advanced training course on textual editing at Catholic University. She studies the new literary voices, the role of the editor as a cultural mediator, and the socio-economic value of literature in the publishing market and the cultural and creative industries. Another focus of her research work is the role played by the literature in new, sustainable cultural ecosystems, especially as a promoter of higher levels of aesthetic literacy from the viewpoint of democracy in creative production and of the democratization of reception. During her career at Editorial Caminho, she performed editing functions, namely, the selection of original texts for publication and literary editing of original texts. As Editorial Coordinator, she has done the supervision of the entire production process, including the promotion of literary works and authors. She has worked with all type of publications: foreign literature, essay collections, textbooks, illustrated albums, literature for children, and so forth. But in the last 10 years, she has worked almost in exclusivity with original texts contributing to Portuguese language literature. She often participates in book fairs, literary festivals and similar events, accompanying authors and establishing contact with mediators and readers. Between 2012 and 2016, alongside her Editorial Coordinator functions, she was Chief Editor in the children’s literature department. Since 2015, she has been a guest teacher at the University of Lisbon Faculty of Arts and Humanities, delivering an optional course on text reviewing within the Textual Criticism programme. This course is divided into two levels and has a total of 32 hours (4 ECTS each). Since 2003, she has been member of Associação Cultural Prado. Besides being part of its executive committee, she is responsible for the publication of this association’s books. These are characterized by collective authorship and by involving authors from the most recent generation of Portuguese writers. She has also been in charge of several projects, including: “Vanguardas Ruminantes” in partnership with the Centro National de Cultura (2009) - a cycle with young Portuguese writers of the 21st Century; and, “3iii – Innovation + Independence = Identity” in partnership with the newspaper Le Monde Diplomatique – Portuguese Edition (2010) and the involvement of young Portuguese Arts and Sciences thinkers. In 2018, she joined the jury of the 1st edition of the Book Design Award organized by the Portuguese entity Direção-Geral do Livro, Arquivos e Bibliotecas.
