Expression of prion (PrP) has been reported to be a marker of poor prognosis in a series of Caucasian PDAC cases. We determined the prognostic value of PrP in a racially and geographically diverse population-based series of PDAC cases. PrP expression was examined in 142 PDAC cases from three cancer registries. Cases included 71 Caucasian, 54 Asian/Pacific Islanders and 17 Blacks diagnosed from 1983-2000, and followed through 2008. Hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the association of PrP expression with survival were computed after adjustment for case attributes. The dynamics of entanglement and quantum discord (QD) of the spins of the two particles is investigated by regarding the 1D N-spin array as the environment. It is found that although the entanglement may suffers a sudden death and a sudden birth in the evolution, it can neither be generated nor become larger than its initial value. Different from the entanglement dynamics, QD can be amplified, and even be generated by the interaction between particles and the common environment. We also observe that QD decays asymptotically to zero and later experiences a rival when the average number of excitation in the 1D N-spin array becomes larger in the case of nonzero inter-distance between two particles.

The phenotype, developmental requirements, and functional mechanisms of immune protective macrophages that mediate the induction of transplantation tolerance remain elusive. Here, we demonstrate that costimulatory blockade favored accumulation of DC-SIGN-expressing macrophages that inhibited CD8(+) T cell immunity and promoted CD4(+)Foxp3(+) Treg cell expansion in numbers. Mechanistically, that simultaneous DC-SIGN engagement by fucosylated ligands and TLR4 signaling was required for production of immunoregulatory IL-10 associated with prolonged allograft survival. Deletion of DC-SIGN-expressing macrophages in vivo, interfering with their CSF1-dependent development, or preventing the DC-SIGN signaling pathway abrogated tolerance. Together, the results provide new insights into the tolerogenic effects of costimulatory blockade and identify DC-SIGN(+) suppressive macrophages as crucial mediators of immunological tolerance with the concomitant therapeutic implications in the clinic.

Here, we report that specific deletion of bone-producing osteocalcin (Ocn)-expressing cells in vivo markedly reduces T-competent progenitors and thymus-homing receptor expression among bone marrow hematopoietic cells. Decreased intrathymic T cell precursors and decreased generation of mature T cells occurred despite normal thymic function. The Notch ligand DLL4 is abundantly expressed on bone marrow Ocn(+) cells, and selective depletion of DLL4 from these cells recapitulated the thymopoietic abnormality. These data indicate that specific mesenchymal cells in bone marrow provide key molecular drivers enforcing thymus-seeding progenitor generation and thereby directly link skeletal biology to the production of T cell-based adaptive immunity.

We evaluated the effects of eBeam exposure at a range of doses (0.03 - 0.12 kGy) on development of the cowpea bruchid (Callosobruchus maculatus) at various stages of its life cycle. Differential radiosensitivity was detected during egg development. Early and intermediate stages of eggs never hatched after exposure to the dose of 0.03 kGy, whereas a substantial portion of black-headed (i.e. late) eggs survived irradiation even at 0.12 kGy. We analyze the coherent transport of a single photon, which propagates in a one-dimensional coupl... more We analyze the coherent transport of a single photon, which propagates in a one-dimensional coupled-resonator waveguide and is scattered by a controllable two-level system located inside one of the resonators of this waveguide. Our approach, which uses discrete coordinates, unifies low and high energy effective theories for single-photon scattering. We show that the controllable two-level system can behave as a quantum switch for the coherent transport of a single photon. This study may inspire new electro-optical single-photon quantum devices. We also suggest an experimental setup based on superconducting transmission line resonators and qubits.

Useful models for studying this metabolic problem are Sprague-Dawley rats fed low-fat (LF) or high-fat (HF) diets beginning at 28 days of age. Through experimental design, their dietary intakes of energy, protein, vitamins, and minerals per kg body weight (BW) do not differ in order to eliminate confounding factors in data interpretation. The 24-h energy expenditure of rats is measured using indirect calorimetry. A regression model is constructed to accurately predict BW gain based on diet, initial BW gain, and the principal component scores of respiratory quotient and heat production. There were approximately 40,000 to 56,000 cells in the retinal ganglion cell layer. The density of ganglion cells was divided into six classes and the area of highest cell density (central area) was located at the temporal area to the optic disc in normal fish. At the early regeneration stages after optic nerve crush, the percentage of lost cells increased gradually. Cell density had fallen first in the central area. At the late regeneration stages, there was an approximately 20% loss of ganglion cells during optic nerve regeneration. The results suggest that the loss of cells may undergo apoptosis rather than necrosis. A wave of cell loss started in the central area and spread progressively further into periphery. Not having enough breast milk has been frequently reported as a reason for supplementing and weaning. The objective was to explore maternal perception of indicators and causes of self-reported insufficient milk supply (IMS) among a sample of southwestern Chinese mothers. This was a cross-sectional study, conducted in a hospital in Chengdu, China. The majority of mothers were of Han ethnicity and primiparous. Most initiated breastfeeding (n = 325, 95.3%). Among mothers who had weaned by the time of questionnaire completion, more than half (n = 52) reported IMS as a reason, and 53.8% of these mothers reported this occurring during the first 2 days postpartum. Deregulation of beta-catenin signaling has been observed in a broad range of human tumors. In this report, we investigated whether tyrosine kinase inhibitor STI-571 could inhibit the beta-catenin signaling activity and hence suppress cell proliferation. Our results demonstrated that STI-571 effectively inhibited the constitutive activity of beta-catenin signaling in human colon cancer cells as well as the Wnt1-induced activation of beta-catenin signaling in HOS, HTB-94, and HEK 293 cells. Furthermore, STI-571 was shown to effectively suppress the proliferation of human colon cancer cells. Thirty Sprague-Dawley rats were subjected to produce common peroneal nerve injuries model,and the length of injury was 5 mm. All the rats were divided into 3 groups: BYHWD group, mecobalamin group and model group. The drugs were given by gavage daily for 18 days. Footprint test was performed at the 18th day after surgery to evaluate toe spread function (TSF). Electrophysiology was performed at the 18th day after operation to determine the nerve conduct velocity (NCV). The wet weight ratio and section area of tibial muscle were also measured. We analyze the coherent transport of a single photon, which propagates in a one-dimensional coupl... more We analyze the coherent transport of a single photon, which propagates in a one-dimensional coupled-resonator waveguide and is scattered by a controllable two-level system located inside one of the resonators of this waveguide. Our approach, which uses discrete coordinates, unifies low and high energy effective theories for single-photon scattering. We show that the controllable two-level system can behave as a quantum switch for the coherent transport of a single photon. This study may inspire new electro-optical single-photon quantum devices. We also suggest an experimental setup based on superconducting transmission line resonators and qubits.

Useful models for studying this metabolic problem are Sprague-Dawley rats fed low-fat (LF) or high-fat (HF) diets beginning at 28 days of age. Through experimental design, their dietary intakes of energy, protein, vitamins, and minerals per kg body weight (BW) do not differ in order to eliminate confounding factors in data interpretation. The 24-h energy expenditure of rats is measured using indirect calorimetry. A regression model is constructed to accurately predict BW gain based on diet, initial BW gain, and the principal component scores of respiratory quotient and heat production. Changes in number and distribution of retinal ganglion cells were studied after optic nerve crush... more Changes in number and distribution of retinal ganglion cells were studied after optic nerve crush in zebrafish (Brachydanio rerio) with retinal wholemount. There were approximately 40,000 to 56,000 cells in the retinal ganglion cell layer. The density of ganglion cells was divided into six classes and the area of highest cell density (central area) was located at the temporal area to the optic disc in normal fish. At the early regeneration stages after optic nerve crush, the percentage of lost cells increased gradually. Cell density had fallen first in the central area. At the late regeneration stages, there was an approximately 20% loss of ganglion cells during optic nerve regeneration. The results suggest that the loss of cells may undergo apoptosis rather than necrosis. A wave of cell loss started in the central area and spread progressively further into periphery. We examined the response of the hypothalamic suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN) to growth hormone releasing peptide-6 (GHRP-6) by assessing effects on the phase of locomotor activity rhythms, SCN neuronal discharges, and the potential signaling pathways involved in the drug action on circadian rhythms. The results showed that bolus administration of GHRP-6 (100 μg/kg ip) at the beginning of subjective night (CT12) induced a phase delay of the free-running rhythms in male C57BL/6J mice under constant darkness, but did not elicit phase shift at other checked circadian time (CT) points. Although recent studies showed that the elevated expression of S100A6 was associated with the stage and lymphatic permeation of CRC, little is known about whether and how S100A6 contributes to CRC development. Here we investigated the S100A6 expression in CRC tissues and cell lines, and explored the molecular mechanisms underlying the role of S100A6 in CRC development by examining cell proliferation and migration in vitro, and tumorigenicity in nude mice. Via the on-demand classical field being applied to the atom, the router can extract a single photon from the incident channel, and then redirect it into another. The efficient function of the perfect reflection of the single-photon signal in the incident channel is rooted in the coherent resonance and the existence of photonic bound states.

Not having enough breast milk has been frequently reported as a reason for supplementing and weaning. The objective was to explore maternal perception of indicators and causes of self-reported insufficient milk supply (IMS) among a sample of southwestern Chinese mothers. This was a cross-sectional study, conducted in a hospital in Chengdu, China. The majority of mothers were of Han ethnicity and primiparous. Most initiated breastfeeding (n = 325, 95.3%). Among mothers who had weaned by the time of questionnaire completion, more than half (n = 52) reported IMS as a reason, and 53.8% of these mothers reported this occurring during the first 2 days postpartum. Beta-Catenin is a critical transducer of the Wnt signal pathway and plays an important role in ma... more Beta-Catenin is a critical transducer of the Wnt signal pathway and plays an important role in many developmental and cellular processes. Deregulation of beta-catenin signaling has been observed in a broad range of human tumors. In this report, we investigated whether tyrosine kinase inhibitor STI-571 could inhibit the beta-catenin signaling activity and hence suppress cell proliferation. Our results demonstrated that STI-571 effectively inhibited the constitutive activity of beta-catenin signaling in human colon cancer cells as well as the Wnt1-induced activation of beta-catenin signaling in HOS, HTB-94, and HEK 293 cells. Furthermore, STI-571 was shown to effectively suppress the proliferation of human colon cancer cells. Finally, we demonstrated that the Wnt1-mediated activation of a GAL4-beta-catenin heterologous transcription system was effectively inhibited by STI-571.
