This paper investigates why creationism persists in the American public. The findings presented suggest that the subjective experience of God and biblical literalism are the most important predictor for whether a person will endorse creationist ideas, based on a logistic regression conducted on data collected at two major Midwestern Universities. Knowledge of evolution was found to be a significant predictor of lower endorsement of creationism as well, but with much lower impact than the religious variables.
