This paper is a comparative study of a folk art form , terracotta temple panels in the Indian state of West Bengal  and Bangladesh. The study focussed on terracotta temple panels .Prior to the partition of India  in 1947, there was one Bengal. And so it is natural that both Bengals will share a rich cultural heritage. And so the terracotta panels in Hindu  temples  of both Bengals will have similar  reflections on society and polity.I delivered this lecture as Chairperson of a Technical Session of  20th International Conference of Bharata Vidya Charcha Kendra , Burdwan (12th & 13th March, 2022)

The term 'Rajdharma'  is applied in India to a brand of political philosophy that  discusses the duties of a king .It has various sources. I have discussed 'Rajdharma' on the basis of the principles of kingship discussed in 'The Sukraniti' which was translated by Benoy Kumar Sarkar, a classical Indian sociologist. Two  of the principles enunciated by Sukracharya are 1) a king must not divide his kingdom;2) a king must not divide and rule. He should not set father against sons or brothers against brothers. I have applied these principles to examine how far Indian rulers in the Centre and the States have followed these precepts to integrate Indian society .

Mutual Funds are of more than academic interest. They are big business and investment companies make every effort to woo the potential investor by painting a rosy picture of high returns for their investment. At the end of an ad, they add a disclaimer in very small print that Mutual Funds are subject to market risks. There is every possibility of the potential investor of ignoring this disclaimer. Investors should read the fine print before purchasing Mutual Funds. The objective of this present paper is to educate investors on the pros and cons of investing in Mutual Funds. It is based on my own experience of investing in Mutual Funds. Unlike bank deposits, which are classified as savings, Mutual Funds are investments. Bank deposits in India are insured. In case of bank failure, a customer can get back up to Rs.500,000/-. Unlike bank deposits, Mutual Funds are not insured. All types of Mutual Funds are subject to market risks. Their Net Asset Value depends on how well the share market and the specific shares in which they invest, perform. That, in turn is dependent on the laws of supply and demand. Weigh all options carefully before investing in Mutual Funds. This is the summary of the Bengali article entitled, “Mutual Fund e Logni kora kotota labhjonok?’.It  was published in ‘Dharabahik’, Sarad Edition, 22nd Year, 1429BS(2022). (p.222-226).

Is India's democracy a gift of the British? If so, how can we explain India's  democratic traditions prevalent in the hoary past , of which the Greeks spoke of  glowingly and the Buddhist chronicles recorded ? How can we ignore the democratic practices prevalent in medieval India? Unearthing India's democratic traditions will destroy the myth of 'Oriental
Despotism' which the Westerners claimed to have destroyed .The present paper is the outcome of Delivered an Invited Talk entitled India’s Democratic Heritage and Contemporary Political Realities at ICSSR Sponsored Two Day National Seminar on ‘India’s Glorious Cultural Heritage: Continuity and Changes’ (23rd and 24th March, 2023) organized by Kashipur Michael Madhusudan Mahavidyalaya, Purulia.  It has been published in Subhrajit Chatterjee ed.  'India’s Glorious Cultural Heritage: Continuity and Changes' (Selected Papers from ICSSR Sponsored Two Day National Seminar , Organized by Department of Sociology, Michael Madhusudan Mahavidyalaya , Kashipur, Purulia, West Bengal, India), Levant Books, India (ISBN: 978-93-91741-40-2)p.1-40.

Neoliberalism may be regarded as the ideology of advanced capitalism. Liberalism laid emphasis on political freedom and economic liberty or laissez faire. It emphasised the role of markets in contributing to human welfare. Unlike liberalism, Neo liberalism is not concerned with political liberty. Its sole aim is to ensure smooth functioning of markets. Neo liberalism has led to predatory capitalism. Neo liberalism is leading to wholesale loot of developing countries with active help of the ruling class of these countries. Corruption, loot of banks and shady businesses have become endemic. Adani , for example, has been accused of inflating the prices of the shares of his companies. There is an unholy nexus between big business and the ruling party, which explains why such measures like contract farming have been sought to be introduced. But people are actively resisting Globalization, which is actually the application of neo liberalism. The successful farmers ‘movement, which forced Narendra Modi to withdraw the controversial farm laws, is the latest example of such resistance in India. Marxism lays emphasis on socially owned economic goods and services. Under socialism, the individual has the potential for all round development. Neo Liberalism emphasises privatization, marketization and withdrawal of the State from economic and welfare activities.

The corporate world is presently in turmoil. Mass firings, hiring gig workers, malpractices like wage theft have become the order of the day. In their quest for profit maximization , the corporates are depriving workers of their livelihoods. But there is no escape from recession, which is stalking the world economy, according to experts. Job security and trust between employer and employee are now history . In the present scenario is employee loyalty an asset or a burden to the company? Narayan Murthy rightly advised workers to love their job but not their company because "you never know when company stops loving you." Marx and Engels wrote in  "The Communist Manifesto"(1848)"the bourgeoisie  ....is incompetent to assure an existence to its slave within his slavery." By "slaves", they meant the proletariat . And the proletariat is rebelling in ways not thought of before. Apart from strikes, they have adopted "work to rule' approach and do not hesitate to vent their grievances in the social media or oppose company policies which , in their eyes , are politically incorrect. They have also approached courts and have got corporate or government decisions to dismiss them overturned. In other words, we find a full scale class struggle in progress throughout the world.
The present lecture, which was delivered to the students of MA in Sociology at The University of Burdwan, deals with corporate and government employment policies.

The world of work is fast changing. New concepts and terms are emerging. The Gen Z generation is developing its own conceptions about what work should be . Management policies that result in down gradation of privileges by workers are being strongly resisted. In some cases employees' revolt is assuming novel  forms. Excessive pressure of work  is causing problems like burnout. Employees are openly discussing their strategies and tactics to combat management pressure  on social media. Managements have to deal with employee grudges at the workplace.  The lecture discusses problems which should concern us like burnout, grey work, workplace toxicity, wage and salary insurance, and work-life balance. Governments have had to deal with new issues like Work from Home and protect employees from employer despotism.

 This paper was the outcome of a series of lectures on the subject “Recent Trends in Work” delivered to the students of The University of Burdwan. The main objective of this lecture is to introduce the students to the fast-changing world of work. It deals with some of the following questions which are contained in the “Learning Objectives”.
• Does grey work impede productivity?
• What does Generation Z think about work? Why does Gen Z’s spending habits matter ?  What steps are employers taking to attract and retain talent?
• Is Work from Home on the way out? What should the elements of a fair compensation policy be? Have countries specific policies on remote workers?
• Why do corporations need to combat burnout? Why are employees planning to quit their jobs? What is wage or salary insurance? What is life/work balance?
• This lecture also introduces the student to the latest office lingo.
• This lecture will be useful to students and teachers of Sociology of Work, Industrial Sociology and Human Resource Management.

Israel's genocidal war against Hamas has cost the Palestinians in terms of lives lost and wounded people . The deaths  among the civilian population are increasing by leaps  and bounds thanks to Israel's relentless bombing of Gaza and denial of any humanitarian aid  to the besieged Palestinians. The leaders of the western world have acted hypocritically. While they support Ukraine against Russian aggression, they repeatedly opposed moves to bring about a cease fire in Gaza and pressurise Israel to talk peace. Students throughout the world, irrespective of their socio-economic status,  are sensitive people who cannot remain immune to the massacre of innocents in Gaza in the name of hunting Hamas. Hence they have strongly protested despite severe state repression in the United States and India. The global protest by students has the support of civil society in their respective countries. Nearly a century ago, a group of researchers led by Prof. Elton Mayo of the Harvard Business School embarked on a series of studies on industrial workers at the Hawthorne plant of the Western Electric Company. A report of these studies is available in the book ‘Management and the Worker’ by Roethlisberger and Dickson. The main objective of the researchers was to find out what determines the productivity of workers. Earlier, Taylor’s ‘Scientific Management’ laid stress on the physical and economic determinants of worker productivity. As the studies progressed, new and puzzling findings emerged. Ultimately some of Taylor’s findings were refuted. The Hawthorne Studies made a serendipitous discovery of the Informal Group. The Hawthorne Effect is also a major contribution to industrial research. The Hawthorne Studies gave birth to the Human Relations School and two important disciplines -Industrial Sociology and Human Resource Management.

Six years have passed since the police fired on demonstrators demanding a safe and pollution free environment at Thoothukudi in Tamil Nadu on May 22,2018.The people were demonstrating against Sterlite Copper , whom they accused of polluting their environment. The then Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu , Paneerselvam, blamed the people for the firings, openly defending the police. Since then there has been an enquiry commission. Sterlite remains closed. India has become a net importer of copper unlike the Sterlite days when the country exported copper. But have people , whose sons/daughters and other relatives were killed got justice? What are the results of the Commission of Inquiry ? Can the anti-
Sterlite  movement be termed as an anti-Globalization movement? These are some of the questions which have been discussed in this lecture which was delivered to the students of MA in Sociology on 25th June, 2024.The lecture draws on my previous paper on the subject.

The objective of carceral institutions has changed from being institutions to discipline and punish offenders for their crimes to reforming the prisoners and making them fit for social life after their release. Cultural therapy is one such method of reforming prisoners. West Bengal has become a pioneer in culture therapy thanks to efforts by former Inspector General (Correctional Homes) B.D. Sharma, who tried to implement the provisions of West Bengal Correctional Services Act 1992 in letter and spirit. He roped in a number of artists in various fields, like art, dance and drama to train the inmates in cultural activities. These artists wholeheartedly  dedicated themselves to reforming the inmates through cultural activities. Some of the inmates have since been released. But has society accepted the reformed prisoners?

There is an unholy nexus between big business and the ruling party, which explains why such measures like contract farming have been sought to be introduced. But people are actively resisting Globalization, which is actually the application of neo liberalism. The successful farmers ‘movement, which forced Narendra Modi to withdraw the controversial farm laws, is the latest example of such resistance in India. Marxism lays emphasis on socially owned economic goods and services. Under socialism, the individual has the potential for all round development. Neo Liberalism emphasises privatization, marketization and withdrawal of the State from economic and welfare activities.

There is no doubt that British colonialism has done immeasurable harm to Indian society . But , at the same time as Marx pointed out, British rule had unleashed the only social revolution in India. The British brought in their trail modernizing forces which impacted on Indian society and led to progressive social change. One of these  modernizing forces  is western education in the English language. Western education led to the rise of an youth culture in India. Student or youth activism was  unheard of in pre-British India. With the rise of colonial education educated youth began to rebel against prevalent norms of an orthodox society, many of which were mired in superstition and were dehumanizing . They did not stop there. The student movement in  India became part of India’s freedom struggle. The participation of the students in India’s freedom movement  reflected the ‘back to the people spirit’ of student movements that Feuer  theorized about. This  lecture will be useful to students of Education, History, Political Science, and Sociology.

This  PowerPoint Presentation was prepared by me for my talk  in the documentary film , 'Vidyasagar at 200: An Unending Mission' to be Produced by Gitika Trust , Kolkata. It deals with the social reform movements of  great 19th century Bengali scholar , activist and social reformer, Pandit Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar, whose Birth Bicentenary we are now observing in 2020.
The objective of this PPT is to discuss the social , educational and linguistic reforms of Vidyasagar. The work is divided into two parts-Part I deals with Vidyasagar's educational reforms and reform of the Bengali language.Part II deals with his social reform movements -his campaign against child marriage  and Kulin polygamy and his campaign in favour of widow marriage.

The media plays an important role in modern society. Throughout history the Press has played its  role as a watchdog of democracy  and a critique of governments and public officials. The existence of a free Press is the sine qua non of a democracy. The objective of this paper is to examine the  role of the print media as an agency of social criticism.
In studying print media I have followed the dialectical approach of Karl Marx. My method of enquiry is a detailed analysis  of news reports and editorials of selected newspapers. My method of presentation is through  a series of case studies .
These  case studies are divided into : 1) presentation of news reports  and 2) editorials.1) News reports are presented in a manner that catches the eye of the reader and makes compelling reading. The titles and contents of the items reveal that news is not presented in a neutral manner .Social criticism is evident in the manner in which a news item is presented. B. Editorials reflect the attitude of the newspaper towards various events and policies of the government. Unlike news items in which objectivity is sought to be maintained with a minimum of  commentary , in editorials the leader writer is free to criticize the polices or events on which the item is being written .The editorials do criticize the activities of members of society and policies of governments. From an analysis of these case studies we may conclude that the print media in India is performing its job of acting as an agent of social criticism.
