Opera One R3 rollout continues with new ways to customize your Tab Islands

Hey all,

This fall, we’re starting to deliver an updated version of our flagship browser for desktop: Opera One R3. Before we ship the whole package, you’ll be able to test its new features in the early access version of Opera One. We kicked off last week with the introduction of Opera One AI, and in today’s second round of updates we’re introducing new ways to customize Tab Islands.

Tab Islands have been a core aspect of Opera One since its launch as it created a new and more intuitive way to group tabs. Tab Islands allows users to keep related tabs together in groups, which can be expanded, collapsed, and moved around within the tab bar. One of Opera’s signature features, Tab Islands are beloved by you, our users, for the level of effortless organization it brings to life online.

Today, we’re responding to your requests to introduce even more ways to customize Tab Islands. With this update you’ll now be able to name your Tab Islands and to choose the color of the Tab Island handle.

Suppose you’re already thinking about the holidays and you have all your gift ideas in one Tab Island; now you can make it red and call it “My Festive Wishlist.” Or maybe the increasingly cold weather already has you dreaming of a vacation this spring somewhere in the warm and sunny. Now you can name that Tab Island “Operation Beach,” and make the handle that light blue color of the water you imagine yourself happily floating around in.

To customize your Tab Islands within Opera, simply hover your cursor over the Tab Island handle – you’ll see an updated tooltip appear with new options.

This update follows last week’s upgrade of Opera’s browser AI, which is now based on the Neon Chat Agent from our new agentic browser, Opera Neon. The new Opera One AI is faster and smarter than our previous solution, Aria, and can do some big things with your Tab Islands too. Let’s say you have a dozen tabs open in your “Festive Wishlist” Tab Island, all of them to do with different pairs of headphones that you might like to buy for a friend. Now you can ask Opera One AI “Analyze all these headphones to tell me which pair has the best reviews at the lowest price,” and it will pick your winner. To find out more about the changes to Opera’s browser AI, read our blog here.

Keep your eye out for the next update to see what’s coming in Opera One R3, and keep sharing your thoughts and ideas with us! Today’s update was inspired by your feedback, which we’re always happy to hear.
