Samuel Hirszenberg is an artist who deserves to be more widely known: his work intertwined modern... more Samuel Hirszenberg is an artist who deserves to be more widely known: his work intertwined modernism and Jewish themes, and he influenced later artists of Jewish origin. Born into a traditional Jewish family in Łódź in 1865, Hirszenberg gradually became attached to Polish culture and language as he pursued his artistic calling. Like Maurycy Gottlieb before him, he studied at the School of Art in Kraków, which was then headed by the master of Polish painting, Jan Matejko. His early interests were to persist with varying degrees of intensity throughout his life: his Polish surroundings, traditional east European Jews, historical themes, the Orient, and the nature of relationships between men and women. He also had a lifelong commitment to landscape painting and portraiture.

In 1907 David Pijade, a poet, writer and translator of Sephardic Jewish origin from Belgrade, pub... more In 1907 David Pijade, a poet, writer and translator of Sephardic Jewish origin from Belgrade, published an article entitled “Serbian Renaissance” in Pregled, a new cultural magazine launched by him and a Serbian poet, Velimir Rajić. The article called its Serbian readers to turn to their folk heritage – folk-songs, art and architecture – as sources for a new, national Serbian art. The same issue of Pregled, as well subsequent numbers, included a selection of Pijade’s translations from Friedrich Nietzsche’s Thus Spoke Zarathustra. A similar parallel between Nietzsche’s thought and the renaissance of Jewish culture is found in the young Martin Buber’s writings, which, as the article suggests, influenced Pijade during his sojourn in Vienna between 1900 and 1902. However, in the wake of the Serbian struggle for independence from the Ottoman Empire, Pijade, like other young Serbian Jews, felt the need to express his loyalty and identification with the Serbian national cause, rather than, like Buber, with the Jewish one. Moreover, he influenced his younger brother Moša Pijade, an artist, to work towards a modern art influenced by mediaeval Serbian artistic heritage. This experiment was to end by the mid-1920’s when the brothers turned towards different causes: David to the Sephardic Jewish heritage, while Moša embraced a universalist communist ideology. Notwithstanding, their early efforts serve as an example of Jewish involvement in the national Slavic movements.

This article explores the use of photographs in Moritz Levy’s book dedicated to the history of Se... more This article explores the use of photographs in Moritz Levy’s book dedicated to the history of Sephardic Jews in Bosnia, published in Sarajevo in 1911. While the photographs accompany the historical narrative and aim to prove the preservation and continuity of the unique Bosnian Sephardic identity throughout the centuries, they were, as the article argues, distinctly modern creation. Visually prominent and imbued with an aestheticized quality, they relied on Ottoman official albums of promotional photography, Austro-Hungarian orientalized images of occupied Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the new Jewish art.
As a result of this novelty, Levy’s book became a model for the way in which later Yugoslav Jewish publications presented Bosnian Sephardim. Due to the turbulent historical events in the region these images became politicized, assumed a memorial role, and have also recently inspired a renewal.
