Information is all around us and is the staple diet of human beings. Information is variously perceived as facts, intelligence, data, news and knowledge. Information has been a common ingredient to all areas of human endeavour, be it the day to day affairs of business, matters of life and death or the most trivial pursuits. In a modern industrial society there are negligibly few individuals, who do not, from time to time, occasionally/frequently have any requirement of information. It is an essential accompaniment of almost every social activity. Information is considered as important that contributes towards the development of a nation. It provides the core for the development of knowledge, the basis for innovations, the resources for informed citizenry and as a result become a key commodity for the progress of a society. Members of a society acquire the needed information from a variety of sources. However several of these sources are expensive, complex or difficult for individual...

ICT, such as the internet, the advanced wireless technologies and mobile communication networks are becoming increasingly indispensable in many aspects of work and everyday life. But to keep up with the fast advancing pace of new technology, library professionals have to constantly renew their technical skills as well as enduring pressures to be able to meet the higher expectations from management and users. This often leads to techno stress experienced by library professionals in many institutions. This study examines the effect of technology on library professionals of engineering colleges of Anna University, Coimbatore, by examing the dimensions of: 1) Demographical details 2) Perceptions of technology, which includes emotional reactions to technology and replacement of people by technology.

Many of the fisheries institutes in Kerala are in their infancy and they do not have self-radiant library and information system to assist their teaching as well as learning process. Only a few colleges have good information centre and resources. Self-sufficiency remains only imaginative, because of insufficient funds and information explosion. The sky rocketing cost of periodicals and books in every discipline and even the richest libraries cannot afford to subscribe to all of them, to fulfill the user demands and inflation impelled libraries towards resource sharing. For effective functioning of sharing of information sources, a realistic approach has to be worked out in collection development, networking, etc and taking into consideration the present information, communication and computing infrastructure as well as psychosocial aspects of fisheries manpower and users. The study aims to develop a library consortium for the Fisheries institutes in Kerala. At present, there is no s...

The most popular model of micro credit in India is that of self-help groups (SHGs). A qualitative study of SHG interventions in Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat undertaken by Nirantar, a Centre for Gender and Education, offers insights into the micro-credit phenomenon through voices of women who are part of SHGs. Mostly women are the beneficiaries of this micro credit system. A district-level official linked to a national level SHG programme sponsored by the ministry of rural development explained why the programme focused on women. “Women cannot go anywhere, they can be located easily; they cannot run away leaving their homes; they can be easily persuaded to repay as they feel shame more quickly and consider non-repayment as a betrayal of family honour”.

The growing gap between recorded knowledge and living knowledge has attracted the attention of Ta academicians, thinkers and researchers all over the world. This article presents library space – research ecology as a solution to this problem. The library and information science (LIS) played an important role to spread the knowledge around the world to create a knowledgeable and networked society and to cure the problems of the horizon of knowledge. Information explosion, information overloaded, limited capacity of the human brain, etc. are suggested as possible causes of this phenomenon. They are wondering about few consequences of the same such as data mining, skills gap, knowledge monopoly, the stagnancy of knowledge, knowledge filtering and unmanageable amount of information waste. As the " … university libraries are symbolically considered as the heart that pumps knowledge to every part of its constituent bodies, " [22] they could play unique roles to bridge recorded knowledge and the living knowledge and to protect and promote the quality knowledge by good research. Research ecology, Data mind, Skills gap, Knowledge monopoly, Stagnancy of knowledge, Knowledge filtering, information waste, Information explosion, Information overload.

“Library is the Heart of Any Institution.” Introduction of micro storages for library materials will spare a huge amount of physical space to the library. Space demanding new trends and requirements compels the librarian to rethink library environment. The highly dynamic learning environment is needed for the progress of quality research and at the same time, these physical environments very much depend on the users for their effectiveness. In this article, I try to propose some norms and practices for transforming a space into a research-friendly environment. Based on the understanding of user requirements and quality research environment (from a Space Survey in Various Library Learning Environments that I have conducted), I suggest different kinds of possible learning environments based on the Indian ethos. All these research environments are capable to accommodate the modern information access tools.

The creative designing of space for conserving and utilizing recorded knowledge – content – has passed through dramatic and drastic changes from the days in which human beings inscribed their
experiences in the cave walls to the present day as we store and retrieve content from cloud space or walk through virtual space seeking knowledge.
It was in January 2012 that we decided to conduct an international conference at DVK Central
Library. We started the theme discussion with experts in India and abroad. After several rounds of discussions, we decided that the theme should concentrate on actual crises that the present day librarians face. Although there were several burning issues, finally we chose on the theme related to Space and Content Management. Space and Content are interdependent and existential requirements of the library. The drastic changes in the Content demand systematic and creative
modification of Space. Managing the Space and Content in Library for a Networked Society is a challenge for librarians, institutions and library designers. The International Conference – IC.LISCOM-2014 was conceived as a great opportunity for designing, redesigning and modifying library keeping in mind international standards and models.
We announced the Conference in January 2013, as International Conference on Library Space and Content Management for a Networked Society (IC.LISCOM) during 18-20 October 2014 in association with Indian Library Association (ILA), Liverpool Hope University, Liverpool, UK,
Institute of Missiology, Germany, University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and Christ University, Bengaluru.
We identified around twenty core themes like Library Space: Philosophical and Historical Perspective; Space Appropriation; Conceptual Frameworks: Dr S. R. Ranganathan’s Five Laws of Library Science, Henry Faulkner-Brown’s Ten Commandments of Planning Libraries; Recent Trends in Library Space and Content Management; Space in Relation to Functions: Personnel, System Integration, Non-Library Facilities, Preservation and Digitization; Case Studies on Academic Library Building, Space Planning and Use of Space; Users’ Perspective of Library Space; Learning Space with Energy Variation, Visibility, Green Library, Adaptability and Research Culture of Digital
Age; Green and Other Technologies for Space Management; Norms and Standards for Library Space. On Content the topics like Evolution of Media and Formats through Ages; Traditional Formats: Manuscript, Print, Image, Local Script, Audio, Video and Multimedia; Modern Formats:
Digital, Online and Cloud Computing; Conceptual Frameworks for Content Management; Content Creation; Content Management Tools: Joomla, Drupal, etc.; Data and Content Curation; Users’ Perspective of Content Collection and Accessibility; Standards for Recording Content: Status and Recommendation; Content Quality: Information Explosion and Semantic-Web.
On 18 October 2014, the first day of the conference, we received delegates from 5 nations, 15 states in India, 54 universities, 10 library and information departments, 22 research and other institutions,
15 medical and engineering colleges, 33 autonomous and regular colleges and 3 schools. There were three keynote addresses and fifteen plenary papers by invited speakers. Although there were more than 120 submissions, only 96 papers were accepted for presentation, from among which 60 papers were selected for inclusion in the Conference Proceedings (electronic version with ISBN 978-81-89958-92-3). The collection of papers was divided into four broad areas:
1. Space Management;
2. Content Management;
3. Space and Content Management; and
4. Library Management.
For the print version, apart from the keynote addresses and plenary papers, we have selected only 42 papers according to the criteria defined by the Editorial Board and are included in this publication.
From the conceptual level onwards many people helped us to frame the Conference in an effective way. I would like to acknowledge with gratitude the inspiration and support from Rev. Dr Thomas Aykara CMI, Prof. Saju Chackalackal CMI, Prof. A. R. D. Prasad, Dr S. Ally Sornam, Dr B. Ramesha, Prof. Harald Suermann, Dr Raman Nair, Dr Jose Nandhikkara CMI and Prof. Gerald J. Pillai. The special way I thank the Editorial Board members Dr B. Ramesha and Dr S. Ally Sornam for their hard work and support to complete this Conference Volume and Dr Saju Chackalackal CMI, President, DVK, for adorning it with a relevant Foreword titled “New Age Libraries and the Art of Aspiring
to Inspire.” I also thank all my colleagues, especially Lissy Jose, Joshy Regie, and Regil Nadh C. M., who have generously helped in bringing out this Volume. I am happy to present this Conference Volume of the International Conference on Library Space and Content Management for a Networked Society for the greater benefit of all those who are
interested in enhancing the dynamic learning and transforming the environment in the library.
