Sound Beliefs: A Performaive Approach to the Thought of Irving Greenberg, Ovadia Yosef, and Yeshayahu Leibowitz, 2024
Academic scholarship has traditionally focused on written texts, leaving oral presentations large... more Academic scholarship has traditionally focused on written texts, leaving oral presentations largely inaccessible until the advent of modern technology. The introduction of voice and video recorders has enabled the preservation of speech, challenging the long-standing preference for traditional texts. Ferdinand de Saussure criticized this bias as early as 1916, yet the humanities often still overlook the value of spoken words.
This study examines three twentieth-century Orthodox leaders—Yeshayahu Leibowitz, Ovadia Yosef, and Irving Greenberg—selected for their commitment to public speaking and their distinct oratorical styles. I argue that focusing on performativity, form, and style can yield new scholarly insights.
Leibowitz used harsh irony in his speeches to provoke reflection on values and volition, blending a “Kantian” rational voice with “existential” irony. Rabbi Yosef, merging his identity as both Torah genius and folk preacher, used a parodic style to convey a pragmatic worldview, integrating his halakhic and sermonic speeches. Greenberg’s pluralistic approach, marked by satire and a subjective voice, aligns with postmodern sensibilities, using personal anecdotes to contextualize his arguments.
This these suggests that rigid distinctions between elite and popular culture, and modernism versus postmodernism, are inadequate when applied to spoken texts. The study’s theoretical and methodological innovations offer broader applications for future research.

I argue for the inclusion of oral texts stored in audio or audio-visual formats in the study of modern Jewish thought. Simply put, my project not only reads Greenberg, Yosef, and Leibowitz, it also watches and listens to them.

Among Jewish habitats, the shtetl and the kibbutz are polar opposites. The shtetl was pre-modern, religious, tradition-bound, and an offspring of feudal Europe; the kibbutz was modern, secular, even anti-clerical—the cutting edge of the Zionist project and the germ of the new Israeli nation-state. Yet, thanks to the rapidity of modernization in Eastern Europe, many Jews who lived and died on the kibbutz had been born and raised in the shtetl. They carried with them strong memories of the traditional Jewish Torah reading and the midrashic tradition that accompanied it.
A secular Zionist Revision of "Tsene U'r'ene": Reading David Cohen's Homilies
The current study describes the secular Zionist movement's addition to the derash literature through the writings of David Cohen (1894-1976). I wish to argue that his writings conflate his socialist secular milieu with his religious upbringing. This fusion informed his homilies on the weekly Torah portion, Which were published locally on his kibbutz.
The paper opens with a brief description of the derash literature and how it was affected by modernity, Followed by a presentation of relevant theoretical hermeneutical paradigms, including the translation of canonical texts for a modern audience.
The main section deals with the writings of David Cohen, who was known as "the father of HaNoar HaOved." It shows how Cohen devoted his life to working with underprivileged youth, while writing homilies in a mixed style that combined Histadrut ideology, Hassidic lore, and the "Tsene U'r'ene" format.
Gad Opaz's premise that the Shedemot group had to break through a screen of silence and repression reflects a misconception of Cohen's generation's engagement with a secular Jewish outlook. The current study sheds new light on this matter and suggests that Opaz's premise may have been too general.
