The primary motion of the piston is transferred to the crank. In addition to this primary motion, there exists a lateral motion (secondary motion) of the piston which is the main cause for the piston tilt and hence the piston slap. This piston slap is considered to be one of the chief sources of vibration which produces the engine noise. Therefore the lateral motion of the piston in x-direction is studied, in relation with the variation of combustion pressure on piston. The combustion temperature and the pressure are correlated for the dynamic analysis of the piston motion. The Kirloskar 4 stroke diesel engine is considered for the present study. The main goals are to estimate the life and early detection of failure of the spiral bevel gears pair, during operation. The solid models of gears are created by using the widely used solid modeling software CATIA V5. The goals are achieved by comparing the results of FEA of new gears pair with the results of gears pair having a crown pinion with one tooth broken. A review of work done so far on Finite element analysis of bevel gears is also presented.

Noise pollution norms have been laid down by OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) and Euro Norms. It is apparent that there exists a scope for the research in the design and development of noise attenuation methods and materials. In present review, the contributions of the researchers in design, testing and implementation of noise engineering in attaining the attenuation is focussed. Application of numerical, finite element analysis and experimentation analysis to study and to investigate acoustic materials in achieving noise attenuation are discussed. It also provides useful information in extending these studies and approaches with respect to macro and micro level material analysis in engineering design applications and thin film noise attenuation as well.

This paper discusses the experimental setup with the noise and vibration analysis approach to determine the signature of failures of spiral bevel gears. The proposed experimental setup seems promising for further research and development in the fatigue testing of spiral bevel gears. The Crown pinion and wheel assembly is used for the testing. The pinion is connected to the electric 3 phase AC motor of 75HP with a suitable coupling and the crown wheel is mounted on the half axle shaft, which in turn is connected to an electric dynamometer. The speed/torque of electric motor and the load applied by the dynamometer can be varied. Aluminium alloys are being extensively used in many applications due to their excellent weight to... more Aluminium alloys are being extensively used in many applications due to their excellent weight to strength properties. Many research works have been carried out to study and improve the mechanical properties of aluminium alloys. The composition of alloying elements plays an important role in deciding the properties of an alloy. The results of numerical methods have been accepted widely as they closely match with the experimental results. In the present study a numerical analysis tool i.e., finite element analysis (FEA) is used. The work presented in this paper is aimed at the study of effect of vibration characteristics of aluminium alloys of different compositions. The modeling and analysis is carried out using ANSYS software. A modal analysis is carried out to understand the vibration behavior i.e., natural frequency and mode shapes, of the material considered. The mode shapes and natural frequency play an important role in the design of dynamic machines. The harmonic analysis has been made to determine frequency characteristics. The analysis program reads the data from the input file processes the data and creates the output file containing the nodal displacements and nodal stress values of different stresses. From the analysis it is concluded that as the copper and silicon content in the alloys increases deformation decreases inversely. ANSYS results confirm the least deformation in case of 380 alloys. Young's Modulus and the ultimate tensile strength of the 380 alloys increase with the increase in copper and silicon content. Hence Al 380 alloys exhibit good strength with minimum vibration.
