Antik Yunan kültürünün gelişim sürecinde çeşitli anlamlarda kullanılan areté kelimesi genellikle mükemmellik/üstünlük ve erdemi ifade etmektedir. Bu çok boyutlu kavram, insanın her eyleminde mükemmelleşmesi ve liyakat sahibi olmasıyla eş değer bir anlam derinliğine sahiptir. Sosyal yaşamda büyük saygı gören ve kimi zaman ayrıcalıklar tanınan sporcular da bu mükemmelliğin ve erdemli olma haline en güzel örnekleri olarak görülmüştür. Özellikle sporcuların ulaştığı fiziksel mükemmellik zamanla erdemli yaşamın "ideal" vücut tipini karşılar hale gelmiştir.
Antik Yunan Heykeltraşlığı üzerine uzun soluklu ve kapsamlı araştırmalar
yapılmış olsa da çok az sayıda çalışma sporcu ikonografisine odaklanmıştır. Tanrı/tanrıça heykellerinden kişisel portrelere kadar birçok eserde öne çıkan sporcu ikonografisi, Klasik Dönem ile birlikte adeta Yunan Dünyası’nın vazgeçilmez bir unsuru haline gelmiştir. Bu konunun özellikle yeterince irdelenmemiş olması ve literatürde yer alan az sayıdaki yayınların konunun sosyal bağlamını öne çıkarmaması, güncel bir çalışmanın yapılmasını zorunlu kılmaktadır.

This article deals with on early group of Klazomenian transport amphorae that exhibit common characteristics in terms of clay composition, shape and decoration features. In relation to the small number of amphorae from Klazomenai the examples found at the sites overseas are not numerous. This unique type of amphorae found at sites besides Klazomenai are generally labeled as Chian production and are dated to the late 7th century B.C. The archaeological evidences at Klazomenai strongly support the identification of Klazomenai as the major amphora production centre of this particular type. All the available comparanda suggest a date between 650-620 B.C.

İzmir Arkeoloji Müzesi’nde korunan çok sayıdaki ticari amphora arasında az sayıda da olsa Arkaik Dönem’e tarihlenen örnekler yer almaktadır. Çalışma kapsamında, İ.Ö. geç 7. yüzyıl ile erken 5. yüzyıl arasına tarihlenen sekiz amphora ele alınmıştır. Buluntular içindeki en büyük grubu üç örnekle Lesbos üretimleri oluşturmaktadır. Lesbos amphoralarından iki tanesi “Gri” biri ise “Kırmızı” kil hamuru rengine sahiptir. Beyaz astarlı Khios amphoraları iki örnekle, Klazomenai ve Miletos ise tek bir amphora ile temsil edilmektedir. İzmir Arkeoloji Müzesi’ndeki son örnek, bölgesel bir üretim anlayışı içinde İonia üretimi olarak sınıflandırılmıştır.

Transport amphorae were produced on the Western Anatolian coast and the nearby islands starting from the middle of the 7th century BC onwards. Klazomenai, Chios, Miletos, Samos and Lesbos were the leading production centers. The new data obtained in the recent years show that alongside these centers, transport amphorae were also produced in centers like Erythrai, Ephesos, Knidos and Teos.

Herodotus names Aigai among the twelve cities that Aiolians established in the Aiolis region. Although the historians in the antiquity claimed that the Aiolian migrations to the area began in the beginning of the twelfth century BC, the current data obtained from the archaeological excavations indicate a date only as far back as the first half of the seventh century BC for the establishment of Aigai. According to Polybius' narration, Aigai suffered extensive damage during a battle between Prusias the second, the King of Bithynia and Attalos the second (one fifty-six – one fifty-four BC). In fulfillment of the post-war treaty Prusias the second was forced to pay one hundered talents to the cities that he damaged. Following this period, Aigai became an attractive economical and political center probably with the support that it received from the Kingdom of Pergamon and it was adorned with glamorous structures, such as the theater, bouleterion and the agora. It is evident that Aigai was an economically powerful city throughout the Hellenistic period. It is known that the city had a stronghold in the region in textile weaving and wool production.

Herodotos, Aigai’yi Aioller’in Aiolis Bölgesi’nde kurduğu 12 kent arasında saymaktadır. Antik yazarlar Aiollerin bölgeye gelişlerinin M.Ö. 1100 tarihlerinde başladığını ileri sürseler de, kazı sonuçları şimdilik kentin kuruluşunun M.Ö. 7. yüzyılın ilk yarısından daha erkene gitmediğini göstermektedir. Polybius’un aktarımına göre, Bithynia kralı Prusias II ile Attalos II arasında gerçekleşen bir savaşta Aigai ciddi bir şekilde tahrip edilmiştir (M.Ö. 156-154). Prusias II, savaş sonrasında yapılan barış antlaşması gereğince, tahrip ettiği kentlere 100 talent ödemek zorunda bırakılmıştır. Kent bu tarihten itibaren, muhtemelen Pergamon Krallığı’nın da desteğiyle, bölgede ekonomik ve kültürel bir çekim merkezi olmuş, Tiyatro, Kent Meclisi Binası (Bouleuterion) ve Agora gibi görkemli yapılarla donatılmıştır. Aigai’nin Hellenistik Dönem boyunca ekonomik açıdan güçlü bir kent olduğu anlaşılmaktadır. Kentin dokumacılıkta ve yün üretiminde bölgede en önemli merkez olduğu bilinmektedir.

Aigai is one of the important centers in Hellenistic Era. Archaeological excavations present a small Byzantine settlement, 12-13th centuries. This article describes a small Byzantine hoard of 22 coins, which was found in 2007 excavation season. They consist of scyphate (cup-shaped) bronze coins known as trachy, and these belong to Byzantine emperors I. Manuel, II. Isaakios, III. Alexios, Nikeia emperor I. Theodoros and Latin emperors (or Latin imitation).

Aigai, Hellenistik Dönem’in önemli merkezlerinden birisidir. Kentteki kazılar İ.S. 12-13. yüzyıllara ait küçük bir Bizans yerleşimine ait veriler sunmuştur. Bu makalede, kentte 2007 yılı kazı sezonunda ele geçen ve yirmi iki sikkeden oluşan küçük bir Bizans definesi ele alınmıştır. Bronz görünümlü, çukur Bizans da denen trachylerden oluşan define, Bizans imparatorları I. Manuel, II. İsaakios, III. Aleksios, Nikeia imparatoru I. Theodoros ve Latin Hükümdarları sikkeleri (ya da Latin taklitleri) olarak belirtilen sikke tiplerini içermektedir.

Hellenistic kingdom of Pergamon is one of the most important political and economic forces and it has remarkable close relationships with the ancient city of Aigai. Philetairos the first ruler of the Kingdom of Pergamon have made donations to the Aigai and Temple of Apollo Chresterios  and tried to show the impact on the city. However, especially in the first half of the third century, Aigai was influenced by the Kingdom of Seleucid instead of Pergamon. After the peace treaty of Apamea in 188, Aigai, Pergamon effect is particularly strong in terms of architecture and urban planning. Ceramic findings and works of sculpture from the excavations at Aigai, tangible evidence of the direct relationship that exists with the Pergamon. In particular, the two statues bearing the signature of the sculptor Menestratos of Pergamon, the most important evidence of the relationship between these.

Hellenistik Dönem’in en önemli siyasi ve ekonomik güçlerinden birisi olan Pergamon Krallığı ile Aigai antik kenti arasındaki yakın ilişkiler dikkat çekicidir. Pergamon Krallığının ilk hükümdarı olan Philetairos kente ve oradaki Apollon Khresterios Tapınağı’na yardımlarda bulunarak kent üzerinde gücünü ve etkisini göstermeye çalışmıştır. Fakat, Aigai özellikle İ.Ö. 3. yüzyılın ilk yarısında, Pergamon’dan çok Seleukos Krallığı’nın etkisinde kalmıştır. İ.Ö. 188 yılındaki Apamea Barış Antlaşması ardından, kentteki Pergamon etkisi, özellikle şehir plancılığı ve mimari açıdan güçlü bir şekilde görülmektedir. Aigai kazılarında ele geçen seramik buluntular ve heykeltıraşlık eserleri Aigai ve Pergamon arasındaki doğrudan ilişkinin maddi kanıtlarıdır. Özellikle, Pergamonlu heykeltraş Menestratos imzası taşıyan iki heykel söz konusu ilişkinin en önemli kanıtları arasındadır.
