Inclusion of information technology (IT) in the literature and teaching of organization developm... more Inclusion of information technology (IT) in the literature and teaching of organization development (OD) is a recent development, and often fails to articulate how OD can benefi t from the use of IT in practice (Yaeger & Sorensen, 2006). IT, however, is important to the study and practice of OD as it contributes to the overall performance of organizations and also can support a range of OD initiatives including management development, on - demand learning, and data analysis (Church, Gilbert, Oliver, Paquet, & Surface, 2002). Recent developments in consumer electronics, wireless communications, and Web 2.0 technologies — the creative application of web technologies to support group collaboration — have changed the organization by making it more virtualized and personalized. These collaborative technologies call into question some traditional assumptions about how OD is carried out within organizations.
OD depends on the creativity, problem - solving ability, and social competencies of members of the organization. Technologies that facilitate collaboration, manage change, accelerate learning, improve project management, and capture organizational knowledge are requisites for success in our global economy. Whereas businesses in the past could dictate how technology would be used to transact business, today ’ s customers and partners exercise their power over communication and collaboration methods.
This study examines students’ perception of computer-mediated communication tools based on their ... more This study examines students’ perception of computer-mediated communication tools based on their experiences, gender, and age as actors on the technology acceptance model and how their perceptions may assist the institution’s decisions to select and acquire those technologies. A quantitative research design using a questionnaire is used as the primary means of data collection. A combination of t-tests, ANOVAs, chi-squares, and Pearson’s product-moment correlation coefficients is used to analyze the data. The results of this study may be beneficial to administrators at the university level when making decisions about technologies that may affect the teaching and learning process.

The Community of Inquiry (COI) model provides a comprehensive view of how instructors can enhance... more The Community of Inquiry (COI) model provides a comprehensive view of how instructors can enhance the learning experience by understanding three dimensions of higher-order thinking: social, cognitive and teaching presences. The purpose of this study was to determine the extent to which the COI model distinctly exists in blended and online courses in a university setting. Goals of the study included determining the psychometric properties of the COI model, examining the relationships between COI and demographic variables, and providing recommendations instructors can use to improve teaching presence in virtual classrooms. First- and second-order factor analysis and ANOVA provided critical results regarding both the importance of teaching presence, and the connection between teaching presence and student satisfaction with the learning experience. The findings of this study indicate that student satisfaction can be enhanced by improving teaching presence. The results further suggest that students may exhibit significant gains in the learning experience when relevant teaching techniques and interactions are effectively applied by the instructor. Implications and applications are presented aimed at improving teaching effectiveness in blended and online course delivery.
The term "scholarship of engagement" is an emergent concept first used by Ernest Boyer in a 1996 ... more The term "scholarship of engagement" is an emergent concept first used by Ernest Boyer in a 1996 article by that title. The term redefines faculty scholarly work from application of academic expertise to community engaged scholarship that involves the faculty member in a reciprocal partnership with the community, is interdisciplinary, and integrates faculty roles of teaching, research, and service. While there is variation in current terminology (public scholarship, scholarship of engagement, community-engaged scholarship), engaged scholarship is defined by the collaboration between academics and individuals outside the academy - knowledge professionals and the lay public (local, regional/state, national, global) - for the mutually beneficial exchange of knowledge and resources in a context of partnership and reciprocity. The scholarship of engagement includes explicitly democratic dimensions of encouraging the participation of non-academics in ways that enhance and broaden engagement and deliberation about major social issues inside and outside the university. It seeks to facilitate a more active and engaged democracy by bringing affected publics into problem-solving work in ways that advance the public good with and not merely for the public.
