In recent times recognition of the pandemic effect of HIV/AIDS in agricultural production growing. Hopefully with concerted efforts and actions lives could be saved, suffering and the impoverishsmtilelnts reduced. Since the disease commonly strikes the most economically productive members HIV/AIDS a problem of critical importance for agricultural, economic and social development. The rate infection and the absence of a viable medication that could be affordable the poor call baywareness and adoption of the prefoverntive techniques. Ignorance, negative attitude and behavioral pattern could be seen as the basis for the spread of HIV/AIDS Nigeria. The focus of this paper is on advocacy for the inclusion of HIV/AIDS preventive techniques dissemination in agricultural extension package. The result revealed that there a significant relation ship between awaisreness and use of preventive techniques (Use of condom X2 =18.291, p=0.019; Abstain from sex X2 =17.537, p; =0.025Use new syringe/needle X2 = 0.007). Many agricultural extension agents (96 %) indicated that in addition to capacity building on the they should also be provided with the necessary materials for the dissemination of HIV/AIDS 21.017, p =0.02, preventive measure. information.

Low farm productivity due to environmental degradation had made rural dwellers in Nigeria to diversify into other business besides agricultural production so as to liberate them from poverty. However, there are various challenges to livelihood diversification among the rural dwellers. This study therefore, identifies constraints to livelihood diversification among rural households in southwestern Nigeria with a view of improving their livelihood activities. Following data collection through structured interview schedule and Focus Group Discussion on respondents’ socio-economic characteristics, livelihood activities, reasons for diversification, and constraints to diversification and data analysis by using frequency counts, percentage, means, Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation, and binomial regression at p = 0.05. Constraints to livelihood diversification were lack of infrastructural facilities (91.9%), inadequate livelihood assets (82.0%) and poor transportation system (66.9%). Respondents’ level of livelihood diversification was significantly increased by primary occupation (β=0.64), income from farming (β = 0.16), length of stay (β = 0.28) and income from non-farm activities (β = 0.13). Significant relationship existed between constraints (r=-0.130) and level of livelihood diversification. However, frequency of visits to urban centres (β = -0.25) significantly reduced respondents’ level of livelihood diversification. Level of constraints to livelihood diversification of rural households was high, hence, for achieving sustainable rural livelihood, Government and NGOs should give more support to the development of formal and informal capacity building at the local level to enhance human assets of rural households and make them adopt more non-farm activities. Some 815 million people world-wide suffer from chronic malnutrition and the most devastating and persistent problem of food security and environmental degradation are found in rural areas. These people are also information marginalized due to remote nature of most of such areas as in Nigeria. The objective of the research study was to identify opportunities in ICTs for sustainable food and nutrition security and propose policy framework towards achieving sustainable food and nutrition security through the use of ICTs. The information generated through literature showed that to be food secure, households need information and the understanding of what constitutes an appropriate diet, as well as the skills and motivation to make sound choices on family care and feeding practices. It was determined that nutrition knowledge is significantly associated with child nutrition, independent of mothers’ level of formal education or household income. Acceleration of agricultural development by increasing agricultural production, improved marketing and distribution that would lead to food and nutrition security can only be possible through knowledge and information. Bridging the digital divide through development and utilization of information communication technologies (ICTs) which include fixed lines, mobile phones and Internet services will go a long way in making significant impact in solving the problem of food security and malnutrition. Key words: Hunger, malnutrition, ICTs, access, capacity building, policy advocacy.

ABSTRACT The environmental injustice inherent in conventional pests management practices are perpetrated mainly through widespread exposure to chemicals used in agricultural production. The overall ill effect of this chemical based product to the environment and human health are some of the challenges which called for attention to look for efficient and effective alternatives that are capable of replacing chemical pesticides in agricultural production. Therefore, the research determined the perception of vegetable farmers on neem extract and rate of use for the control of insect. The respondents’ level of knowledge on neem extract was high (84.9%), benefits derived from utilization of neem extract such as prevention of pest and diseases ranked highest (95.7%) and the constraint associated with the utilization of neem extract was also high (50.5%). Chi square test of relationship revealed that there was significant relationship between socio economic characteristics such as: Age (χ2= 26.668, p= 0.009), level of education (χ2 = 66.351, p = 0.007), Income (χ2 =27.443, r= 0.007), Major occupation (χ2= 28.592, r= 0.005), and Farm size (χ2=71.001, p= 0.000) and the vegetable farmers perception of neem extract. The study further revealed that respondents sources of information on neem extract (p= 0.001), benefits derived from application of neem extract (p= 0.029), and constraints associated with the utilization of neem extract (p= 0.000), had significant relationship with respondents’ perception of neem extract. The respondents had favourable perception of neem extract for the control of insects. Therefore, to sustain farmers’ interest in organic farming, the farmers should be motivated through training on application of neem extract and there should also be documentation of effectiveness and correct quantity of neem extract to use.

Transfer and diffusion of efficient farming practices and technology that enhance agricultural productivity will be instrumental to achieving economic growth and nutrition security and poverty alleviation. This study focuses on establishment of short cut to snail production and possible transfer to the farmers and non-farmers within urban and rural households. Most households indicated possibility for adoption of the technology. This will enable them to produce snail both for income and improvement of household nutrition. Also, it will enhance the nutritional status of the pregnant and nursing mothers. Therefore government and non-governmental organization working on improvement of agricultural production should consider not only the financial status of potential adopters but also relate the importance of snail farming to health for fast adoption. Extension agents should also facilitate the transfer of this technology to both rural and urban households to ensure sustainable income and nutrition security. There has been decline in the production of goat meat, pork and beef during the 1996-98 period. The basic constraining factor is increasing cost of production associated with feeds and accessibility of maize, which is the major component of feed. However provision of alternative or complementary feed component such as sweetpotato, which is cheaper and readily obtainable than concentrate, will enhance availability of quality feed to accommodate expansion of livestock. Five goats on extensive management were used for the study. Sweetpotao peels were fed to the animals. Peels weighing 8.3kg that were produced over night were sole fed to these animals. The goats were watched as the feed on them without any difficulty. After about a year the first treatment was done a local variety of sweetpotato were peeled and the peels (less than 8.3 kg) were given to a group of five goats (different from the first group) on the same day that they were peeled. They ate the entire sample given to them and they survived. After about one month the peels that were dried for three days were also given to the goats and they ate them with no difficulty. About three goats and some poultry birds were given toasted granules (Spari) and they also ate. Some pieces of boiled sweetpotato were also dropped for about four groups of goats and they ate them. Therefore there is an increasing potential in sweetpotato for both human and livestock consumption. This calls for agricultural extension agents to create awareness on the potentials of sweetpotato as it is easy to produce and cheap to buy. Also, it enhance the transfer of technology, not only for increase production but also on processing and consumption in diverse forms for diverse groups. The need for fish farming in Nigeria is important due to the fact that many Households depend on it for their animal protein intake. The level of protein deficiency in the diet is increasing, due to the fact that many people cannot afford to pay for the increasing cost of meat. Uninterestingly most of the fish produced in Nigeria is from artisanal sector. Women play very active role in artisanal fish farming, processing, distributing and marketing. They also do this with the aim of providing nutrition and income for the maintenance of family welfare. These women face several constraints while participating in fisheries activities. Therefore agricultural extension agents should provide information and technology that will sensitize the women to increase their production capabilities for sustainable protein nutrition security in the country. Environment is a vital factor in the survival of man and essential development evolves from people’s increasing ability to utilize the environment and its resources in the production of needed goods and services. This study assessed farmers’ awareness and use of land management practices in Oyo State. All the respondents were aware of one form of land management practice based on the list of items provided. The result exposed the fact that, the respondents depended mostly on interpersonal contact with extension agents (50 %) and friends (34 %), than other sources of information such as electronic media (12.8 %) and printed media (2.2 %). Lack of capital to purchase the farm input and weather as well as problems of pests and diseases were observed to be major constraints to compliance to land management practices. Education (χ2 = 5.21; p = 0.05) however, was found to be significantly related to awareness of the respondents on land management practices. Pearson Product Moment Correlation (PPMC) showed a significant correlation between sources of information and awareness of land management practices (r = 0.642; P = 0.00). In addition, there was a significant correlation between awareness and use of land management practices (r = 0.422; P = 0.00). Therefore, more awareness should be created to these farmers of the importance of land management for the sustainability of agriculture and environment using different media. Women produce between 60 to 80 percent of the food in Nigeria. They are also responsible for managing household resources, yet their key role as producers and providers and their critical contribution to household food security has not been fully recognized. Therefore, this research identified the vital roles of women as the major pillars for achieving sustainable household food security. The result showed that women play significant roles in food availability and food security. Also, a positively significant relationship was shown between income generating activities and women's roles in ensuring food security. Due to the fact that women face a lot of social, cultural and economic constraints in performing their roles, there is therefore the need for capacity building to enhance income generating activities through provision of credit facilities, education and other resources for sustainable national and household food security.
