This collection –probably a hoard– of 93 Byzantine copper coins (1204-1341) together with a grosh of Ivan Alexander and an asper of the Golden Horde, was offered on the market by CNG in 1993. Dumbarton Oaks acquired 16 and the BnF 19 specimens therefrom. The detailed inventory, originally made by Peter Lampinen, is updated here. The “CNG hoard” is thus added to the rare mid-fourteenth-century deposits known to now (Prilep, Longuet, Serres, Pella). It differs from them by the mix of issues from the two Byzantine mints: Constantinople and Thessalonica.

The Rhodes/1998 coin hoard was found in the city of Rhodes and was composed by six gold Almohad coins and a Byzantine hyperpyron of the 12th c. Having it as a starting point, this article investigates the presence of Islamic coins in hoards found in the Byzantine territory during that period and their nature. There are only three known examples: the Corinth/1928 hoard, containing copper coins of the Seljuks of Syria, the Lindos/1902 hoard, also found in Rhodes and containing an Almohad dinar, and the Rhodes/1998 hoard. Their study shows that Islamic coins arrived in the Byzantine territories almost exclusively thanks to Westerners travelling from the Levant to Europe. In at least one case, that of the Rhodes/1998 hoard, it is certain that these Westerners were merchants, most probably Genoese.
