This paper examines the historiography of Al-nakba through analyzing the discrepancies between the Arab narrative of the events and its Zionist counterpart. In this respect the article also utilizes new scholarship analyzing the reasons behind the nakba in order to further problematize the defeat as the result of both political and military failure and disintegration. Additionally, the arguments presented here deconstruct some of the prevailing historical accounts addressing the 1948 war. They also serve as a general historical prelude situating the problem of the Palestinian refugees in a wider historical framework.
