That there is no universal agreement on what NT theology is or on how to approach it needs no demonstration. Presuppositions run the whole gamet from commitment to historical orthodoxy to a thouroughly secularistic viewpoint. Some authors treat the text philosophically and analyze it as a mythologically-colored statement of man's existential condition. Others take a descriptive approach, highlighting the religious teaching the NT authors stress. Some authors depart from pure scholarly pursuits to devotional applications. I do not intend to begin with a review of current methodologies. For a thourough treatment of the diversity among works on NT theology, the listener is directed to Gerhard Hasel's NT Theology: Basic Issues in the Currrent Debate. Rather, I intend to examine three works on NT theology asking three questions: 1. what does the author intend to do in the book; 2. how does the author go about fulfilling his aim; and 3. what is the actual result? Does it really represent NT theology? The case study method is used here. By its nature, the case study approach presents facts in order to raise questions. While this paper does not claim to settle the issue, it will present a working definition of NT theology and ask to what extent each author has met that definition.
