At present, educational TV cooking shows focus on the transfer of cooking knowledge and skills, whereas edutainment TV cooking shows focus on entertaining their viewers. Both types of shows are ongoing success stories. However, little is known regarding the shows' links with the cooking and eating habits of their audiences. Therefore, the current study investigates the relationship between watching an educational or edutainment TV cooking show and one's cooking and eating habits. Given public health concerns regarding the decline in cooking behaviors and the simultaneous increase in caloric intake from food outside the home, this study suggests a promising intervention. The results of a cross-sectional survey in Belgium (n = 845) demonstrate that the audiences of educational and edutainment TV cooking shows do not overlap. Although there is little connection between watching specific shows and eating behavior, the connection between watching shows and cooking behaviors varies across gender and age lines. Behaviors also differ depending on whether the viewer is watching an educational or edutainment cooking show. For example, men of all ages appear to cook more often if they watch an educational show. However, only older men (above 38 years) seem to cook more often if they watch an edutainment TV show. The results demonstrate that the relationship between watching TV cooking shows and cooking habits warrants further investigation.

Psychological research has been criticized for its extensive use of American university students ... more Psychological research has been criticized for its extensive use of American university students to make broad claims about human psychology and behavior. Critics recommend a broader base of participants because there is substantial variability in experimental results across populations, and North American and Western European psychology pool participants may be outliers in comparison with the rest of the species. This challenge is especially pertinent for claims of species-universal evolved psychological architecture. One such claim has been made regarding recognition of human life history strategies. For example, previous research demonstrates that North American women and men can identify male and female characters with fast (high mating effort, low parental investment) and slow (low mating effort, high parental investment) life history strategies, make accurate predictions about their behavioral tendencies, and respond to them in ways that would facilitate participants' own reproductive success. The current project validates the understanding of fundamental life history dimensions across a wide range of cultures, therefore supporting the idea that there is a universality in human's ability to use, and perceive others' use of, life history strategies. Results for each language sample replicated patterns from North

Sexual selection shaped our desires and led to sex differences in what men and women find attractive in a potential mate (Buss, 2003). In their search for mates, women desire multiple traits in men (such as intelligence, ambition, and athleti-cism), and, similarly, men desire various traits in women (such as physi-cal attractiveness and kindness). Therefore, popular aphorisms such as "Women want rich men" do not explain the entire picture (Graziano, Brothen, & Berscheid, 1997). In short, the qualities desired in potential mates are multi-faceted and complex—and also sexually differentiated. (see Buss, 2003). Importantly, sexual dimorphisms in mate preferences may not translate directly into different mating patterns between men and women, due to the constraints of mutual mate choice and a competitive mating market. Desires may often go unfulfilled, w...

Although women also spend copious amounts of money on luxuries, research focusing on women's motives for luxury consumption is rather scarce. Relying on costly signaling and intrasexual competition theory, the goal of the current study was to test whether female intrasexual competition in a mate attraction context triggers women's spending on luxuries. The results of the first experiment reveal that an intrasexual competition context enhances women's preferences for attractiveness enhancing, but not for non-attractiveness related luxuries such as a smartphone. This finding indicates that women may use luxury consumption as a self-promotion strategy during within-sex competitions, as these luxuries improve their advantages against same-sex rivals for mates. A follow-up study shows that c...

Viewers across the world seem to preferthe private lives of some unknown fictive characters over documentaries and educational programmes about world history, nature, life in different cultures, learning a new language, and so on. Despite the benefits of such nonfictional programmes, our minds are drawn to the first kind: we want to know why Maggy cheated on Greg with his best friend ...
