Morton, yapay zeka, yeni cemiyet
Natural Disaster/Artificial Intelligence:
The End of the World, New Communities and Art
Abstract: This article discusses the differences and the similarities between the disasters and
the catastrophes such as war, which we consider to be related to the end of the world, that
come about as consequences of man-made problems (like the US combating these as a
matter of the armageddon) in a historical process. To that aim, the article discusses the
works of Hakan Topal who has been writing on and photographing various subjects ranging
from Adapazarı earthquake to the catastrophes in the US and New Orleans for the past 20
years and the fundamental themes such as abandoning anthropocentric thinking and community
built by catastrophe that are tackled in this issue. In a nutshell, this is a dialogue
investigating the parallels between art and theory established by Topal with references to
Timothy Morton and the articles in this issue.
Keywords: art, disaster, catastrophe, animals, object-oriented ontology, Timothy Morton,
artificial intelligence, new community
Home: Feminist Geography, the Middle East and Unavailable Intersections
Abstract: This article tries to reflect and add to the literature on feminist geography by
carrying the discussion of home beyond the public-private dichotomy as well as “Islamic”
geographies, such as in harem-selamlık. In order to go beyond the obstacles around the familiarity of the home that makes it quite impossible to discuss it, I tried to show how home and
the public became one both in terms of totalities and resistances. In short, nourishing from
my previous research on various spaces such as the hammam, and home and harem as well as
the literature on feminist geography, I tried to reevaluate the problem of spheres by interpreting them as parts of a unity.
Keywords: Home, feminist geography, harem, total institution
