Yabuki Joe is wandering around as if he escaped from the death of Rikiishi Toru. During his wandering journey, he meets Wolf Kanagushi and Goromaki Gondo. Their meeting arouses his fighting sprits, and Joe comes back to Tange Boxing Club. However, he has a fatal weak point. Because his punch on the temple killed Rikiishi, he can't hit on the temple. To make him recover, Shiraki Yoko invites a king without a crown, Carlos Rivera, from Venezuela.

I was hesitant to watch this one, but it ended up being the easiest recommendation for all pre 1990 tv-anime that I watched.
I love the art style and certain aspects of the show feel way more modern and better than nearly every other show of this time period.
No wonder that this show was quite beloved in Japan.

See season 1 first. This is a conclusion.
There is some overlap between 1st and 2nd. This season starts after Rikishi's death, so lot of episodes are a repeat.
The style and story is similar to S1, but animation quality has improved.
It has a sad ending but its poetic and we finally understand why Joe is who is, why he thinks the way he does, his past where he grew up alone unloved, why he never responds to the two girls who have loved him from the start, etc. Joe is not a hero that we can like or understand easily.
It prompts us to ponder our own life. The story was so simple but human.

One of my favorites, a masterpiece by Dezaki Osamu that you can't miss for sure.
