The prayer book was made in a workshop of Stanisław Samostrzelnik, the most famous old-Polish book illuminator of the 16th century.
The prayer, containing beautiful illuminations, was created in the most famous amoung Polish illuminators' workshops by Stanisław Samostrzelnik.
The main objective of the study is to present a fifteenth-century treatise by Matteolo Mattioli (most often referred to in the literature as Matheolus Perusinus) entitled De memoria augenda in the context of the humanist culture at the turn of the sixteenth century in Poland, and the Kraków circles especially. The study introduces the author and discusses the treatise itself, something the Polish literature devoted to the subject has not done in much detail so far (to this end, we draw mainly on the works Regina Lupi, Sabine Heimann-Seelbach, Helga Hajdu and Mary Carruthers). It then discusses two editions which are strictly related to Polish culture (Leipzig 1495 and 1508 with an epigram and dedication
by Andrzej Boner, brother of Jan Boner, as well as Kraków 1531 with a dedication of Jan Wiewiórka). Based on the dedication and a woodcut with the Rola coat of arms present in the book, it was possible to determine the author of the dedication as Stanisław of Łowicz,
humanist, doctor of medicine and professor at Kraków University as well as establish a new date for the Kraków edition made by Florian Ungler publishing house. Mattioli’s treatise is also put in the context of two other mnemotechnical texts from the early sixteenth century – Opusculum de arte memorativa (Kraków, Kasper Hochfeder, 1504) by Jan Szklarek and
Artis memorativae naturalis et artificialis, facilis et verax traditio by Laurent Fries (Strassburg, Johann Grüninger, 1523).

The first introductory part of the work presents the nature and extent of the role the art of memory played in the minds of people, especially at the times prior to the invention of the printing machine. Mnemonics was present in almost all domains of life. The chronological range of its influence encompasses times from the first known traces of mnemonics (the so-called Aurignacian culture), to the first three decades of the sixteenth century. Since Opusculum stems from the tradition and application of Roman classical rhetoric, attention has been drawn mainly to the existence and evolution of treatises on mnemonics in European culture, from the legend of Simonides of Keos to the beginning of the sixteenth century.
Rules that govern the process of remembering also governed people’s minds arranging knowledge according to rules set up as early as classical times by ancient peoples (for instance, they eventually led to the emergence of Jan Amos Comenius’s encyclopaedia and the framework for new pedagogy). To some extent, mnemonics shaped poetry making it not only beautiful but also a consistent and practical form of conveying knowledge on God, history and the surrounding world. Recommendations and guidelines as to mnemonic images and places influenced the greatest artists of the Middle Ages, such as Dante, Petrarch or Giotto, and, in Poland, the most prominent Polish medieval poet – the Observant Władysław of Gielniów.
This dissertation is composed of two parts. The first is an extensive introduction divided into three chapters. Chapter 1 briefly introduces the history of mnemonics in European culture from before the invention of the movable type printing machine. Chapter 2 deals with the presence of the art of memory in medieval Poland, especially at Cracow Academy. The most prominent lecturers in the artis memorative at the University, both Poles and those coming from abroad, are characterized here. Chapter 3 presents the author of Opusculum - Jan Szklarek. The chapter presents known facts from the life of the Observant and his known literary output. The chapter also discusses the issue of the authorship of the book, so far unclear. Chapter 4 includes a discussion on the content of the treatise and attempts to place Opusculum in its right place among other similar treatises of the fifteenth century. Gutenberg’s invention and the dissemination of paper-based materials made Szklarek’s work abandoned and not continued.
The other part of the paper is the edition of the Latin text of Opusculum de arte memorativa as well as the translation of the treatise completed with detailed footnotes. Additionally, as an appendix, phoctocopy of the treatise is included (of the copy housed at the National Library, call number BN XVI Qu 270, the so-called the Zamoyskis copy).
