"An Outsider among His Own Kind Forms of Xenofania in the Afrikaans Novel"
Summary
An Outsider among His Own Kind is concerned with the issue of otherness and strangeness, but it consciously departs from the predominating discourse attributing absolute value to such differentiating features as the race or the nation. Therefore this study focuses on an outsider among his own kind, i.e., where the otherness is inconspicuous, has to be planned and created by the author and subsequently reconstructed and received by the reader. The subtitle Forms of Xenofania in the Afrikaans Novel indicates that the subject of the analysis is the South African literature written in Afrikaans. The notion of xenofania is derived from the book by Zbigniew Benedyktowicz Portrety ‘obcego’: od stereotypu do symbolu (Portraits of ‘a Stranger’: from the Stereotype to the Symbol) (2000). When discussing various forms of cultural manifestation of strangeness/stranger, the author introduces the term xenofania which comprises everything that expresses strangeness, being the other and becoming different (from ksenos - a stranger, a guest, a traveller; phainein - to show). Benedyktowicz endeavours to discover the structure of a xenofanic experience, expanding beyond the narrow sociological and psychological categories, enriching his analysis with an ethnographic and anthropological approach. Inspired by his concept, this book treats an outsider as a classic embodiment of xenofania understood in this way. Yet, its task is not only to define the phenomenon of ‘an outsider among his own kind’ but also to examine to what extent literary aspects of the phenomenon generate various manifestations of strangeness (xenofanias) and various procedures of its expression.To avoid misunderstanding, it should be emphasised that the book is not a Motievenstudium, as it does not aim to ascertain the presence of an outsider in the Afrikaans literature or to distinguish his or her features. It focuses on:1) a more precise definition of an outsider as he or she may be identified for the present times in aesthetic terms, i.e., as a character who does not cede his or her moral responsibility on the ethnicity, nationality, faith or ideology but accepts it unconditionally and during this process of struggle with the world undergoes the xenofanic experience and acquires the awareness of a cosmic dimension of moral responsibility; an outsider may thus be treated as ‘Chiffre’ of today's conditio humana.2) concrete ways of creating an outsider and the forms of his or her manifestation, i.e., the whole spectrum of literary procedures which may express xenofanic dimension in the text: from narrative techniques, through the effect of particular groups of motifs and thematic concepts as well as the way of absorbing them into literary structures, to the forming processes of the literary canon; several novels exemplify the manifestation of the phenomenon of an outsider or, more precisely, ‘an outsider among his own kind’ linked with essential literary issues which may be viewed in the context of xenofania.Thus, this study consists of two main parts. The first sketches the outsider's ‘philosophy’ defining terminology and meaning of various aspects of the Other/Stranger. This introductory essay engages in polemics with the one-sided sociological approach and other forms of scientific political correctness, prevalent in the research of strangeness or ethnic stereotypes, not only in South Africa. The fact that detailed linguistic considerations on the one hand and strictly philosophical on the other are left aside, enables concentrating on determining a new intellectual horizon of an outsider as ‘an outsider among his own kind’, where an outsider is understood not as an exaggerated or even artificial state but as an authentic process of alienation or, to be more precise, of experiencing xenofania. The process is dynamic and intensive and is never complete as an outsider is always a potential entity. Referring to Emmanuel Lévinas, the Other is not to be controlled and neutralised by juggling with notions but to be expressed.The second part of the study analyses the ways of manifesting an outsider in the xenofanic dimension. It is an empirical analysis of xenofanic ways of manifesting the phenomenon of ‘an outsider’ in concrete literary situations, both extra- and intra-textual. In other words, an endeavour has been made to examine the morphology of xenofania in selected Afrikaans novels and to show to what extent its presence in concrete literary situations (with the use of various elements structuring a work of art as linguistic and literary) not only enables the creation of the character as an outsider but also creates conditions for experiencing xenofania in the text.The part discussing extra-textual xenofania analyses 'Sy kom met die sekelmaan' ('She Comes with the Sickle Moon') (1973) by Hettie Smit. The object of interest is the historical and literary dimension of the writing strategies and critical procedures focusing on a concrete work, especially those which generate various forms of xenofania. It analyses Smit's position as a woman-writer, a novelist of the 1930s generation of poets and the author of only one book, who, despite this marginalising potential, has earned a firm position in the canon of Afrikaans literature. The interpretation is especially concerned with the links between a concrete literary genre, social and cultural roles determined by gender and the canon.The discussion of the intra-textual xenofania to a certain extent follows the premises formulated by Shlomith Rimmon-Kenan, who distinguishes three essential elements in her typology of the narrative fiction: story (the events), text (their verbal representation) and narration (the act of telling or writing). The analysis of literary situations, whose concrete structures express the experience of xenofania, is more or less oriented towards this threefold principle - more or less, because the interpretation of the selected literary material necessitated some modification of the quoted typology.The chapter devoted to the novel by Karel Schoeman 'Na die geliefde land' ('Promised Land') (1972) analyses what is told, thus xenofanias within the story or, in other words, various levels of showing the presented world (story). The background for the discussion is the phenomenon of the so-called farmer novel (plaasroman), a classic sub-genre in the Afrikaans novel. Schoeman's book refers to this tradition and as its modern travesty engages in thematic polemic.In the case of the book by Dolf van Niekerk 'De son struikel' ('The Sun Falters') (1960) the interpretation focuses on the substantial role played by the set of recurrent motifs (eyes/face/head) while the allowance is made for such factors as time, characteristics of the protagonists and focalisation. Close connection of the motifs with the presented world and the structural elements of the book has been discussed. Yet, the interpretation centres not only around the technical and literary aspects (text) but also around the philosophical aspects formulated by Emmanuel Lévinas, who perceived himself as a thinker revealing metaphysical and moral dimensions of human relations and radicalising moral redefinition of the subject as ‘responsibility-to-and-for-the-Other’. Many of his concepts may elucidate the ethical ‘outsider among his own kind’.The last chapter analyses the process of narration as exemplified by 'Sewe dae by die Silbersteins' ('Seven Days at the Silbersteins') (1962) by Etienne Leroux focusing on the issue as to what extent narration structures contain the xenofanic potential for presenting a literary character as alienated. This context influenced the interpretation of the exposition from the first pages of the novel and the significant shift in the narration and focalisation perspective.

Benigna van Groenekloof of Mamre (1873) first won renown when it stared to be called upon in the discussion concerning the oldest text published in Afrikaans. The book is still controversial: scholars disagree not only as to the language in which it was published (Dutch, Afrikaans) or its genre (short-story, novel, anthology), but also as to the name of its author. Although the work was published anonymously, both the archive research and preliminary survey of the library holdings clearly point to the fact that the Dutch book was written by a German missionary, Herman Benno Marx.
The present article not only presents his profile in more detail for the first time but also emphasises the importance of the Dutch language for the language policy of the Moravian Brothers and for their missionary and educational work. It also points to
the need for a new approach to the history of the South African writing.

On literary historiography and South African Studies in Europe

This article is an adapted and elaborated version of the memorial lecture (sponsored by the National Afrikaans Literature Museum and Research Centre in Bloemfontein) delivered in Potchefstroom on 4 March 2005. My encounter with the famous scholar P. J. Nienaber prompted deeper reflection on literary historiography and education methodology at tertiary institutions. The core question of the essay is to which extent the traditional way of thinking about Afrikaans literature, as applied in South Africa, should be rewritten when the Afrikaans literary historical process is explained to an external, foreign target audience. I argue from my experience as the author of a history of Afrikaans literature written for an European audience. The second related issue under investigation and supplied with examples is in connection with the new field of study "South African Studies" as it is planned and being realised in Poland. Here I go deeper into the question of what the possibilities of knowledge transfer are when the object of study is an exotic reality as well as ways of familiarizing it. The idea is that the new Polish curriculum should benefit the student in two ways: to transfer a certain amount of knowledge and, by this indirect route, give new insights into the student's own familiar reality. The face of war -- the face of the Other: Epiphany of the visage in Die son struikel by Dolf van Niekerk

Traumatic war experiences are crucial in shaping the identity of Diederik Versveld, the main character in Doff van Niekerk's Die son struikel (The sun stumbles). In this article I want to explore the war experience that the protagonist has to deal with, its literary adaptation, and the construction of the protagonist's identify. I indicate that the three stages of Diederik's development are closely connected to the concrete philosophic contents of the novel The thought of Emmanuel Levinas serves as my interpretative framework. Central to Oiederik Versveld's experience of war is the reduction of the subject to merely and impersonally existing, to il y a ("there is".). In my opion Levinian concepts are useful in outlining the route to a better understanding of the protagonist's experience of the war. In analysing the processing of the trauma of war Levinas' notion of the epiphany of the face of the Other can be helpful The encounter with the Other in the faces of other people plays a crucial role in Diederik's attempt to come to terms with his experiences of war and death. In Totalite et Infini (Levinas, 1961:188) the French philosopher wrote: "The epiphany of the face unlocks humanity".

De Internationale Vereniging voor Neerlandistiek (IVN) werd opgericht in 1970 en biedt docenten Nederlands uit meer dan veertig landen (én hun 20.000 studenten) een podium in de vorm van colloquia, databanken, een digitale nieuwsbrief en het tijdschrift Internationale neerlandistiek. Eén van de opmerkelijke initiatieven van het IVN is het driejaarlijkse Colloquium Neerlandicum dat eind augustus 2009 voor de zeventiende keer georganiseerd werd en waar meer dan driehonderd docenten Nederlands uit het buitenland aanwezig waren. Via de Nederlandse Taalunie ontvangen deze docentschappen ook financiële omkadering van de Nederlandse en Vlaamse overheid. Naast het recent opgericht Taaluniecentrum Nederlands als Vreemde Taal in Brussel is er ook een uitgebreid systeem van basis- en projectsubsidies ten gunste van de buitenlandse vakgroepen Nederlands.
Traditioneel was het Nederlands sterk geïntegreerd in Duitse en Zuid-Afrikaanse onderwijsinstellingen. De laatste jaren wordt de positie van het Nederlands in verschillende Europese landen echter bijzonder precair. Vakgroepen worden met sluiting bedreigd, noodlijdende afdelingen zien zich verplicht te rationaliseren, docenten moeten buiten hun vakgebied een fulltime zoeken. In Portugal werd onlangs een noodkreet geslaakt om de plaatselijke departementen vooralsnog open te kunnen houden. In andere landen wordt met veel inzet en inventiviteit via samenwerkingsverbanden, afstandsonderwijs, Engelstalige masteropleidingen Dutch Studies en virtuele kanalen aan studentenwerving gedaan. Toch ziet het er naar uit dat het Nederlands wereldwijd in de komende jaren zware klappen zal moeten verwerken. Beperkte geldstromen, structurele knelpunten, terugloop van studentenaantallen en gebrek aan visibiliteit door het overaanbod van de vaak meer populaire cultuur- en communicatiestudies spelen mee in deze verschraling.
Toch zijn er regio's waar het Nederlands het bijzonder goed doet. Diverse Midden- en Oost-Europese universiteiten beschikken over uitgebreide vakgroepen waar Nederlandse taalverwerving én wetenschappelijk onderzoek hand in hand gaan. Uit Polen alleen al waren meer dan twintig docenten Nederlands op het Utrechts colloquium aanwezig. Eén van hen was Jerzy Koch die bij die gelegenheid de Visser-Neerlandiaprijs 2009 mocht ontvangen. Jerzy Koch is verbonden aan de universiteiten van Poznan en Wroclaw. In Poznan worden er dit jaar 27 studenten Nederlands toegelaten, in Wroclaw is dat een groep van een vijftigtal studenten: indrukwekkende aantallen die resulteren in een dynamische werking op vele domeinen!

Jerzy Koch studeerde in 1982 af aan de universiteit van Wroclaw en behaalde in 1991 zijn doctoraat aan de KUL met een proefschrift over de Poolse receptie van Multatuli. De studie verscheen in 2000 onder de Poolse titel Multatuli w Polsce. Naast zijn onderwijsopdracht aan de Poolse universiteiten van Poznan en Wroclaw was hij ook research fellow in Zuid-Afrika: zijn belangstelling voor de Vlaamse en de Zuid-Afrikaanse literatuur resulteerde in verscheidene, vaak comparatieve wetenschappelijke publicaties. Onlangs richtte hij het tijdschrift Werkwinkel. Journal of Low Countries and South-African Studies op. Daarnaast is hij een opmerkelijk vertaler: uit de Nederlandse literatuur vertaalde hij meer dan twintig boeken, waarvoor hij in 1995 de Nijhoffprijs ontving.

The aim of this article is to analyse the novel "Na die geliefde land" (1972) by Karel Schoeman, by interpreting the function of "hulle" ("they") as a category of alienation / distancing. Schoeman presented a future vision of South Africa controlled by an unidentified group of "them" and showed Afrikaners as a marginalized group, forced to live on farms. A narrow political interpretation dominated in the reception of this book, which was treated as a simulation of the development of the political situation in South Africa. The key argument of this article is that the indeterminate representation of the situation after the revolution is not a weakness of this novel, but a conscious strategy of the author. The article argues that problems concerning political revolution "("Who", "Why, "When")" are not that relevant in a reading of the novel because "Na die geliefde" land deals mainly with an Afrikaner community's reactions to a changed situation.

Bywoners (1919) deur Jochem van Brugen toon heelparty tematiese kenmerke van die plaasroman, hoewel dit novelle-agtig kort is en ’n hele paar jaar vroeër verskyn het as D F Malherbe se Die Meulenaar (1926) en C M van den Heever se Op die plaas (1927) — twee werke wat in een asem genoem word as daar sprake is van die eerste Afrikaanse plaasromans. In die artikel word veral gekonsentreer op die ruimtebeelding in Bywoners: die manier waarop destydse boerewonings voorgestel is; die ruimtelike plasing van huise en opstalle; die verankering van hierdie uitbeelding asook die sosiaal-kritiese implikasies daarvan in die verhaalopset. Die uitbeelding van arbeid en etniese mobilisasie kry bykomend in hierdie verband aandag. As slotargument word aangevoer dat Van Bruggen se sosiaal-kritiese en gevolglik didaktiese oogmerke met Bywoners spesifiek gemik was op die verandering van die geestesgesteldheid van die verarmde Afrikaners van sy tyd.

As brief as a novella, and published years before D F Malherbe’s Die meulenaar (1926) and C M van den Heever’s Op die plaas (1927) — generally cited as the first Afrikaans pastoral novels — Bywoners (1919) by Jochem van Bruggen nevertheless shares many of the characteristics of the pastoral novel. This article focuses on Van Bruggen’s portrayal of the milieu: the representation of the farmhouses of the time and the spatial situation of houses and other farm buildings. It demonstrates that both this portrayal and its socio-critical implications are firmly anchored in the narrative. The depiction of labour and ethnic mobilisation is also examined in this regard. In conclusion, it is argued that Van Bruggen’s socio-critical and hence didactic objective in writing Bywoners was to effect a change in the mentality of the impoverished Afrikaners of his day.

In mijn bijdrage wil ik tonen dat het comparatisme in de benadering van de Nederlands-Antilliaanse en Afrikaanse literatuur tot wederzijdse bevruchting kan leiden. Mijn zuster de negerin, een van de klassieke teksten uit de Nederlandstalige literatuur, wil ik consequent bekijken door het prisma van de typische elementen van de plaasroman. De plaas (boerderij, hoeve, farm) was altijd de ruimte om de Zuid-Afrikaanse problemen in verband met de identiteit en lokaliteit te verwoorden. Omdat de kwestie van identiteit en lokaliteit eveneens de kern uitmaakt van Debrots novelle, biedt de moderne benadering van de Afrikaanse plaasroman een verruimend interpretatiekader voor het Nederlandse verhaal. Tevens wil ik proberen om de problematiek van de novelle in het kader van de emancipatie op het Caraïbische gebied te plaatsen.

Toen ik aan de bibliografie van de Poolse vertalingen uit de Nederlandse literatuur werkte dacht ik dat de oudste literaire vertaling die van Hendrik Conscience uit 1858 was. Maar toen ik op zoek was naar de Poolse reisbeschrijvingen van Afrika ontdekte ik een merkwaardige publicatie die vijftig jaar ouder was dan de genoemde Conscience-vertaling. Mijn verbazing werd des te groter toen ik zag dat mijn peregrinatio academica mij terug naar Silezië leidde – de plaats van de druk was, let wel, Wrocław. Op die manier heb ik alles in één gehad: Nederlandse letterkunde, koloniale literatuur, en zelfs een beetje Zuid-Afrika omdat Bontekoe om Cabo de Bonaesperenza zeilde. Alle goede dingen bestaan uit drieën.

In onze bijdrage willen wij twee problemen aansnijden die direct verband houden met ons eigen werk als literatuurwetenschappers en neerlandici werkzaam in Centraal-Europa en tot dusver weinig aandacht hebben genoten: Neerlandistiek in internationaal verband en Centraal- en Oost-Europa en de (post)moderne literatuurwetenschap.

Bij de reflectie op de inbedding van de neerlandistiek in een brede internationale context wordt de extramurale beoefening van het vak nauwelijks betrokken. De discussie over de internationale context waarin de neerlandistiek functioneert, gaat zodoende voorbij aan het gegeven dat er al sinds decennia een kwantitatief en kwalitatief groeiende groep neerlandici bestaat die extramuraal werkzaam is en zowel buitenlanders alsook Nederlanders/Vlamingen omvat. Centraal-Europa speelt hier een steeds grotere rol.

Het spreekt vanzelf dat het perspectief van deze extramurale neerlandici, die in verschillende landen, cultuur- en taalgebieden werkzaam zijn, bepaald wordt door andere – culturele, historische, talige etc. – achtergronden, modaliteiten en een ervaringswereld, die anders is dan die van intramurale neerlandici. Kenmerkend voor de meeste extramurale neerlandici is het feit dat de Nederlandse taal voor hen geen moedertaal is en dat vanuit hun optiek – hoe geliefd hun studieobject ook mag zijn – de Nederlandse literatuur een kleine literatuur blijft die bescheiden onderdeel van de grote wereldliteratuur uitmaakt. Zij stellen daarom andere vragen en formuleren andere probleemstellingen met betrekking tot hun studieterrein. Erkenning als onbetaalde ambassadeurs van de Nederlandse cultuur in den vreemde is voor hen niet belangrijk, des te belangrijker is de deelname aan het open academische gesprek, waar geen probleemstelling als irrelevant en geen benaderings- en schrijfwijze als niet ter zake afgewimpeld wordt omdat zij niet in het courante wetenschappelijk discours binnen de muren van de Lagelandse metropool zouden passen. Veeleer kan de reflectie op de neerlandistiek in een internationale context belangrijke impulsen krijgen door het extramurale perspectief sterker dan tot nog toe in de discussie over de internationale dimensie te betrekken. Dit is evident in het geval van de literatuurtheoretische bijdragen vanuit de Oost- en Centraal-Europese literatuurwetenschap, die neerlandici uit deze contreien in theoretische debatten kunnen inbrengen.
Centraal- en Oost-Europa en de (post)moderne literatuurwetenschap. Sinds de cultural turn is de Westerse literatuurtheorie trots op haar democratische en open karakter dat een frisse wind door onze lectuur en reflectie doet waaien. “Mixed genres” dwingen geen beknellende genologische classificaties meer op, onderzoekers worden niet gestoord door de pretentieuze usurpatie door allerlei theoretische scholen. De als het ware Multatuliaanse vrije studie kan zich ongedwongen ontplooien. Er wordt royaal gebruik gemaakt van deze vrijheid en er ontwikkelen zich allerlei vormen van interdisciplinariteit.
Dit mag een nieuwe benadering lijken. Bij nader inzien is dit ’nieuwe’ concept echter alles behalve nieuw. Voor de meeste Westerse literatuurwetenschappers staat de eerste literatuurtheoretische avant-garde die in Centraal- en Oost-Europa in de jaren twintig en dertig van de 20ste eeuw ontstond, gelijk aan het Russische formalisme en Praagse structuralisme, die in de Westerse receptie mythische dimensies aannamen. Beide worden nog steeds beschouwd als de incarnatie van het ‘theoretische’/‘te(rr)orethische’ universalisme.

Wij willen hier laten zien, gebruikmakend van Centraal- en Oost-Europese literatuurtheoretische bijdragen uit de eerste helft van de vorige eeuw, die geen canonieke status in de Westerse literatuurwetenschap hebben gekregen, dat de interdisciplinaire opening van de literatuurtheorie reeds in de jaren twintig van de vorige eeuw plaats heeft gevonden, onder meer in tekjsten van Jurij Tynianow, Kazimierz Wóycicki, Roman Ingarden en een aantal in het Westen niet of nauwelijks gerecipiëerde literatuurwetenschappers, die bij voorbeeld de vraag of je tekst of context moet onderzoeken ridiculiseerden als vraag, of het erom gaat, “tanden te poetsen of handen te wassen”.

The South African Nobel Prize winner, J. M. Coetzee has a particular connection to the Netherlands. For instance, he had reviewed Dutch literature for the New York Times (the reviews were later included in a book called Stranger Shores: essays 1986–1999) and he translated and compiled an anthology of Dutch poetry (Landscape with Rowers, 2004) for the English readership. Moreover, his books are frequently published in their Dutch translation prior to their official English releases. In 1976, Coetzee translated a novel by Marcelus Emants Een nagelaten bekentenis (1894), published in English as A Posthumous Confession. Parallel to this translation work, Coetzee also worked on his second novel In the Heart of the Country (1977). This paper is devoted to a detective-like tracing of reflections that Coetzee’s close reading of the Dutch novelist might have left in his own book. Why did Coetzee in the first place decide to translate Emants’ novel? What was its appeal that attracted him so much? What was Coetzee’s reading of Emants back in the 1970s?

Propositions formulated with reference to one literary tradition could have a stimulating effect on research conducted in another. This contribution is aimed at establishing whether it is possible to analyse Dutch Antillean literature with Afrikaans literary concepts. To illustrate this, Cola Debrot's (1902-1981) Mijn zuster de negerin (My sister, the Negress, 1935) will be placed within the framework of the Afrikaans plaasroman (farm novel). This historical subgenre of the South African novel came to full bloom in the 1930s and 1940s. Central to the plaasroman is the farm-experience. The fact that contemporary Afrikaans authors are still interested in this novelistic mode testifies to its viability, which derives from the ample scope it provides for giving expression to problems concerning identity and locality. Mijn zuster de negerin, a true classic of Dutch literature, is studied here through the prism of the most typical elements of the plaasroman, for example the close connection with the soil and with nature, the space of the rural districts, the “plaas” as an idyllic place, the motif of the prodigal son, the rejection and acceptance of an inheritance/a legacy, the motif of the ancestors and rebellion against the older generation or the patriarchal order. Special emphasis is placed on the motif of house/homestead and barnyard, as the experience of these spaces contains the quintessence of all the other important motifs. Since the issue of identity and locality is central also to Debrot's novella, the Afrikaans plaasroman provides an expansive framework within which this Dutch story can be interpreted.
