Divestment takes different forms and is usually undertaken for a variety of general and firm-specific reasons. The objective of this article is to provide an overview and assessment of the current consensus on the empirical evidence on underlying divestiture motives. What is the direction of the literature on the antecedents of divestment? Are there important lessons to be learned from dominant and underexplored themes? We embark on the answers to these questions by analysing the existing empirical literature and providing an informative and instructive synopsis. Our synopsis contributes to the literature by integrating antecedents of divestiture from the multiple strands and synthesizing potentially rich areas of further exploration in the literature. Performance remains the dominant factor in divestiture but there is strong evidence that divestment is the result of a multitude of interacting dynamics amo...

Apart from macroeconomic variables associated with trade, this study explicitly creates a trade war scenario and trade war participant dummies. Using the neural network multilayer perceptron, this study checks for the causal linkages between the predictors and target output for the panel of Asian economies and the USA. Design/methodology/approach A conceptual model of the after effects of trade war in a quadrant is developed. Variables related to trade and tariffs are included in the study for a panel of 19 Asian economies. The feedforward structure of neural network analysis is used to identify strong and weak predictors of trade war. Findings The hidden layers of the multilayer perceptron reveal the inconsistency in linkages for the predictors’ services exports, tariff measures, anti-dumping measures, trade war scenario dummy with gross domestic product. The findings suggest t...

The transition from a period where knowledge was undermined by organisational setups to a period where knowledge is conceived as an endowment that serves equally and most often better than other organisational endowments such as land, labour, capital and entrepreneur is not free of a plethora of activities. Knowledge Management is an area that has ameliorated aggressively since the day the idea came into inception. The chapter attempts to excavate into the knowledge managing processes as developed over the course of time for blending with the requisites of varied businesses. In line with the objective of the research note, the two prominent and paramount dimensions of knowledge are delved into profoundly. The tacit and explicit dimensions of knowledge are seen as essential jolts to an effective knowledge managing system. While explicit knowledge can be easily retrieved and shared among the organisation,...

Charity has been almost a moral issue rather than an economic one though it affects the society in terms of economics. Mainstream economics has ignored the application of charity model and how it can result in reducing economic disparities. Unfortunately, charity has been ignored by researchers in the context of it being an economic entity. In 2015, International Monetary Fund (IMF) and Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) pinpointed the persisting issue of global income inequality and gave thumbs down to the populist approach of “trickle-down economics.” This study aims to theoretically examine how the concept of charity addresses the issue of global income inequality and denies trickle-down economics. The evidence suggest that countries can minimize income inequality by mobilizing the concept of charity. The concept of charity can result in a huge amount of transfers fro...

The objective of this paper is to examine the effect of social financial grant increases on poverty alleviation in South Africa. The paper inclines on prior poverty theories of economic growth, which highlights the use of social financial grants to achieve poverty reduction and equitable economic growth. The paper applies a quantitative approach; data on social grants were from the publications of the South African department of statistics and the South African Social Security Agency. The ensuing cross-sectional data were analysed using the structural equation modelling approach. Findings from the analysis indicate that, amongst the seven types, only three namely, the grants for old age, grants for disability and grants for supporting a child enhances reduction in inequality. On the contrary, four of the seven social grant types enhance reduction in poverty level; these are...

The negative impact of global warming has been seen, especially in developing economies, on the agricultural yields leading towards food insecurity. The four pillars of food security (i.e., availability, accessibility, utilization, and stability) are having an impact on climate change. The present study will begin by highlighting the concept of global warming. It will further provide an overview of the Indian food security system followed by the impact of global warming on the food security level in India. The study will also highlight the global warming and food security scenario in the present situation of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic in India.

GST has far reaching consequences and implication and effects especially on the attainment of cost effectiveness. This is a concept which revolutionizes the face of fiscal federalism in the country and there could be a fundamental deviation from the existing powers relating to tax structure between centre and states. GST would repeal the powers to work out and impose excise duties, service tax, sales tax and purchase tax which are under the purview of centre or states. A sound, effective and easy GST regime should be implemented to all sectors of the economy. The very purpose of the GST is to bring to end existing tax administration which is based on adhocism and non-transparent tax management.

The million dollars question is how to face such persisting trends and situation. Hence, three fundamentals are required namely-saving time, reduce cost and improve quality. Therefore, the application of technology in business especially in services has emerged as the need of the day. South Asian Region is one of the growing regions of the world in general and Asia in particular. Hence, the growth and use of technology (e-commerce) is sine-quo-non. But the emerging trends are showing a different scenario wherein disparities in terms of usage of technology in commerce are persisting in South Asian economies. With this back drop, the present paper deals with emerging trends in e-commerce and challenges which South Asian economies have to deal for better growth and use of e-commerce in the region.
