على الرغم من أهمية البحث النوعي (الكيفي) في مجال العلوم الاجتماعية، إلا أن المراقب الدقيق لميدان ... more على الرغم من أهمية البحث النوعي (الكيفي) في مجال العلوم الاجتماعية، إلا أن المراقب الدقيق لميدان البحث العلمي سيلحظ وجود انحياز ونزعة نحو البحث الكمي في مؤسساتنا التعليمية أو في مجلاتنا العربية المحكمة. عادة ما يكون هذا التحيز مبرراً بحجة أن البحث النوعي أقل صرامة وعلمية. وقد أدَّت هذه النزعة إلى ندرة البحث النوعي مقارنة بالبحث الكمي ومن ثم حرمان المجتمع من استخدام الأساليب النوعية وتطبيقها، وممَّا يمكن أن توفره البيانات النوعية من نتائج أصيلة وغنية تسهم في تنمية نظريات وتوصيفات جديدة وضرورية لتطوير فهم أفضل للظواهر الاجتماعية. لذلك، قام هذا البحث بالتحقيق في أسباب هذه الظاهرة من خلال سياقها التاريخي والفلسفي، واستعراض الأدلة التي تظهر التحيزات ضد البحث النوعي، وعواقب مثل هذه النزعة المتحيِّزة على المجتمع. من خلال هذا البحث، جرت محاولة لتوضيح وتفسير الأسباب التي غالباً ما تستخدم ضد البحث النوعي. يهدف هذا البحث إلى تسليط الضوء على الانحياز البحثي وإبرازه على السطح والإجابة عن بعض المفاهيم الخاطئة التي عادة ما تستند إلى فكرة أن البحث النوعي أقل علمية، وكذلك التأكيد على استقلالية البحث النوعي وحيازته للأدوات المنهجية والعلمية التي تضمن صرامته واتساقه وثباته. من خلال تقديم وجهات النظر والتعليقات، من المأمول أن يساعد هذا البحث في إزالة المفاهيم والتفسيرات الخاطئة، ويسهم في التوجه بشكل أفضل نحو البحوث النوعية.
Despite the importance of qualitative research within the social sciences, a close observer of scientific research will notice a tendency towards quantitative research in our educational institutions and Arabic-refereed journals. This bias is usually justified based on the pretext that qualitative research is less rigorous and scientific than quantitative research. اكتسبت النظرية المجذرة في الآونة الأخيرة شعبية بين مناهج دراسات العلوم الإدارية نظرا لقدرتها على ... more اكتسبت النظرية المجذرة في الآونة الأخيرة شعبية بين مناهج دراسات العلوم الإدارية نظرا لقدرتها على توفير أوصاف وتحليل وموضوعات معقدة من واقع المنظمات. غير أن الباحثين، وخصوصا المبتدئين، قد يواجهون عقبات مختلفة في تطبيق منهجيات النظرية المجذرة. فبالرغم من أنه نوقش الكثير منها، وخاصة في أدبيات دراسات العلوم الإدارية باللغة الإنجليزية، فإن هذه المناقشات قد لا تزال تربك الباحث، مما قد يؤدي إلى تطبيق وإنتاج غير كامل للنظرية المجذرة في أبحاث العلوم الإدارية. علاوة على ذلك، يكتب ويوثق عدد قليل من الباحثين باللغة العربية عن تجاربهم العملية، فيما يخص خبراتهم في استخدام النظرية المجذرة وتطبيقها، مما ُيوجد فجوة في أدبيات اللغة العربية. وعليه، تحاول هذه الورقة، من خلال استخدام دراستي حالة واقعية في سياق أبحاث العلوم الإدارية، أن تعكس تجارب فعلية لتوجه الباحثين وتوضيح بعض العقبات والخطوات التي ينطوي عليها اختيار النظرية المجذرة ومساعدتهم في استخدام الشكل الأنسب للنظرية المجذرة وتطبيقها في مجال أبحاث العلوم الإدارية.
Grounded theory has recently gained recognition within the context of business studies, due to its capability to provide real and comprehensive descriptions of organisations issues. However, researchers, especially beginners, may face different obstacles in applying grounded theory methodologies. Although much has been discussed in English business studies literature, these discussions may still confuse the researcher, which may lead to producing imperfect use of the grounded theory. Furthermore, a few researchers have reflected and documented their experiences in using and applying grounded theory, which creates a gap in Arabic business studies literature. By using two factual case studies, within the context of business studies, this paper attempts to reflect actual experiences and provides guidance to researchers, through clarifying some of the obstacles and steps involving the grounded theory process. This aims to assist researchers in using and applying the most appropriate forms of grounded theory in the field of business studies.

Knowing how wisdom is understood and practiced from the perspective of the Arab-Islamic traditions can illuminate the current literature and help leaders implement wisdom in today’s organizations. Thus, this chapter looks at how wisdom is conceptualized and applied by exploring its various interpretations and meanings in pre-Islam and post-Islam Arabic cultural contexts. At the end, implications and directions for future research and a conclusion are presented. This research fills an important gap by exploring a relatively overlooked tradition in the wisdom literature.

Although much has been discussed regarding the differences between the Glaserian and Straussian approaches, these differences can confuse early researchers, leading to the flawed use of grounded theory in management and organizational research. Using three case studies (a PhD graduate, a PhD candidate, and a PhD supervisor) in a management and organizational research context, this article illustrates these key differences and provides guidance for researchers in choosing between them. By providing examples and commentary, this article aims to help researchers to choose and apply the most appropriate form of grounded theory within the field of management and organizational research.

In this paper, we have surveyed, analysed and synthesised business diplomacy and related literature with the aim of developing a deeper understanding of business diplomacy. The findings of this study include an integrative definition of business diplomacy, a conceptual framework of business diplomacy’s core categories and a descriptive theory of business diplomacy. These results should help improve managers’ and academics’ understanding of what business diplomacy is, how to organise it and what benefits may be realised. This paper should help solidify business diplomacy as a serious field of academic and practitioner research.

Despite this vital role, business diplomacy literature is still lacking empirical research that provides a clear understanding of what it looks like in practice, and what are its core competencies. Using grounded theory, this research-in-progress will interview four groups of diplomats and representatives from governments, non-governmental organisations and businesses to obtain their perceptions of business diplomacy and what they believe to be the core diplomatic skills needed for business diplomacy to succeed. The objectives are to discover transferable diplomatic knowledge and skills, and to generate a substantive theory of business diplomacy.

This paper reports on an exploratory investigation into the concept of managerial wisdom. Six sen... more This paper reports on an exploratory investigation into the concept of managerial wisdom. Six senior managers from diverse and large organisations in New Zealand were interviewed about their conception of managerial wisdom. The findings show that senior managers have a practical and positive conception of wisdom consisting of four factors: experience and knowledge, emotional intelligence, mentorship, and deliberation and consultation. The findings show that concepts of ‘spirituality’, ‘religiosity’, and, perhaps somewhat surprisingly, ‘ethics’, are all absent from the participants’ descriptions of wise managers. A tentative definition of managerial wisdom is proposed based on these findings as well as an explanation for the absence of ethics. As interest in wisdom and management continues to grow, this exploratory empirical research serves as a base for further research on the understanding and place of wisdom in management.
