The article takes current convergences and overlaps as a reason to analyze the relation between art and design in a new way: By comparing both forms of aesthetic fabrication, it becomes possible to identify and highlight a unique interplay of production, work, and reception. This interplay, in turn, also opens up a new view on what form aesthetic self-realization can take in order to actualize an emancipatory practice. The argument mainly follows two considerations: On the one hand, it is shown that design has undergone a development for quite some time now, which strengthens its potential to coin processes of human living and subjectification. This is bound up with the fact that design entertains unique and autonomous opportunities to connect production and reception that are not the same as the ones present in art. On the other hand, it is shown that equitable collaborations and cooperations of art and design in institutions and projects open up new ways to install aesthetic perspectives on individual and collective problems and to develop new practices of dealing with them. Based on these observations and connections, the article advocates for a practice of aesthetic theory formation which starts from and roots in the tension fields of production and reception as well as of art and design.
The article follows the hypothesis that the aesthetic dimension of the standpoint of reason provides the main element for an appropriate perspective on how the interplay between rationality and irrationality is able to contribute to practical self-determination as a person. The starting point is formed by the critical discussion of the position considering that it is possible to derive the normative implications of practical reasonableness and self-determination from an abstract momentum of reflective distance. Whilst taking a look on Christine Korsgaard’s version of this idea it becomes clear that it rests on a conception of the practical standpoint that suffers both from a lack of methodological self-reflection and from neglecting the special features and potentials of irrational actions and experiences. The following text shows how the search for an alternative conception, which takes both aspects into account, benefits from a comparison with psychoanalysis, since this discipline is able to methodologically refer back philosophy to the original potential it unfolds in its aesthetic perspectives on practical standpoints.

Fundamentally, the dimensions of meaning of the term aesthetics point to overlaps between a theory practice, an object and a means of sensually grounded effect that occurs in experiences. Adorno interprets these overlaps as appropriate to the object of investigation. In his view, aesthetic theory practice requires a mimetic reconstruction: philosophical aesthetics must itself become aesthetic. This is achieved, among other things, by the rhetorical strategies just described.
This talk explores the question of the extent to which such an entanglement of aesthetic theory and practice represents both an opportunity and a risk for philosophical perspectives. The starting point for this is the observation that through the progression from poetic to visual to acoustic or tactile phenomena, theory practice reaches non-linguistic borderlands of bodily experience that do not belong to its area of competence in the conventional sense. If it nevertheless wishes to follow Adorno’s dictum, philosophical aesthetics must engage with a dimension of it falling silent without equating this with the total abandonment of all epistemic claims. The talk follows the hypothesis that this falling silent can constitute a fruitful starting point for mediation if the inconclusiveness of philosophical theory practice is considered in a self-critical manner in the process. The argumentation follows the idea that a philosophical position can get involved with the effect of aesthetic phenomena if it understands them as media that enable philosophy as a shared thought practice in the first place. This means determining aesthetic phenomena in their sensual richness and linguistic limitations as a hinge with which the limitations of an individual philosophical position can be linked to the offer of thinking further with others. Here, the opacity of aesthetic phenomena appears as both falling silent and connectivity, both dimensions being entangled in a dialectic way. However, precisely because this approach remains underdetermined due to its operation at the limits of linguistic comprehension, it also comes with risks. These will be discussed in the talk with a focus on the concept of accuracy. In this context, a difficulty of aesthetic mediation as open-ended process of exploring meaning takes shape. This difficulty will be discussed on the basis of the proposal to determine philosophical considerations as embedded in a network of practice in which accuracy and appropriateness as well as epistemic, ethical, and aesthetic perspectives are dependent on each other.
The talk follows a four-part structure: The first section explores the diversity of aesthetic presence in philosophical theorizing. The second section discusses the peculiar relationship between aesthetic theory and practice. The third section explores the tension between opacity and connectivity. The fourth section utilizes the concept of accuracy to raise the question of the limits of aesthetic mediation.

-Adorno's ambivalent attitude to the dangers and potentials of modern media
-The impact of Adorno's theory in the media theoretical approaches of the last several decades
-The relevance of Adorno's critical theory in the contemporary critique of digital culture
The exhibition "Adorno and the Media", which is organized parallel with the conference, displays a series of artistic works dealing with the same topics. In addition to the question of the impact of Adorno's media criticism and analysis of society in today's context, the participating artists deal with the representation and reception of Theodor W. Adorno's theory in international cultural and media production since the 1950s to the present.
On the base of this approach, Popp will discuss the hypothesis that artistic and design practices revolving around opening up and establishing performative and architectural spaces of activism and participation are able to create an interpersonally constituted presence of conscious and unconscious dynamics. This presence enables a comprehensive aesthetic experience where being together with others dissolves traditional distinctions between aesthetic production and reception in favor of a shared creation released from an almost intolerable abundance of relational density.
Both dynamics of change bring familiar self-understandings into motion. This also affects cultural practices such as art and design. As forms of generating aesthetic meaning and public practices, they claim technological achievements, react to crises, thematize and realize power relations, and bring marginalized perspectives into public awareness.
The symposium will take this potential as a starting point to discuss to what extent art and design can, or perhaps even should, take sides and what this means for their relationship to each other. The contributions and discussions will be rooted in contemporary social and political topics and materials as well as in a dialogue between aesthetic theory and artistic and designerly practice.
The national and international contributors provide perspectives from the humanities, from design, art and photography.
The program will be uploaded soon.
