Eleni Myrivili
Eleni Myrivili is a cultural anthropologist and Lecturer at the University of the Aegean. She combines ethnographic method with cultural and performance theory to examine how national borders and/or the new media shape our perceptions and debates about the real, the public, the environment, and the pedagogic.
She received her PhD in cultural anthropology from Columbia University, N.Y. in 2004. She received her MA from New York University in Performance Studies. Her BA was a double major in sociology and theater at Wesleyan University, Connecticut.
Her dissertation, The Liquid Border: Subjectivity at the Limits of the Nation-State in Southeast Europe, is an examination of the institution of the national border that focuses on the practices of the border people, from the perspective of cultural and performance theory. This ethnography, set in the border region of Prespa, offers an analysis of the discursive (and non-discursive) ways in which the border, an elusive and ominous materialization of state power, is constantly re-created and how it affects the people who live around it.
Since 2002, she has been teaching courses in culture and new media, games and other multimedia projects, narrative and performance, representation and non-representation, at the department of Cultural Technology and Communications of the University of the Aegean. She has published journal articles and chapters in edited volumes, which examine the national borders, performance, virtuality and games.
Her work has actively positioned itself in the move to take anthropology ‘beyond text’ and become a more public and interactive discipline. Below are a few examples of some of the anthropological projects she has designed:
Multimedia applications in museum exhibitions [http://www.anemon.gr/history_lost.html],
Museum web-pages [http://www.nma.gr/kids.coins],
Sound and set design for film festivals [http://www.britishcouncil.org/greece-arts-and-culture-emotion-pictures.htm],
The 2007, 2009 she coordinated, designed and directed the audiovisual material for the Parliamentary Elections and European Election Campaign for the Green Party of Greece. [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LdqUc_upAwQ]
During 2010-11 she co-wrote, as well as narrated/presented, a thrirteen episode documentary series on Greek National Television (ET1), entitled «Talk to me Green/My Green Apples» (Μήλα μου Πράσινα). This documentary on sustainable ecological issues and practices first aired on March 27th, 2011.
Since 2013 she's been presenting and interviewing the film directors of the First International Documentary Festival: AegeanDocs, broadcasted through simultaneous on-line screenings (and discussions) in theaters of six different islands of the Northern Aegean. [http://www.aegeandocs.gr]
In 2014 she is was elected as Council-member for the City of Athens (urban-sustainability and climate change portfolio) and by 2016 was appointed by the Mayor as Chief Resilience Officer for Athens (as member city of the network 100 Resilient Cities, pioneered by the Rockefeller Foundation).

This is a study of power at the limits of the nation-state: an examination of the institution of the national border that focuses on the practices of the border people, from the perspective of cultural and performance theory. The site of this study is the trilateral border region of Prespa, where Albania, Greece and Macedonia/FYROM meet over the waters of two lakes. This ethnography offers an analysis of the discursive ways in which the border, a materialization of state power, affects the lives of the people who live around it, forming among them particular subjectivities. These border subjects are both formations of the territorial nation-state power, and sites of its articulation. With their negotiations and representations of identity, their haunting by past violence, their excesses and their secrecy, they carve out the border as a material sphere essential to the legitimacy of nation-state authority. The border provides the nation-state with a state of exception. The Prespa borders, as all national borders, are subtended by violence that is instrumental to the institution of the nation-state and the legitimation of its power.
The border is theorized in this study as the space of distance between the Nation and the Subject, the no-man’s land where both the nation and its subject, stripped bare, institute and reiterate each other anew, locked in confrontation: the border is primarily a space of threat. My investigations used participant-observation and oral history techniques to document a broad range of practices of daily life in Prespa. I accommodate modes of representation such as storytelling, historical narrative, and theoretical analysis to take up challenges that the category of “performance” poses upon writing.
Books and Book chapters
"Mimesis" within the context of Western Metaphysics reveals our insatiable desire for "origins, " "originals," "authenticity" and "presence," all of which, in an endless juxtaposition to fraudulent "copies" and "representations" are defined as "truth" and "reality." Mimesis promises a real that it can never delivering. Modern and postmodern discourses reiterate the story of our seduction by the "real" and the inability to recover it as such. The notion of "performance," conceptualized here as mimetic excess, might allow us to break out of this vicious mimetic circle between the "real" and "representation." It might be able to give us "representation" without "reproduction."
During the past few years, a new discourse regarding Greek-Turkish relations has emerged and gained legitimacy on this border island. This directly competes with the hegemonic nationalist state rhetoric and agenda. The theoretical discussion that this tension opens up relates to the formation of the normative. What if what is normative at the national borders is not articulated through the discourse of nationalism, but instead through aspects of popular culture that stress familiarity, proximity and exchange? Could that amount to anything significant or concrete?
Offering a local perspective on Greek-Turkish relations, this work focuses on detailed accounts of individual experiences and perspectives (material typically disregarded by conventional methodological tools such as data, surveys, documentation). It is a focused, attentive examination of the recent Greek-Turkish rapprochement at ground level: the people that have engaged in interactions and developed exchanges over the Northern Aegean Greek-Turkish border.

This article examines the creative space that opened up at this particular juncture of cultural theory and the new media. This interesting and rewarding experiment, brought about an unusual interlacing of culture and technology, and a new type of methodology of teaching "culture" and "technology." We here discuss the role of the game in the context of the museum exhibition and the theory and practice that went into conceiving, designing and producing this digital game.

near 700.000 residents, part of a 3.75 million people metropolis, is for several years now facing a serious socio-economic crisis. Through concerted e orts, the city has managed to survive, to adapt and to transform into a more creative and collaborative city. The struggle is by no means over. This last year, calling on the insights and expertise of hundreds of stakeholders, from opinion leaders and academics to women migrants and the homeless, the city drafted its Resilience Strategy. This is a set of practicable actions which rst of all strengthen and scales up what has made our city stronger: formal and informal networks and alliances. Athens Resilience Strategy o ers a set of new integrated ways to prepare and protect our most vulnerable from future shocks and stresses that the city will face.
Boosting the city’s resilience means creating new as well as revitalizing existing open and green public spaces. This is vital for our densely built and populated city, threatened by both intense heat (climate change) and earthquakes. The city needs to become more forward thinking and proactive, turning its challenges into resources (vacant buildings, newly arrived refugee and migrant populations, energy and waste). Around such resources it will build capacity and start to develop economies that, together with tourism and the creative sector, will generate
the city’s future. Finally the city will strengthen its government, through becoming more transparent and accountable, opening streams of communication, creating a digital agenda and innovation strategy.
