    This is extremely well written, combining both intuition and rigour. It has good accompanying matlab demos. It should be of interest to many people who use numerical methods (integration, optimization, eigen analysis, etc), not just chemical engineers.

    Its a good book. There is a little too much focus on proof and derivation, but you can still just skim those parts and study the algorithms intently, and you will be just fine.

    Very broad in scope; covers multiple linear equations, multiple nonlinear equations, optimization w/ gradient search and stochastic search, and monte-carlo methods.

    The section on stochastic differential equations is somewhat lacking though.

    Explanations are somewhat confusing -- you need a strong math background as the book skips many steps while going through derivations.

    Practice problems are somewhat helpful -- however, they lack in-depth solutions and are often significantly harder than the examples that are provided.

    I received a pre-release copy of this book (probably the last draft) before it was published when I took 10.34 (the MIT Department of Chemical Engineering numerical methods class) in Fall 2006. The main problem I had with the book (in that form) is that the discussion of linear algebra in the text is wrong (unless you specifically restrict it to the positive definite case; both of my advisers taught the class over my time in graduate school, and one of them pointed out the errors in the text -- repeatedly). The book was typeset in Word instead of LaTeX, which isn't an error so much as it does not inspire confidence (as most mathematical work is typeset in LaTeX).

    To be fair, writing a good numerical methods textbook is tough. Numerical methods is a required course in many graduate chemical engineering programs, and other programs elect to give their students course notes (the University of Wisconsin and the University of Delaware are two examples I know of). Beers made an admirable attempt, and specifically includes chemical engineering applications, but the factual errors in an important, foundational subject in numerical methods make it difficult for me to recommend this book.

    I like the exercises but the book doesn't do a good job on teaching numerical methods. The typesetting of the book is horrible and makes reading annoying.
