Life Style Changes Do Make a Difference

Just in case you were wondering if it's worth putting down the dessert and picking up the tennis shoes, here's some evidence that will hopefully motivate you to make healthier life style choices.

The data in J. A. Iestra's recent study, "Effect Size Estimates of Lifestyle and Dietary Changes on All Cause Mortality in Coronary Artery Disease Patients," shows notable reductions in coronary artery disease -- and mortality -- when patients make these changes:

Diet change: 40-45%
Smoking cessation: 35-50%
ACE inhibitors (for blood pressure): 26%
More physical activity: 20-30%
Beta blockers (for blood pressure): 23%
Statins (for cholesterol): 21%
Aspirin: 18%
Moderate alcohol: 14-20%

The reduction in mortality from coronary artery disease is the same if not better with lifestyle or dietary changes as it is with medications. Other things to consider (but not analyzed in this study) are that lifestyle changes, such as more physical activity, don't produce bad side effects -- well, maybe a little sweat, but all medications may have some side effects. And certainly the cost of exercise vs. medication is lower too. So whether you're a Googler or not, let's all be visionaries not just about our work, but about our own bodies and souls.

2 years ago I started getting into triathlon quite seriously, I had a huge cycling accident where I shattered my leg and a whoe lot of side effects presented themselves from that. I have only recently started getting back into the sport and the difference between a lifestyle at home on the couch and one of sport is unparralelled. I would always take the exercise option.

If you want to change your lifestyle and rack up some great wife points, try ballroom dance.

Life style changes do make a difference especially if the change in your life style is your diet. My wife and I recently made a change to try to eat a whole-foods/plant-based diet after she finished reading the book "The China Study" and I say that it has really helped. I feel better, and I fit into one of my old suits that I had grown out of.

I am not clear what you mean about "moderate drinking". I drink 2 glasses of wine (250ml total) every day because I read that this correlates with lower heart failure than complete abstinence. Can any one comment?

I also understand red wine is better than white.

Before of the side effects of prolonged medication. I was prescribed a pain-killer (Iboprufin) for 8 years. Then they told me it had given me a stomach ulcer. Now I will be taking Nexium until I die. I wonder what that might cause.

Hi Dennis

It is hard to make a blanket statement regarding alcohol intake because many factors need to be taken into consideration. In fact this would be a good topic to discuss in a post. In the meanwhile I can tell you that if there are no medical contraindications, the US Dietary guidelines are: no more than 2 drinks for men and one for women if you are drinking on a daily basis.

Definitely, as a doctor i firmly beleive in what u say....but things are not that easy
for ppl who r actually suffring from such ailments and who are obese or overweight,it requires more than will power and life style modification.
but still i'll agree that lifestyle modification cut the cost of medical bills and shortens the duration of hospital stay

I agree with you doctor. It is extremely difficult to make the necessary life style changes. It is hard work for every one involved. I present the data in the hope that it will help motivate people.

How does one factor in plain ole genetics? My family has a history of heart disease on both sides. My parents are healthy, but have had heart attacks in their mid-50's. My mother's dad died of a heart attack before he was 50. I agree with lifestyle changes, but when is that not enough?

it's so awesome to have a real doctor amoung us! especially one recommending healthy food and excercise instead of pushing some poison on us!
for those of you with depression problems, diet and physical health play a HUGE role in mental health-try not to let anyone dope you up when it's something you should really be fixing yourself.
be well

I am very pleased that there are some Dr's that believe in living a healthy lifestyle instead of offering another pill. I only wish that Dr's and the alternative health companies could work together. I have been using all natural supplements for the past 6 years and am a very healthy 73 taking no medications. I have recently began reducing my weight with, what I consider one of the best healthy lifestyle, weight management programs available. A group of 84 males and females shed 303# in 3 days.

Take Control,
Andy

Although dietary change can be effective in reducing the LDL level,6 most patients are unwilling or unable to modify their eating habits sufficiently enough to achieve LDL treatment goals. In addition, patients who have no symptoms of CHD often do not perceive the need for or do not want to begin long-term drug therapy, sometimes lasting decades, to prevent future cardiovascular problems. Some are concerned about possible drug side effects, and the cost of lipid-lowering medication can also be a factor that discourages treatment.
